1) A Little Conversation

Mukuro had been trying to get a handle on suddenly having magic. Despite the seemingly supernatural levels of abilities the Ultimates at her school had, it was nothing compared to real magic. And, if she was to be honest with herself, she had literally no idea how to start learning. It wasn't like learning how to use a weapon at all!

But she wasn't about to give up!

Most mornings, she could be found around and about Brocéliande forest trying to...awkwardly strike up conversation with the local wildlife whilst her huge Hellhound found a shady spot nearby to nap.

"So, like...do you like carrots or whatever?"

To say the least, from the look the rabbit gave her before it raced off, it did not approve of the question.

2) The Libryrinth 🗡️

The rumours about the Library and whatever lay within certainly intrigued her. It sounded like a paranoid person had been jumping to conclusions from the original post, but then she noticed one of the weird symbols when she'd pulled out a book on animal care.

"...Maybe there is some truth in those rumours."

Well, it was late afternoon by now. Stealth and infiltration weren't out of her scope - even if doing so wearing Junko's obnoxious fashion was a task in itself - so maybe she should look into this one, after all.

3) A Tall Order 🛡️

"Ergh, seriously, do these things have to be so patronising?"

Initially, Mukuro was trying to work out a way to manage one of those sedan chairs all by herself... however, this was definitely not going according to plan. The elves were, to say the least, taking no time in pointing out that she was a disappointment and that this wasn't going anywhere fast.

"Oh shut up, I'm doing you guys a favour already!"

[Fenrir hung back a little, to make sure the elves weren't going to go after them, before heading off after the two.

That was- not the reaction she'd been expecting after being pulled away from the mission. She was expecting him to agree that she was smelly and disappointing and everything else.]

But- I did kinda agree to help them and, like, I totally messed things up for them. They're within their right to yell at me for being some stupid disappointment right?

Hell no, they aren't. They wanted someone to carry them around, you tried and found out that it wasn't working out. Sure, that sucks, but the right thing would have been for them to say "Thanks for trying". Just what kind of people have you been hanging out with?

[Up until now he was under the impression that she was a reasonably confident girl, being used to standing in the spotlight and all, but right now it doesn't seem that way at all.]

[Despite all appearances, the battlefield was the only place she had any self confidence. Things like this? Not at all.]

...You don't think so?

[Judging from her expression, she seemed completely taken aback by that comment. After all, it was reasonable to be berated with insults when she'd inevitably messed things up, right?]

I... guess I've just heard all that before, you know?

[Hijikata would be able to somewhat relate if he knew. Granted, his self esteem isn't remotely as low as Mukuro's, but while he's incredibly confident in his swordsmanship and leadership abilities his confidence is quite lacking on other regards, and even when it comes to his strengths it depends on factors. That goddamn cave excursion the other month showed him with painful clarity how helpless and incompetent he'd feel without his commander, for one.]

Who told you those things?

[Is she being bullied at school..? Such a popular-looking girl? Or are her parents abusive to her? As they head back towards the city he checks his phone for the time.]

It's almost lunchtime. Do you want to grab a bite somewhere?

[He'll leave it up to her if she wants to talk about this or about some lighter topics, if she wants to stick with him at all. He knows how hard it is to open up to others about things like that.]

Oh, just- someone from home.

[Awkwardly fiddling with her hair. Everything Junko said about her was true, right? So it didn't seem like such a big deal- almost as if her ego had been systematically broken down over the years.]

...you know what? Food'd be really good, right now.

What are you in the mood for? It'll be my treat.

[He's not picky when it comes to food as long as he can eat it with mayonnaise, and he has a bottle on him as usual, just in case they don't have any at whichever restaurant or snack stand they end up visiting.]

And while I don't know the circumstances I don't approve of whoever put you down back home. Even if you genuinely did screw something up, that isn't the way to improve matters.

[Sure, he's hard on his men too, but that's because he knows they can do better and just slack off for the hell of it. He wouldn't trash someone who's trying their best but either isn't suited for the task or hasn't figured out the right approach yet.]

[I mean she wanted to say field rations but no, let's not.]

Could just get some street food or something? ... And, um, thanks.

Maybe... I kinda think I deserve it most of the time, though.

[Wait, no no no, Junko wouldn't act like this! She mentally scolded herself, before shaking her head and pulling off her best smile.]

Sorry, sorry! Didn't mean to get so serious like that- I guess those stupid elves just got under my skin, you know?

Come on! Let's go eat!

[That quick 180° mood swing gives him pause, and he considers calling her out on it, but ultimately decides against that. She heard what he said, and it's for her to decide if she considers the matter further later on. If she wants to put it aside for now and try to enjoy herself that's fine by him. Still, he'll make sure she knows that she doesn't have to.]

We can talk about it more if you want to. I don't mind.

[He puts a hand on her shoulder to give it a squeeze. That's about how much physical reassurance he can manage.]

Let's grab a bite first though, yeah. How are you feeling about fish'n'chips?

[Normally he'd already have found a restaurant that'll make him his "Hijikata special" (spoiler: it's... rice with mayonnaise in a bowl), but somehow he found that this common local dish is actually pretty tasty and filling, so it's quickly becoming his new go-to food. It helps that it can be found virtually everywhere throughout the city.]

The squeeze on her shoulder came as a bit of a surprise, but she gave a smile then that seemed a little more genuine than her last in response.]

...Yeah, that sounds pretty good to me.

Don't mention it.

[Before long they're standing at one of the tiny tables by the food stall with two solid portions of fish'n'chips in front of them. Hijikata grabs about a dozen of the little mayonnaise satchels (because why should he use his personal bottle when it's complimentary here?) and systematically empties one after the other on his meal until it's completely covered in the pale yellow condiment.]

[He starts digging in... Mukuro can just roll with this, surely. As the ultimate soldier she won't lose her appetite over him basically ingesting more egg goop than fish or chips here, right?]

Mukuro just stared as he unloaded satchel after satchel of mayonnaise onto his dish. Nothing much affected her appetite, of course, but this sure was a sight to behold.]

Uhh... don't you think you've put enough on? Maybe?

What do you mean?

[As long as he can still see the food it's not enough mayonnaise yet! His eyes wander down to Mukuro's portion, which presumably has a significantly smaller amount of whatever condiment she prefers.]
