[open] what am I to be what is my calling!
š§ WHO: Izuku Midoriya & YOU!
āļø WHAT: Catch-all log for the month of March! Quests, open prompts and closed threads inside.
š WHEN: All throughout March.
šŗļø WHERE: Camelot and surrounding areas.
ā ļø WARNINGS: tba.
[a:
quest: run snaggle foot run]
[Snagglefoot Miffen is the name of the thief that has snatched up some precious gems from a local jewelry shop in Camelot. And if there is one thing that Izuku canāt tolerate as a student studying to be a hero? Itās crime, of course! When he had seen the task, he had signed up right away. Being away from his homeworld and his school hasnāt taken anything away from Izukuās determination to be a hero and to help out whenever he can.
But this thief is chalking it up to be quite the challenge. A slippery fellow that once Izuku gets a single lead is off before Izuku can reach the next one. Heās been tracking the man through the streets as fast as he can, but the thief seems to be one step ahead of him so far. The next lead means heāll be heading to the Red Springs Inn next. That means Izuku has to get there before he does.]
Alright, Iām not letting him get ahead of me this time. Even if Iām here... I still have to be. Plus Ultra!
[There is a flicker of magic as Izuku places his hands on a nearby tree. A flash and a bang later and the tree transmutes and grows into a twisted-looking wooden ladder with footholds and all. Izuku is then climbing up the ladder onto the roof of the nearby building and is then running and leaping from roof to roof. Better for the birdās eye view and to get to the Red Spring Inn faster! Occasionally, only stopping to transmute more branches and tall hanging trees into planks to use as a jumping point to the next roof or ledge!
Witness his alchemy trick or help him out!]
[b:
quest: farmers-r-us]
[Farming is still helping and Izuku is just glad that he can lend a hand. Alchemy magic also seems to be a good thing to have in this regard. Heās working with the local farmers with helping the new crops sprout. Heās slow at the work at first but heās getting better at it bit by bit. And when heās not helping with the crops himself he is also a healthy strong boy so moving supplies and hauling tools or crops is right up his alley too. The hard work feels nice!
What he doesnāt notice right away while heās working is the small next of pixies that have seemed to have nested in a corner of the field heās working in. One moment he is kneeling down to plant and work on some seedlings when his foot catches a part of the nest buried in the brush.]
Eh-??! [Whoosh!!
In an instant, the nest of pixies erupts like a swarm of bees flying around him in a pink and glittery haze! His hair flies up and sticks there as he blinks rapidly at the swarm whooshing all around him! He flails!]
Ah-!! Ack- AHHHHiiii!!
[How does he get the swarm ofbees pixies to stop?! Theyāre starting to chant some sort of magic or charm and the air is starting to spark!]
[c: š„¦ broadsword shopping]
[Being in a fantasy world like this and without his usual quirk Izuku has realized he needs a way to keep up with combat and battle without being able to use his usual superpowers. Alchemy isnāt always a combat type of magic (or at least he hasnāt quite honed a way to use it in a combative way just yet) so he thinks with a weapon that it would be a good way to supplement his skills.
And who doesnāt want a big as heck sword to go with this entire fantasy world vibe?? Like right out of a JRPG!?
Izuku is browsing a local blacksmith and weapons store. Looking at a row of the broadswords that might fit his style and his grip. Heās never bought a sword before so he is a little out of his league right now but looking at the weapons is just ⦠so freaking cool.]
Uaa... These swords are amazing! I canāt believe Iām really here and I can get oneā¦!
[d: š„¦ alchemy studying]
[Izuku is still very new to alchemy but he is getting the hang of transmuting organic matter. Wood, plants and the like came to him easily enough. But with his classmates learning their own magic he does want to try and see if he can study enough to help them as well. With Katsuki and Tsuyu both using light magic, he has figured that the faster he learns how to change and manipulate glass, metal and precious stones? The better.
And that is where Izuku is right now. Heās sitting on a bench outside as he tinkers with a handful of copper pieces and a container full of sand. Heās currently trying to transmute the copper pieces into different shapes and later trying to change the sand into proper glass lenses.
Holding the piece of copper in his hand Izuku suddenly winces as his magic flashes and burns his skin. He drops the copper piece with a clatter! This is going to take some practice...]
If I can get copper and sand to work right... I can start making magnifying lenses...
[Izuku is starting to mutter to himself!]
[e: š§ wildcard]
[got something else? feel free to toss it down here! or contact me over here on the cr meme for some plotting! more than happy to make some closed starters as well!]

[He looks a bit embarrassed but Gaius was one of the main reasons why he thought he should have a weapon of his own here. After all, they did fight off a bunch of orcs together and Izuku only had a wooden shiv while Gaius used this giant spear... amazing.]
Yeah-! It's my first time looking for a weapon like this... I don't usually need something like a sword or spear. But this...? I think I'd like a broadsword?
[Help??]
no subject
There are multiple weapons you could use, but the one that works best is something that will fit your style and body type. I've been using a spear for several years because it's a good weapon to have on horseback.
You might be good with a broadsword, but there's different kinds. Would you say you're decently strong?
[Because there's no reason to want to carry a sword that could crush stone if you don't have the strength to swing it around.]
no subject
... I think I'm strong, I mean- I'm training to be a hero back home. And I've kept up with my classmates and especially Kacchan when it comes to strength training and endurance. I also specialize in a power augmentation quirk...
[He looks... determined!!]
I'd really like to try one of the broadswords...!
no subject
Oh! Then I've met someone from your world. She mentioned that most people have special powers where you're from.
[So the world with the special powers also has the addition to people's names? Gaius proceeds to make an incorrect assumption.]
If you're good with strength, you could be right. Here's the interesting thing about swords in general. They actually don't weigh as much as you think. But because of how they're balanced and how you have to hold them, it can take a lot of strength to make them work.
I'm sure this place will let you try out a few. Swing them around outside and see how they feel. You don't want to take the very first one you pick up.
no subject
[He might be able to clarify about the addition to people's names if it comes up too. Japanese honorifics are just a thing!]
I've seen a few people use swords before but I've never used one for myself. Is it different from using a spear like you do?
[Izuku goes ahead and starts to reach for one of the broadswords on the wall display. It looks heavy and probably a bit big for his height but here he goes anyway! He grips the handle and lifts it up.]
Ah! You're right! It's much lighter than it first looks! ... This is amazing!
[Or Izuku is stronger than he looks??]
no subject
[Gaius smiles at watching Izuku light up with handling a sword. He would have argued against a sword just due to his size, but he appears to have been mistaken about that.]
You might want to take a few other broadswords and ask the shop keeper if we can practice outside. Then I can explain how weapons work and answer your questions about swords and spears. I'll find out if I remembered everything I learned in class.
no subject
Yeah...! Tsu-chan is in my class. We're part of the same hero course back home. And just like everyone else, the quirks we used to have are gone here... So she can't use her frog abilities anymore just like I can't use my power augmentation quirk...
[But that's not going to stop him from wanting to wield a giant ass sword. Anyway,]
Alright- I'll go see what the shopkeeper says!
[It only takes a few moments of conversation before Izuku is practically sparkling when he's given several different broadswords and normal length swords to try out. They're directed to a few wooden practice dummies in the grassy back area of the shop.]
no subject
Well, then I'm glad some of your friends ended up here with you. If I meet anyone else who talks about quirks, then I'll keep them in mind.
So since you're eager to work with swords, go ahead and try them out with the practice dummy. The first thing you need to know is even if a sword is made by the same blacksmith or company, one will not feel like the other. That's mostly how each sword is balanced and where it's balanced. The ideal point differs with each person.
You just need to try a sword that has its weight balanced fairly evenly between the blade and the hilt. If you have all the weight in the sword, it'll feel awkward for you to swing. If all the weight's in the hilt, then you're not going to have enough strength to do damage when you swing and the blade will likely snap.
[Maybe all those months of lessons have paid off, because he's remembering quite a bit from class and just general knowledge he's picked up from the army stationed at the Nord Highlands and Erebonia border.]
And if you've got questions, just let me know.
no subject
[Because he really wants to write all this stuff down. He wants to make sure he gets everything right and that he learns properly about balance and imbalance. It seems the weight of the sword is very important. With the first one, Izuku takes the larger-looking broadsword and lifts it up with two hands. It's hefty and he tries a loose-looking stance.]
Weight distribution... If I want to use one like this I should make sure I can still keep my footing when I swing hard... Right? I think...
[He is going to try to give this one a swing! He aims for the dummy but it looks harder than it first seems. Izuku swings but it's a heavy lop and he doesn't hit it with much gusto.]
... Ah-! ...
no subject
[Gaius examines his spear. It's been sharpened enough that it provides a nice contrast to the broadsword Izuku is using.]
Not to mention that each type of weapon does a different job. It's true they're all for stopping your enemy, but they go about it in different ways. You'll notice your sword isn't razor sharp, but if you do run thumb on it, you'll cut yourself. As long as you have enough force behind your blow, it doesn't need to be super sharp.
My spear is a little different because it's designed to thrust and take advantage of all the force behind it, so it has to be sharper. But that means in turn, I might have trouble trying to fight something heavily armored, whereas you might not have as much trouble.
There's also the difference in distance with our weapons, but you can obviously tell that.
no subject
[Oh-! It seems Izuku knows a little bit about these things too! But it really is mostly from things he's read or anime and hero drama shows that he's watched. Putting these things into real use and in real combat is something else entirely.
He pulls back the sword and pulls into a loose stance again. This time holding the weapon in order to balance his feet better. He gets a good feel of the ground and the weight of the weapon in his hands.]
I think with practice this one will be good for me. I think I can put the power behind it that it deserves... Ah- Gaius-sensei! What about---
[Oh no. Did he just call him a sensei!? He suddenly blushes and drops the tip of the sword to the ground.]
I mean- Gaius-san! I was going to- ask... ask you...! How long did it take for you to learn??
no subject
A lot of your skill will come with time and training, so don't get discouraged. But I do have a question for you. I've noticed that you and a few other people add endings to people's names. Is that a part of your quirk world? Am I being rude by not adding one to the end of your name?
no subject
[... Izuki's face is going to get redder. He really was hoping that Gaius wouldn't notice his little slip-up. It's like calling someone your dad when you barely know them...]
It's ... It's Japanese honorifics. In my language, you add certain ones to names for respect and to be polite...
no subject
[An actual joke from Gaius? Maybe.]
So, san is just being polite. Is...sen-say just another way of being polite? Am I being rude if I don't use them for you?
no subject
[That deflates Izuku's awkwardness and he lets out a laugh.]
I guess- it is! It's not rude if you don't use them. -San is usually meant for someone who might be just a little older or an adult. Like... ahh... [The English!] Mister or Miss. And sensei is... it's ... the respectful honorific for a teacher...
no subject
He beams down at Izuku.]
We call all our teachers Instructors. But I like sensei. I am teaching you something so it works.
You don't have to use it, but if it actually makes you feel more comfortable, you can. But you also asked me how using a spear is different from using a sword. So that's probably worth a demonstration, right?
no subject
[He flusters with embarrassment...!!]
I guess the right way to call you sensei would be... ahh... Worzel-sensei?
[He shakes his hands in front of him! And then quickly bows his head.]
But Gaius is fine! I'm sorry! I'd still like to see you use your spear!
no subject
[Just to help Izuku feel more at ease? Especially since he seems to enjoy learning from teachers?]
Well, with a spear, people in large scale battles often used them for distance to attack people and horses. The kind I have could be used for that, but it's mostly for trying to pierce. It's an application of force and the area that concentrates that force.
[He slides his spear until he's gripping it right behind the bladed crossguard.]
The amount of area that I have to attack with is a lot smaller than your broadsword. I don't know how much smaller, but even looking at it, you can tell. With a sword, you can swipe away and cause gashes. With a spear, it's all thrusting into vulnerable areas and causing the maximum damage possible, because of the force of how you're pushing behind it and the several feet of pole. It's a good weapon for hunting and especially good for fighting on horseback.
But the downside is a spear can break easier than a sword and if I miss someone, it takes me longer to recover and get back into position because this is even heavier than a sword and the balance takes a lot of getting used to.
no subject
That- If that's okay. Sensei...!
[And he does remember when he and Gaius had faced down a group of blood-thirsty orcs. Gaius had used his spear in a very skillful way. Maximizing that damage and controlling his reach and speed.]
I- I've never ridden a horse myself before. But I wonder if I should try using a spear sometime too. I wouldn't mind trying a few different weapons out. But using a sword... I think I'll start with that first.
[Gaius makes it sound really interesting, he wishes he could write all of this down!]
no subject
I can help with sparring, but you'll probably need to find someone else with using a sword. If I run into anyone like that, I'll let you know.
What I can really teach you about is horseback riding. Our tribe relies on horses to get around the highlands where I'm from. So I'd be more than happy to help you learn to love horses as much as I do.
[Besides, he has a feeling that Izuku could grow to be quite the fearsome fighter. Helping him learn more skills would help him grow and help Gaius grow.]
no subject
... It really feels like I'm living in a video game right now.
[Izuku lets out a small laugh then smiles.]
Thank you, G-Gaius-sensei. [That still makes him blush.] I wouldn't mind learning about horseback riding as well, it seems like that's the best way to get around in this city?
no subject
It really is. Learning to ride and care for horses seems essential. I would be happy to teach that to you as well.
But let's concentrate on getting you the best broadsword. Then we can practice and have lunch if you want.
no subject
[He smiles gratefully. He really is blessed to find someone as willing and patient at Gaius for this.]
Thanks again, Gaius-sensei!
[It does have a nice ring to it. And off they go with the rest of their afternoon.]
