New Year, New Starts --

[ It was a new year. A fresh start. Naoto liked being given a fresh start. There wasn’t much he could do at the moment, given he was just trying his best to navigate the city, but an upcoming firework display at the castle made him excited. Naoto always loved fireworks, so this was a great way to start the year.
So there he was, bundled up in a winter jacket and scarf and just enjoying the show-- that is, until someone bumped into him. ]

Ah! Sorry there. Didn’t mean to get in your way.

[ Quest ] After the Storm

[ Naoto was always the one to find a way to help as much as possible. Even if it took all day, the teenager was determined to help each and every shopkeeper who asked him to help. It was the least he could do—even if his strength was cut in half, that didn’t mean he couldn’t do his own share of lifting debris.
He was just finishing up putting rubble in a designated pile as he took a large sigh of relief. ]

Ah.. That should be the last of it. Thank goodness too.

[ Quest ] Shadlin Showdown

[ Naoto had every reason to believe the pleas of the Avalonians. It sounded like very basic ghosts, but there could be more to it, especially as it was the winter months. In his experience, there was nothing worse than a vengeful spirit in the middle of February.
So there he was, a small fire in hand for warmth, walking along with his travel partner, looking around with almost pinpoint precision. ]

We’re looking for a pair of eyes right…? What do you think these things are, really?

[ Quest ] Internet Trolls (Closed to Ken)

[ Naoto isn’t used to hacking all that much, but he knows enough to get by. But he’s hoping that with Ken on his side he might have a bit of help. Who knows. He’s not keeping his hopes up. DMs ahoy-- ]

alright this bastard’s gone on for a while and i don’t know what to make of it.
but I do know that we gotta find them before they flood the entire network… so. aside from trying to talk to him, any ideas?

[Ken didn’t know what he was thinking when he decided to take on this quest. He figured after this last attempt with the pigs and fighting a fire cat, he might as well try something different. Although, the problem was hacking into a system when he barely knows how.

Here’s to hoping Fuuka had taught him something about computers.]

Not really. If he isn’t responding then we just need to find out where his IP address is. If we do that, we can locate where he is.

yeah, that makes the most sense, but i don't think this system even logs IPs like that... or at least, makes those kinda things public

[ Ken is definitely doing it right. In a way. ]

there has to be some kinda back door to the network though. if we go through there it might be easier to find said IP...

That's what I would do but I don't think the internet trolls would make it that easy.

It's 'properties' and yeah that is way to easy. we need something that'll break any security measures the hacker has first of all.

i'd try an IP tracker but again, that'd be too easy. if i could get a conversation going with the guy i could maybe do something?

How about this? You can try to get the location while I get a conversation going. It shouldn't be too hard to keep an internet troll distracted!

All I have to do is make them angry enough to keep on commenting.

it really shouldnt be hard but the problem then lies in getting the guy's attention first

and yeah that's true. anger usually blinds people from realizing what's going on. but that also means i'll have to be quick.

[Kei had signed up for this for investigation purposes. And strange eyes... probably aren't a good thing. He hopes for the best, but dreads the worst. He's also keeping his uncovered eye wide open, looking for any signs of these things. But the rest of him seems remarkably relaxed. As if this is just a stroll to look for mushrooms.]

I'm not really sure. [He pauses, then continues.] Maybe it's just something misunderstood. We haven't heard of any attacks, right?

No, nothing. It's weird-- they haven't been seen past the woods, yet they're causing a lot more problems being in the shadows than anything else.

[ He hums, as if contemplating something. ]

Even so, something just doesn't feel right about all this. It's weird.

[ The person who bumps into Naoto happens to be no one other than Akira. ]

Here we meet again. [ At least he's not flying this time around. ] Sorry about that.

[ Akira looks up at the night sky, his gaze shifting from one side to the other, just like he wanted to see as much as possible at once. ]

These are really great. I wonder if someone here is doing new year fortunes.

It's not a problem--

[ He blinks once he links the voice to the face. ]

Oh, it's you... don't think I caught your name last time.

[ Naoto tilted his head at Akira's near excitement at the fireworks. There was something almost... innocent about it. ]

I would hope so. I'd rather not start the new year without knowing that, at least. Maybe I should go look for one.

[ Someone got too excited about the flying boon from the bonbons and forgot to introduce himself; that's all on him. ]

Why don't we look together after the fireworks show? Maybe we're lucky enough to find someone telling fortunes.

Ah. Nice meeting you. I'm Naoto.

[ No matter what, his upbringing came through. Polite as polite can be. ]

Yeah, sounds like a plan. Hopefully there should be a temple if we're lucky.

[ Akira notices that the people aren't shooting as many fireworks as a few minutes ago, so probably the show won't last too much longer. ]

Do you remember the one you got last year?

[ The teenager kept his eyes on the show for a while longer, until Akira asked him about his fortune. He crossed his arms as he thought, humming at the same time. ]

Ahhh, I think I got decent fortune? I don't exactly remember, but here's to hoping I get better luck!

[ He grins before continuing. ] And you? What did you get?

Small luck every time for the past three years. I wonder if I'm going to break my small luck streak.

[ Small luck has been good enough so far, though. ]

It's fun, but I wouldn't leave everything up to luck.

[ Especially in their current situation. ]

after the storm

[ Stella's not exactly the beefiest of girls, so she's not a whole lot of use when it comes to cleaning up after the storm... but uh, the whole thing is something she contributed to even a little, which means even if it's only 1% her fault it still feels very definitively like Her Fault. So she's out here, dogging the footsteps of the people who seem a little more equipped to get this done in the hopes that she can do... who knows. Something. ]

[ He did just finish clearing up the debris in front of this store... He wondered if there was anything left on the checklist to do. He looked at the floor that was still covered in dirt and grime. ]

Do you wanna help me clean up this dirt? I'm sure the shopkeeper would appreciate that.

Quest/After the Storm

[ Emerald wasn't much of a do-gooder, but the money and the chance to play finders-keepers with anything valuable along the way wasn't the worst idea ever. She comes up to Naoto then, holding plastic bags for the debris. ]

Did you see anything good in it, or is it just a bunch of garbage?

[ She starts unfolding the bag, another one tucked over her arm if he wants to help with that-- but she's figuring he said he was done, so she doubts he'll offer to help bag the piles, too. ]

[ Naoto found himself jumping back, clearly too distracted in order to fully notice Emerald’s approaching. Even so, he knew that the question needed answering, and he’s not about to leave one hanging… no matter how much the approach freaked him out. ]

Just a bunch of garbage. Anything worth saving was broken beyond repair.

[ He didn’t add that the valuables he did save had already been returned to their owners, but he figures that it probably didn’t matter in the long run. ]

Guess the storm was that bad. Too bad no one got weather-controlling magic. Or broom-enchanting magic.

[ Those sound like spells that would be really useful to learn... still, too bad there's nothing worthwhile to scavenge. She starts shoveling the piles he made into one of the bags. ]

God, imagine though? That'd make cleaning so much easier.

[ He hated chores like sweeping, but at least this was for the greater good. ]

Maybe if I use some water magic to wash these streets, the clean up would go faster.

The fact that all the kinetic people aren't out here helping is exactly why they haven't figured out enchanted brooms yet.

[ The best she can do is manipulate light into hiding the mess, so he's at least a little more useful. ]

Yeah just blast it like a fire hose.

You're right, actually... Here, let me try.

[ And there he goes, trying to use water magic to clean the streets-- but instead of a stream, Naoto accidentally goes summons a torrent of water. Something that he very clearly has no control over. To the point that he's pushed back a bit when it's all done.

It didn't help one bit. ]

... Whoops.

[ Emerald's almost instinctively got a light shield in front of her to block herself from getting washed away, some of the water spraying off her shield. She yells when it happens, but once the water is gone, she laughs. ]

You may need some more practice, kid.

[ She's probably not much older than him, though.. ]
