The Adventurer's Guild's First Training Session | Open
🧙 WHO: Mitsuru Kirijo and anyone else interested
⚔️️ WHAT: The first meeting of the Adventurer’s Guild Mitsuru proposed.
đź•’ WHEN: Backdated to 10/15, one week after her network post
🗺️ WHERE: Lone Mountain Dojo
⚠️ WARNINGS: None at present, but will update as needed.
Shortly after her initial network post gauging interest, Mitsuru went about laying the groundwork for the group’s first meeting. Fortunately, things began to fall into place fairly quickly. Securing a practice area for them was easy enough, as Knight-san had been kind enough to allow them the use of his dojo’s training yard.
Once that was done, the rest was relatively minor by comparison -- purchasing small supplies; notifying everyone who had expressed interest in joining of the date, location, and time of their first meeting; posting a few fliers in the hopes of garnering more interest; devoting thought towards training exercises …
All the little tasks make the intervening week pass by quickly. Soon enough, the day of the guild’s first meeting arrives.
When people begin to filter in, they’ll find everything neatly organized so that the actual work can start quickly after a brief welcome.
The majority of the space inside the dojo has been set up for One-on-One Training, whether it’s individuals practicing magic, volunteers teaching their respective martial disciplines, or sparring matches between training partners.
The fenced-in training yard outside has some room delegated for these activities - particularly for those with mobility-enhancing magic or for whom area-of-effect is a potential concern - but most of that space has been reserved for Group Exercises. Mitsuru has prepared a Capture the Flag-esque exercise where teams or individuals must try to steal their opponent’s flag while protecting their own, but participants are also encouraged to devise and share their own ideas as well.
Anyone participating in the training session is free to move between activities as they see fit. Should they have difficulty finding a partner or group, Mitsuru will assist them when she isn’t actively involved in an exercise herself. She’s also taken the liberty of purchasing water and high-protein snacks to keep everyone hydrated and energized, which she has laid out on a table on the dojo’s main floor.
(( Just for the sake of clarity, this post is totally open to anyone - regardless of whether or not they responded to Mitsuru’s initial network post. Feel free to use one of the above prompts, or add in your own! ))

Princess Allura | OTA
While she's dressed and prepped for combat, Allura hasn't sought anyone else out for training. It's a well-studied subject for her, and something that she gets practice for regularly. And while there's always room for improvement, she would rather spend the time helping others than push herself to new levels.
For now, she's watching for opportunities to give some kind advice to others who still seem to be working on their form, particularly those who prefer martial arts or staves to heavier bladed weapons.
This also makes her approachable for anyone who might seek her out, whether for some direct instruction or to challenge as a sparring partner. And either way, her response would be the same:
"Certainly. What are you interested in? Staves, polearms — perhaps whips? Or would you rather we work on hand-to-hand?"
B. A Student of Ranged
There was one weapon that had always interested Allura, but which she had been denied the opportunity to even hold, never mind learn how to wield. It was a weapon she had only ever read about, one from far back before the age of Altean spaceships and robots — and, most crucially, before the advent of laser weaponry.
Because why should she learn how to shoot a bow and arrow? There was nothing bows could do that guns couldn't do better. Her instructors didn't even humor the impractical suggestion, insisting it was better left to the realm of history and fantasy. But Allura could never fully explain it, why these older weapons caught her interest and guns never did.
And now, ever since her arrival in Avalon, the thought has been stirring in the back of her mind. With space technology being so difficult to acquire, the bow was suddenly a far more practical choice. So... why not pick it up now?
She sneaks off to a corner of the training yard, as if she's already afraid of making a fool of herself, and tries to nock an arrow based solely on what she read about Altean bows when she was younger.
And, to be fair, it's not entirely wrong? It's just not exactly right.
C. Capture The Flag
This little group skirmish has been at a stalemate for a while now, and while both sides are looking tired of the matchup, neither group has reached the point where they want to give up on victory.
"We need something that will catch them by surprise. I've used Firework a few too many times already." She looks down at her own hands as she discusses the options. She's not burnt out on using magic, not yet — but her magic's strength rarely showed in battle, especially not in such a friendly arena.
Looking up, she asks, "Do you have any other ideas?"
A
Morgan, after all, didn't exactly need 'training' in the sense of practice to improve -- at his level, his improvement came from perfecting his own style and self. To that end, helping someone else and learning from someone else were exactly the same.
For his own part, Morgan wasn't even wearing his usual sword or coat that doubled as armor. Nor did he seem particularly interested in taking any sort of stance to start with.
no subject
"All right. Just a moment."
She looks over a number of weapons provided for training, and selects a long bo staff. And gives it a quick twirl with both hands to ensure that it's of a good make, solid enough to handle forceful strikes but light enough to be swung swiftly. And then, she turns and walks back towards him, holding the staff off to the side and a little behind her.
"So, what sort of match would you prefer? First to land a hit, first to surrender...?"

C.
"I say we plant these where they're headed, and cover the area in something to make their movement and visibility difficult."
He likes to create barriers and obstacles, setting traps and... these may not be fireworks, but Gokudera is packing so many explosives constantly on his person that he can't not offer dynamite as an option. If it goes off before the other team reaches it, the fight won't actually hurt anyone, but they can create enough fear and avoidance to create a little more chaos. It's hard to lead a team in capture the flag if they can't work together, see, or navigate properly.
"Don't worry, it'll be more loud than dangerous."
Gokudera isn't interested in injuring anyone in a group skirmish like this. His light magic can make the explosions seem bigger, the blasts startling and almost blinding.
no subject
But she still seems thoughtful, as she turns her attention to the course that had been set up for the game.
"How long does it take to set each of those up? Unless it's quick, we might not have time to plant many."

A
Her hair is done up in its usual professional braid, but she's dressed much lighter; a green tank-top and leggings, attire more appropriate for an exercising session.
no subject
So instead, Allura smiles warmly, and replies, "It would be my pleasure. Just to start, could you show me some of what you know?" It's not merely to get a sense for Chris' skill level, but also what sort of style she uses. Her own favored techniques might most closely resembles Earth's judo, but she does know a fair bit about other styles.

Saber (Artoria Pendragon) | Fate/Stay Night | OTA
(1) Sword Training... yeah lets call it that
[ Saber was prompt in setting herself up as an instructor for learning how to use a sword. Kendo training swords made of bamboo are her practice weapon of choice, and so she's managed to procure a number of similar weapons to use instead of actual weapons, which would be quite dangerous.By all means, she seems like a good choice to learn from. She's a dignified knight with a respectable air about her as she stands waiting for a student. Should you join her, however... ]
I may teach you my techniques, however, what is most important is knowing how to fend for yourself in a real battle where your life is on the line. [ She'll toss you a bamboo sword and wait for you to grip it. ] Therefore, though we are using training weapons, I shall place you in that situation. This will also allow me to assess your current level of skill. Put simply, we are going to fight, and let us do so holding nothing back.
[ Regardless of however you're reacting to this, she promptly enters her sword stance and... ]
Begin!
[ ...there is now a bamboo sword being swung at your head. Dodge, block, get knocked out... however you respond to this, whether this is the first time you've ever held a sword or not, this is happening now.
Welcome to Saber's training session! Try not to actually die to a training sword! Either that, or you can catch her taking a break afterward, tired from all of the fighting... but unlike most who have trained with her, barely injured. ]
(2) Magic Student
[ If there's one thing she's limited in, it's magic. Not that she isn't good at it! It's just... whenever she uses magic, it's usually in a form that's suitable for her. Creating a sword out of a light construct, maybe even other elements... but unless it involves melee combat, her skills at magic... don't improve easily. ]Hn... magecraft was never my specialty...
[ Hnn... why can't she just stick to using her magic around a sword? She can turn her sword invisible, after all! Just... not anything else. ]
Wildcard
[ The basic wildcard gist. ]1
Doesn't work that way.
[Morgan counters in the time-honored way: slapping his hands together, catching the training sword by the faux-blade before it can strike his head.]
In a real battle, your obligation is to stop the opponent in the most efficient and effective way possible. Can't do that with a training sword. You're holding back by definition.
[This is a topic he has Very, Very Strong Opinions about, as it happens -- and any student of his needs to know the difference between martial arts and fighting. And her theory isn't wrong, far from it, but he can't permit the claim that they're holding nothing back to go unchallenged!]
But go as all-out as you can!
no subject
Be that as it may, these are excellent imitation swords. We fight as though to kill, however our weapons restrain us from doing so.
[ Her stance hardens again. She'd figured this was obvious, but there was no way to give the feeling of a true fight if she were to hold her blows back from causing any fatal injuries. With this, however, she can at least hold nothing back and her opponent will have nothing more than bruises to worry about. Nobody she fights with this weapon will have to worry about dying, but it certainly won't tickle either.
In any case, however, it seems that Morgan is already adept at fighting. A good sign, and reason for Saber to not waste another moment speaking and instead sending another flurry of blows with the shinai in-hand. If any normal person had to face something like this, they'd probably end up being knocked out by the first blow, aimed with precision that could kill if not for the lack of an edge in her current blade. ]

WHAM. That's what he gets for having a flashback and not paying attention! And just like that, Kotarou goes flying back onto the floor while holding his head with a huge bump. If he wanted to get stronger, then he was going to try and steal some of Saber's techniques! He didn't have to become the strongest swordsman around, he just wanted to get better to protect himself and his friends.]
W-What the hell was that!? Were you attacking me with a sword or a tank cannon!?
[If he had enough energy to snap back, then he was clearly okay. Kotarou was pretty damn durable despite his looks.]
no subject
[ Well, fortunately for Kotarou, it isn't personal. She's this ruthless with everyone she trains... but at the same time, this feels somewhat therapeutic. He says he is Gawain's squire, yes? Then he'd best learn how to deal with these attacks at the very least. ]
I am merely attacking the way I would with any enemy I face. Hence, the use of shinai rather than real blades.
[ She returns to her stance once again and waits for Kotarou to get back on his feet. ]
Still, I had hoped you would at least survive the first attack. Well, no matter, I promise that by the end of the hour, you will be able to survive an assault from me.

[Hanabi has no training with swords, but she does have training with hand to hand combat, as well as in using kunai. It's obvious in her footwork and reaction time. She's prepared for Saber's attack, and there's no hesitation or fear. Just determination to learn while doing.
Her immediate reaction is to dodge, side-stepping the strike at her head and pivoting to add force to her counter-strike, aimed at Saber's ribs.]
no subject
[ The first reaction says a lot about how much experience a person has... or at least in this case, training and diligence. In any case, Saber's momentum stops abruptly as she digs her foot into the ground and pivots to block the counter-strike with the hilt of her shinai. Something that is immediately followed up with a counter-attack of her own, a flurry of slashes without pause, and it certainly doesn't seem like she plans on stopping short with any of them. ]

Morgan Knight (the guy whose dojo this is!)
"Welcome to the Lone Mountain dojo."
For today, the dojo was pretty casual. Mats for sparring and tumbling, open areas for practice, the usual esoteric stuff like a bowl of rice you have to move grain-by-grain with chopsticks through an agonizing series of hanging crunches in the backyard... No insistence on rank, proper address, or any obligatory enforcement of respect. Morgan himself wasn't in a uniform or anything, just his usual T-shirt and pants without coat or sword.
"There's some food and drinks out back, restrooms are down that hall, and if you're interested in more formal training we offer classes for every skill level."
Morgan's motive for offering the place had indeed been altruistic, but he sure as hell wasn't above taking the chance to get more actual students enrolled!
Choose Your Density
Placing himself out on the training floor, Morgan acknowledged anyone coming his way with a smile and a question.
"Learning, or sparring?"
Not that the two were mutually exclusive, of course.
no subject
"Sparring, please and thank you," Hanabi replied. While there was always more to learn, no matter how skilled a person was, she was no beginner. With the exception of not using her magic, she intended on holding nothing else back. She'd use a blend of her clan's fighting style and the techniques taught at the Academy. Though she could hit surprisingly hard for a 4'4" girl, she knew an experienced adult martial artist could handle it.
The only way for him to know exactly where she was at as a fighter, and what she could most benefit from learning, was to give the sparring match her all.
When she got into stance, there was a look of intense focus on her face.
:)
Morgan was not about to underestimate her! He'd been raised learning martial arts, and had been pretty good at her age... but martial arts hadn't truly become a passion, a lifestyle, till later. Someone with a more serious focus on, and love for, the skills at that age would be that much better.
On the other hand, it might seem like he wasn't taking her seriously, as he took no stance at all, but that was just his way. His philosophy was to reveal nothing and to prepare for nothing; both required commitment, something Morgan avoided as much as possible until he was certain it could accomplish what he wanted it to. It also put him at a disadvantage by making striking first much more difficult, but that went along with his philosophy too -- let the opponent make the first move.
So he twitched his head back slightly, with a smile. Bring it on.

Hayato Gokudera || OTA
[Gokudera is not great with a sword, or with hand-to-hand combat. He's more a mid-range fighter and explosives expert. But that doesn't mean that he can't train, or challenge people to throw things. At least a frisbee is safe? He's not so used to throwing them, but his aim seems astonishingly good. He's also pretty skilled with a bow and arrow.]
[He's sitting on the ground in the dojo and making paper airplanes. Those are going to be the targets. Maybe he's learned a thing or two about origami since the worrigami helped him through a rough patch. Maybe he just needs to keep his hands busy? He seems to be keeping to himself, filling up a box with the paper aircrafts.]
B. Rocket Bombs
[Gokudera is flying paper airplanes, then throwing sticks of dynamite up in the air to hit them. He's pretty good at it, and when/if he misses, the most damage that occurs is probably to his (or surrounding) eardrums. There's a lot of smoke, a lot of noise, and a few gusts of wind from the explosions. None are going off near the ground, or putting anyone in danger. The boy is just flying planes, then blowing them up.]
Want to take a shot?
[He flies another plane, then uses his elemental magic to push it up higher into the air and at a much safer distance from the dojo or any of the people in this Guild. Gokudera is not offering dynamite, but maybe you could talk him out of handing you over a smoke bomb to try it out.
Blowing stuff up is fun, ok?]
B
[ When Gokudera invited her to participate, she nodded. ]
I had been wondering why you spent so much time making these. Quite clever.
[ Mitsuru says, taking a few steps forward as he sends the paper plane gusting into the air. She draws her rapier from its sheath, watching the plane for a moment before flicking the blade in its direction and sending a magically-conjured shard of ice flying after it.
[ She misses. Narrowly, but it's still a miss. Driven as she is, she's annoyed by that. ]
no subject
Don't aim at it. Aim for where it's going.
[The boy's tone is thoughtful, a natural growl to his voice that many would take as a sign of irritation, but it's just that he's focused on training his own skills in a different way. He hadn't been expecting her to join him, but he's not unhappy about it.]
Gokudera's using his wind now to keep the airplane flying on track, further from them still before making it gently curve. Once she hits it, he may test her range with ice. It'll also be training for his magically conjured wind and how he uses it as an extension to guide the paper plane.]
My apologies for the delay ... this month hasn't been great for my tag drive, but it's coming back
No worries, dude! Take as much time as you need!
Much appreciated ;;

And then I took forever
Mitsuru Kirijo | OTA
[ Today, Mitsuru has forgone her usual simple-but-stylish clothing in favor of the black bodysuit that she’d worn during the tournament in Celliwig, with her rapier belted at her waist.
[ Once the given time for the meeting’s start arrived, Mitsuru gave a brief opening statement, welcoming everyone and outlining the training exercises that she had organized for the day. If they had any questions or concerns, they should feel free to approach her with them. Then, she thanks them for their time and their commitment, and ends her address with one, simple statement.
[ She’s available if anyone would like fencing instruction, or a sparring partner. All they need to do is ask.
[ From there, people disperse. They begin to pair off or make their way out towards the training yard. Mitsuru doesn’t move to do the same, at least not immediately. First, she does her due diligence as this group’s organizer - walking around to ensure that everything was going smoothly, to make sure that everybody had found a partner or other productive way to occupy themselves.
[ If someone approaches her, requesting to pair off with her, she’ll turn and greet them with a smile. ]
I’d be happy to.
[ Coaching ]
[ Should anyone approach her searching for instruction, she’ll greet them just as warmly. ]
Of course.
[ She nods, giving her prospective student an appraising once over. ]
Do you have any prior experience, or would you need to begin from the very basics?
[ Capture the Flag ]
[ The exercise began with both teams clashing in the middle of the field, and quickly devolved into a series of rapidly shifting skirmishes from there. Team members drifted between the smaller engagements, throwing different combinations at their opposition to see if one might finally allow the breakthrough they needed to win.
[ It was a messy attempt at teamwork, one that was largely happening through individuals recognizing openings and trying to exploit them, but it was an encouraging sign nonetheless.
[ She wasn’t afforded much time to enjoy that first step, though. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a figure slipping past the ragged front line, and breaking toward her team’s flag.
[ As pleased as she was with the progress she’s seeing, she still didn’t have any intention of losing.
[ With a wave of her hand, she conjured a wall of ice. It erupted up through the ground piece by piece in jagged, crystalline points, racing forward until it overtook the opposition, at which point it abruptly turned hard to the left and curved back. The end result was a fish-hook shaped barrier that left her opponent with no direction to turn but back towards her. ]
Not quite enough, I’m afraid.
[ Wildcard ]
[ If there’s an interaction you want to play out that’s not covered by the previous starters, feel free to chime in with your own! ]
Sparring
Silent observer before he's quietly stepping forward, tugging on wristguards. He wants to spar, too, of course, and so his best opportunity's found through differing styles, new faces, pitting his strategies against their various types of magics. But this is all he's used to—sparring his gauge to determine his own burrowed weaknesses. Each fight a measurement. Every match competition, pairing himself against his newest opponents. He'll challenge the strongest if it means he's preparing for something. Preventing the worst.
He's smiling dimly back.]
I'm Todoroki, by the way. [In person now.] Are we using our magic first?
[He doesn't mind either way.]
I am SO sorry this took so long, tag drive's just been dead for a good chunk of the month.
[ She quickly glances around the room, scanning their surroundings for a sufficiently large open space. Locating one, she gestures for him to follow and begins walking. ]
As to the terms of our bout, I don't have a strong preference. Testing our magical ability against each other might be the most productive use of our time, but I'd be happy to practice hand-to-hand as well, whether armed or unarmed.

Nor is he going into this with a weapon, since he definitely understands the foil vs. bastard sword matchup. Not much to learn there...]
I'm so sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
