Though it's been a year for us OOC, that timeline isn't necessarily something everyone thinks to celebrate, especially in the midst of all that's going on. What they are thinking about are more solutions to the food rationing for two very key reasons: 1. the winter solstice will be spent in Elphame next month, and food from the fae lands cannot be consumed by non-fae or there are very terrible side-effects, the details of which seem ominously vague. 2. winter is coming and with a lot more mouths to feed, the usual preparations likely weren't enough for everyone to remain healthy and happy. This has lead a cadre of likeminded mages to gather together and perform a ritual at Merlin's Step (past info here) to temper the rains and extend the harvest season a couple of weeks to reduce crop loss. Unfortunately, the magic flu is still at large, and someone thought they were above it all and attended the ritual, which has made things go... awry.

Event at a Glance

Prompt banner title: Winter Was Coming

Winter was coming.. and now it's here. Right now. The ritual has gone south thanks to the magical flu and a snowstorm has rocked Camelot overnight. There's about 6 feet deep of snow so those on the first floor of their buildings may have some trouble getting out.

The snow stays heavy throughout the day, and around sunset the power goes out in Camelot. Anyone who can is sharing a magical spell from olden days before electricity, (Spell) Candlebloom. Candlebloom can be cast by putting out a plate, bowl or anything and chanting the spell over it until a flower-shaped piece of wax begins to grow upward out of the surface.

Keep chanting, the petals will bloom, and then "melt" down to form the sides of a candle and fill in with wax. You can cast this on as many dishes as you have to create multiple light sources! They don't self-light though, so good luck!

Thankfully, living so close to the storm sprites up in the Ash Mountains has given Lestari's people ample knowledge about how to deal with sudden weather and living buried under plenty of stuff. They've got a special spell to dig tunnels under the deepening snow, so you may find yourself able to get to and from different locations through snow tunnels.. if you have a little bravery and faith to travel through them. It's kind of reminiscent of crawling through the tunnels of a fast food PlayPlace as a kid, especially since at the end of one of the tunnels, all of that missing snow is piled up in enchanted balls of snow that create a large (snow) ballpit, the magic keeping the snows bunched up into balls unless they are explicitly thrown (then they turn back to normal snowballs and will burst on contact).

Within the next days, the snowstorm evens out to alternating between snow and rain in the final weeks of the month. The Elphame Traders arrive in Camelot early, having rushed their journey and skipped a few of their usual stops on orders of the Fairy Queen to bring a special item for free distribution to all of the otherworlders in Camelot. Delivered to everyone is what appears to be a totem, woven together with a variety of dried plants pulled into wings held together with twine. At the end, a fragment of moldavite smaller than half your pinky nail. With it, a small half-inch wide scroll of paper that simply says:

"The Fairy Queen permits you safe travel to the Land of Maidens. Burn in December. We will bring the newcomers to us."

The totems are enchanted to be unburnable before December starts, so if your character tries, they will find themselves very frustrated and likely catching whatever is next to the totem on fire (including their own hand if they're foolish enough not to follow directions). The totem will only work once and does not include a recipe or a totem back to Camelot, so make sure you find someone who has one or you'll find yourself on the scenic route back.

The Elphame Traders plan to stick around the last two weeks of December to make sure everyone receives their Land of Maidens Totem. During this time, they have a "Sorry You've Been Stuck for a Year and Thanks!" Sale with some very intriguing free samples. Their new flavor of their hottie sauce that causes illusions of flowers and sparkles to form around your head when someone gazes upon you for the first time is a hot item! Try the Wuh-Woh Wrench, a small alan wrench that causes a non-fatal accident within earshot when you drop it. They really seem to be trying to get rid of the Snek Tunics, which just appear to be shirts with pictures of a cartoon snake on them. There are no disclaimers that when you get water on you in this, you turn into a Naga until you are able to completely dry. There's also a special free (Spell) Cool Firework donated by Merlin to help you celebrate, or commiserate-- with this spell, you can shoot rocket fireworks out of your fingers into the sky!

Baby It's Cold Outside

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-11-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hijikata has been trying valiantly to do his usual patrolling - well, adjusted to the sudden icy circumstances; he's been walking on the rooftops a lot -, but by now he's exhausted and chilled to the bone, so he follows Somnus into the shelter. Inside the shed he wraps his arms around himself, too tired to still try and look imposing.]

Candlebloom? I haven't learned it yet, but I've heard people practice it. Do you know it? Otherwise we can probably check AOL for instructions.

It is an old spell, from what others have said. [ He replies, crossing his arms over his chest to conserve warmth. ] There is a chant.
mayoninofukucho: (Routine)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-11-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, let's see...

[Hijikata checks AOL on his phone, and sure enough multiple people uploaded both written instructions and videos of how the spell is performed. He plays one of the streams, letting Somnus watch too, and when it's ended he looks around in the shed.]

Are there any plates or bowls or whatnot here that we can grow candles on safely? I'd rather not burn the place down by growing them on anything wooden.

[ ...It's a good thing Hijikata is able to navigate AOL so effectively, otherwise they might be out of options. As luck would have it, there is a clay candle dish. ]

Let us begin.

[ Somnus will recite the chant when Hijikata's ready. ]
mayoninofukucho: (Ready to go!)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-11-29 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Hijikata recites the chant together with Somnus, which makes him feel like a temple monk, but once the waxen flower bud starts forming at the centre of the candle dish he gets more confident and excited. As they keep chanting the flower grows, the leaves unfold, the bud opens and blooms, and finally the large petals wilt and fold themselves downwards against the stem, thickening the candle. Hijikata stops chanting when there's no further movement, instead summoning a small flame and lighting the wick at the top]

This is great! Now I've got the chant memorised for sure, too.

[Ultimately the single candle can't offer them much warmth, but at least it's a little comforting to know that they can, in theory, renew it over and over again if need be.]

[personal profile] luciing 2021-11-30 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Hijikata appears triumphant. Somnus' express remains more or less grim-- but this is nothing unusual. He sets the candle down between them. As meager as it is, it doesn't provide too much heat, but it does provide light.

It flickers, moving the shadows that accent his face. ]

They are able to practice elemancy with chants. One wonders if other magics can be replicated through recitations.

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this really elemental magic?

[He isn't sure if wax falls under any of the elements, but then he's still far from a scholar in the vast field of magical theory.]

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that there are chants for most kinds of magic. The first exorcism I learned, for one, relied on recitation.

[He removes his gloves and cups his hands halfways around the flame, trying to warm them up a little.]

I've found glyphs to be more effective though. They take more mana, but demand less concentration.

[personal profile] luciing 2021-12-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ Somnus nods in some amount of understanding, appearing interested in the subject. The technicality of magic isn't his forte, however, and kinetic power doesn't require much memorization or concentration to activate.

At least, not compared to other magics some may have upon the isle. ]

And glyphs can be written and activated later, can they not?
mayoninofukucho: (Uniform)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-09 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't tried that yet.

[He takes a moment to ponder the possibilities it would bring.]

I guess if you've got, say, light magic, and you set up some glyphs, then you could activate them to blind an enemy or create a hardlight barrier at just the right time... we really haven't explored all the options our magic offers us deeply enough yet, I think. But then again we also don't necessarily have the mana reserves to pull off stunts like that over a longer period of time.

[personal profile] luciing 2021-12-10 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ A brow raises. ]

You speak as if we contribute very little to the magic of this realm.
mayoninofukucho: (Well-Rested for Once)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-11 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hm? I know that us becoming magic wielders helps sustain the equilibrium or whatever, but the magics' forms and rules are fixed and much older than any of us, aren't they? So as new mages we have to learn and discover them.

[That, at least, is his rough understanding, but if Somnus has a different view he's interested in hearing it.]

Do you think we can shape them, or create new forms of usage?
luciing: (pic#14189122)

[personal profile] luciing 2021-12-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He nods. ]

It is magic, is it not? Should there be a need, there will be innovation.
mayoninofukucho: (Mission Complete)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-13 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you invented any spells or such? I honestly mainly take whatever I need from the texts I study, especially for the death magic. I wouldn't know how to even begin doing that intuitively. With elemental magic it's a lot easier, but even there I don't have the slightest idea of how I'd go about creating my own methods.
luciing: (pic#14192966)

[personal profile] luciing 2021-12-19 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A pause, and then he admits: ]

Not upon this star, nay.

[ But on his own world...? ]

Spell-making was a necessity.

[ He had developed a number of them. ]
mayoninofukucho: (Idle)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-20 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Really? What sorts of spells did you create?

[He has a hard time envisioning something as timeless as magical spells not having existed since the beginning of time, but only makes sense that like anything else that is used by mortals they were, at one point in distant eons, invented by them.]
luciing: (pic#14189122)

[personal profile] luciing 2021-12-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ A delay precedes his answer, his expression remaining as unchanging as stone. His tone, however, carries a faint touch of respect. ]

Death.
mayoninofukucho: (Really?)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-22 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, that gives Hijikata a solid mental record scratch.]

You created a death spell? Or do you mean you wholesale introduced death to your world?

[Wouldn't that make him a deity or somesuch? Well, or just the most reviled mage around.]
luciing: (pic#14093473)

[personal profile] luciing 2021-12-22 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
The former.

[ He clarifies, but only offers the bare minimum.

Somnus turns his head, looking towards Hijikata. ]

A similar magic is yours now, Deathmage, if not more versatile.
mayoninofukucho: (Are you serious?)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-12-22 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
What exactly did it do?

[He's still a little skeptical... so far Somnus struck him as a decent man, so surely he didn't invent a spell that instantly kills its target, right? That's what it sounded like to him at first, but if rather than that it's similar to the local death magic... well, that's a broad field, as Hijikata keeps experiencing.]
