[open] what am I to be what is my calling!

šŸ§™ WHO: Izuku Midoriya & YOU!
āš”ļø WHAT: Catch-all log for the month of March! Quests, open prompts and closed threads inside.
šŸ•’ WHEN: All throughout March.
šŸ—ŗļø WHERE: Camelot and surrounding areas.
āš ļø WARNINGS: tba.

[a: quest: run snaggle foot run]

[Snagglefoot Miffen is the name of the thief that has snatched up some precious gems from a local jewelry shop in Camelot. And if there is one thing that Izuku can’t tolerate as a student studying to be a hero? It’s crime, of course! When he had seen the task, he had signed up right away. Being away from his homeworld and his school hasn’t taken anything away from Izuku’s determination to be a hero and to help out whenever he can.

But this thief is chalking it up to be quite the challenge. A slippery fellow that once Izuku gets a single lead is off before Izuku can reach the next one. He’s been tracking the man through the streets as fast as he can, but the thief seems to be one step ahead of him so far. The next lead means he’ll be heading to the Red Springs Inn next. That means Izuku has to get there before he does.]

Alright, I’m not letting him get ahead of me this time. Even if I’m here... I still have to be. Plus Ultra!

[There is a flicker of magic as Izuku places his hands on a nearby tree. A flash and a bang later and the tree transmutes and grows into a twisted-looking wooden ladder with footholds and all. Izuku is then climbing up the ladder onto the roof of the nearby building and is then running and leaping from roof to roof. Better for the bird’s eye view and to get to the Red Spring Inn faster! Occasionally, only stopping to transmute more branches and tall hanging trees into planks to use as a jumping point to the next roof or ledge!

Witness his alchemy trick or help him out!]

[b: quest: farmers-r-us]

[Farming is still helping and Izuku is just glad that he can lend a hand. Alchemy magic also seems to be a good thing to have in this regard. He’s working with the local farmers with helping the new crops sprout. He’s slow at the work at first but he’s getting better at it bit by bit. And when he’s not helping with the crops himself he is also a healthy strong boy so moving supplies and hauling tools or crops is right up his alley too. The hard work feels nice!

What he doesn’t notice right away while he’s working is the small next of pixies that have seemed to have nested in a corner of the field he’s working in. One moment he is kneeling down to plant and work on some seedlings when his foot catches a part of the nest buried in the brush.]

Eh-??! [Whoosh!!

In an instant, the nest of pixies erupts like a swarm of bees flying around him in a pink and glittery haze! His hair flies up and sticks there as he blinks rapidly at the swarm whooshing all around him! He flails!]

Ah-!! Ack- AHHHHiiii!!

[How does he get the swarm of bees pixies to stop?! They’re starting to chant some sort of magic or charm and the air is starting to spark!]

[c: 🄦 broadsword shopping]

[Being in a fantasy world like this and without his usual quirk Izuku has realized he needs a way to keep up with combat and battle without being able to use his usual superpowers. Alchemy isn’t always a combat type of magic (or at least he hasn’t quite honed a way to use it in a combative way just yet) so he thinks with a weapon that it would be a good way to supplement his skills.

And who doesn’t want a big as heck sword to go with this entire fantasy world vibe?? Like right out of a JRPG!?

Izuku is browsing a local blacksmith and weapons store. Looking at a row of the broadswords that might fit his style and his grip. He’s never bought a sword before so he is a little out of his league right now but looking at the weapons is just … so freaking cool.]

Uaa... These swords are amazing! I can’t believe I’m really here and I can get one…!

[d: 🄦 alchemy studying]

[Izuku is still very new to alchemy but he is getting the hang of transmuting organic matter. Wood, plants and the like came to him easily enough. But with his classmates learning their own magic he does want to try and see if he can study enough to help them as well. With Katsuki and Tsuyu both using light magic, he has figured that the faster he learns how to change and manipulate glass, metal and precious stones? The better.

And that is where Izuku is right now. He’s sitting on a bench outside as he tinkers with a handful of copper pieces and a container full of sand. He’s currently trying to transmute the copper pieces into different shapes and later trying to change the sand into proper glass lenses.

Holding the piece of copper in his hand Izuku suddenly winces as his magic flashes and burns his skin. He drops the copper piece with a clatter! This is going to take some practice...]

If I can get copper and sand to work right... I can start making magnifying lenses...

[Izuku is starting to mutter to himself!]

[e: 🧭 wildcard]

[got something else? feel free to toss it down here! or contact me over here on the cr meme for some plotting! more than happy to make some closed starters as well!]

[Gaius makes a mental note that Izuku also used that addition to his name like Tsuyu did. Maybe they're from the same country? Possible.]

There are multiple weapons you could use, but the one that works best is something that will fit your style and body type. I've been using a spear for several years because it's a good weapon to have on horseback.

You might be good with a broadsword, but there's different kinds. Would you say you're decently strong?

[Because there's no reason to want to carry a sword that could crush stone if you don't have the strength to swing it around.]

A quirk...?

Oh! Then I've met someone from your world. She mentioned that most people have special powers where you're from.

[So the world with the special powers also has the addition to people's names? Gaius proceeds to make an incorrect assumption.]

If you're good with strength, you could be right. Here's the interesting thing about swords in general. They actually don't weigh as much as you think. But because of how they're balanced and how you have to hold them, it can take a lot of strength to make them work.

I'm sure this place will let you try out a few. Swing them around outside and see how they feel. You don't want to take the very first one you pick up.

Well, she seemed very nice. Her name was Tsuyu and said she had frog powers but didn't have them here? Something like that.

[Gaius smiles at watching Izuku light up with handling a sword. He would have argued against a sword just due to his size, but he appears to have been mistaken about that.]

You might want to take a few other broadswords and ask the shop keeper if we can practice outside. Then I can explain how weapons work and answer your questions about swords and spears. I'll find out if I remembered everything I learned in class.

[Ah, there's another name addition. He's going to need to ask Izuku about this, but first, he'll try his best to teach.]

Well, then I'm glad some of your friends ended up here with you. If I meet anyone else who talks about quirks, then I'll keep them in mind.

So since you're eager to work with swords, go ahead and try them out with the practice dummy. The first thing you need to know is even if a sword is made by the same blacksmith or company, one will not feel like the other. That's mostly how each sword is balanced and where it's balanced. The ideal point differs with each person.

You just need to try a sword that has its weight balanced fairly evenly between the blade and the hilt. If you have all the weight in the sword, it'll feel awkward for you to swing. If all the weight's in the hilt, then you're not going to have enough strength to do damage when you swing and the blade will likely snap.

[Maybe all those months of lessons have paid off, because he's remembering quite a bit from class and just general knowledge he's picked up from the army stationed at the Nord Highlands and Erebonia border.]

And if you've got questions, just let me know.

Your footing is always important. It's also how you swing. It's not just your arms, but your whole body. Any weapon is an extension of yourself, so it'll just take time for you to grasp how to use the sword properly.

[Gaius examines his spear. It's been sharpened enough that it provides a nice contrast to the broadsword Izuku is using.]

Not to mention that each type of weapon does a different job. It's true they're all for stopping your enemy, but they go about it in different ways. You'll notice your sword isn't razor sharp, but if you do run thumb on it, you'll cut yourself. As long as you have enough force behind your blow, it doesn't need to be super sharp.

My spear is a little different because it's designed to thrust and take advantage of all the force behind it, so it has to be sharper. But that means in turn, I might have trouble trying to fight something heavily armored, whereas you might not have as much trouble.

There's also the difference in distance with our weapons, but you can obviously tell that.

If you think this will make a good weapon for you, then try working with it over time. As for me? I've known how to use a spear just from my dad and the other members of my tribe. It's very useful on horseback when you're trying to fight off monsters. So I've used this for several years at this point.

A lot of your skill will come with time and training, so don't get discouraged. But I do have a question for you. I've noticed that you and a few other people add endings to people's names. Is that a part of your quirk world? Am I being rude by not adding one to the end of your name?
wherethewindtakesme: (hmm)

[personal profile] wherethewindtakesme 2021-03-23 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay. So it's a...quirk of language.

[An actual joke from Gaius? Maybe.]

So, san is just being polite. Is...sen-say just another way of being polite? Am I being rude if I don't use them for you?

[He wasn't expecting that. Not to be called a teacher. But to be honest? It feels kind of good. He hadn't thought about being a teacher, but maybe? Maybe?

He beams down at Izuku.
]

We call all our teachers Instructors. But I like sensei. I am teaching you something so it works.

You don't have to use it, but if it actually makes you feel more comfortable, you can. But you also asked me how using a spear is different from using a sword. So that's probably worth a demonstration, right?
wherethewindtakesme: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] wherethewindtakesme 2021-03-26 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
How about this? If I'm teaching you, you can use sensei and then if I'm not teaching you, I can just be Gaius?

[Just to help Izuku feel more at ease? Especially since he seems to enjoy learning from teachers?]

Well, with a spear, people in large scale battles often used them for distance to attack people and horses. The kind I have could be used for that, but it's mostly for trying to pierce. It's an application of force and the area that concentrates that force.

[He slides his spear until he's gripping it right behind the bladed crossguard.]

The amount of area that I have to attack with is a lot smaller than your broadsword. I don't know how much smaller, but even looking at it, you can tell. With a sword, you can swipe away and cause gashes. With a spear, it's all thrusting into vulnerable areas and causing the maximum damage possible, because of the force of how you're pushing behind it and the several feet of pole. It's a good weapon for hunting and especially good for fighting on horseback.

But the downside is a spear can break easier than a sword and if I miss someone, it takes me longer to recover and get back into position because this is even heavier than a sword and the balance takes a lot of getting used to.

I'd have to agree. You'd probably do best with a sword. You just have to learn how to swing properly and use your strength to good use. There aren't really any shortcuts to learning how be good at it. Just practice.

I can help with sparring, but you'll probably need to find someone else with using a sword. If I run into anyone like that, I'll let you know.

What I can really teach you about is horseback riding. Our tribe relies on horses to get around the highlands where I'm from. So I'd be more than happy to help you learn to love horses as much as I do.

[Besides, he has a feeling that Izuku could grow to be quite the fearsome fighter. Helping him learn more skills would help him grow and help Gaius grow.]

[He tilts his head curiously at the term "video game" but gets immediately distracted by the thought of horseback riding.]

It really is. Learning to ride and care for horses seems essential. I would be happy to teach that to you as well.

But let's concentrate on getting you the best broadsword. Then we can practice and have lunch if you want.
