The Adventurer's Guild's First Training Session | Open

🧙 WHO: Mitsuru Kirijo and anyone else interested
⚔️️ WHAT: The first meeting of the Adventurer’s Guild Mitsuru proposed.
đź•’ WHEN: Backdated to 10/15, one week after her network post
🗺️ WHERE: Lone Mountain Dojo
⚠️ WARNINGS: None at present, but will update as needed.

Shortly after her initial network post gauging interest, Mitsuru went about laying the groundwork for the group’s first meeting. Fortunately, things began to fall into place fairly quickly. Securing a practice area for them was easy enough, as Knight-san had been kind enough to allow them the use of his dojo’s training yard.

Once that was done, the rest was relatively minor by comparison -- purchasing small supplies; notifying everyone who had expressed interest in joining of the date, location, and time of their first meeting; posting a few fliers in the hopes of garnering more interest; devoting thought towards training exercises …

All the little tasks make the intervening week pass by quickly. Soon enough, the day of the guild’s first meeting arrives.

When people begin to filter in, they’ll find everything neatly organized so that the actual work can start quickly after a brief welcome.

The majority of the space inside the dojo has been set up for One-on-One Training, whether it’s individuals practicing magic, volunteers teaching their respective martial disciplines, or sparring matches between training partners.

The fenced-in training yard outside has some room delegated for these activities - particularly for those with mobility-enhancing magic or for whom area-of-effect is a potential concern - but most of that space has been reserved for Group Exercises. Mitsuru has prepared a Capture the Flag-esque exercise where teams or individuals must try to steal their opponent’s flag while protecting their own, but participants are also encouraged to devise and share their own ideas as well.

Anyone participating in the training session is free to move between activities as they see fit. Should they have difficulty finding a partner or group, Mitsuru will assist them when she isn’t actively involved in an exercise herself. She’s also taken the liberty of purchasing water and high-protein snacks to keep everyone hydrated and energized, which she has laid out on a table on the dojo’s main floor.

(( Just for the sake of clarity, this post is totally open to anyone - regardless of whether or not they responded to Mitsuru’s initial network post. Feel free to use one of the above prompts, or add in your own! ))

A. A Teacher of Melee

While she's dressed and prepped for combat, Allura hasn't sought anyone else out for training. It's a well-studied subject for her, and something that she gets practice for regularly. And while there's always room for improvement, she would rather spend the time helping others than push herself to new levels.

For now, she's watching for opportunities to give some kind advice to others who still seem to be working on their form, particularly those who prefer martial arts or staves to heavier bladed weapons.

This also makes her approachable for anyone who might seek her out, whether for some direct instruction or to challenge as a sparring partner. And either way, her response would be the same:

"Certainly. What are you interested in? Staves, polearms — perhaps whips? Or would you rather we work on hand-to-hand?"

B. A Student of Ranged

There was one weapon that had always interested Allura, but which she had been denied the opportunity to even hold, never mind learn how to wield. It was a weapon she had only ever read about, one from far back before the age of Altean spaceships and robots — and, most crucially, before the advent of laser weaponry.

Because why should she learn how to shoot a bow and arrow? There was nothing bows could do that guns couldn't do better. Her instructors didn't even humor the impractical suggestion, insisting it was better left to the realm of history and fantasy. But Allura could never fully explain it, why these older weapons caught her interest and guns never did.

And now, ever since her arrival in Avalon, the thought has been stirring in the back of her mind. With space technology being so difficult to acquire, the bow was suddenly a far more practical choice. So... why not pick it up now?

She sneaks off to a corner of the training yard, as if she's already afraid of making a fool of herself, and tries to nock an arrow based solely on what she read about Altean bows when she was younger.

And, to be fair, it's not entirely wrong? It's just not exactly right.

C. Capture The Flag

This little group skirmish has been at a stalemate for a while now, and while both sides are looking tired of the matchup, neither group has reached the point where they want to give up on victory.

"We need something that will catch them by surprise. I've used Firework a few too many times already." She looks down at her own hands as she discusses the options. She's not burnt out on using magic, not yet — but her magic's strength rarely showed in battle, especially not in such a friendly arena.

Looking up, she asks, "Do you have any other ideas?"

(1) Sword Training... yeah lets call it that

[ Saber was prompt in setting herself up as an instructor for learning how to use a sword. Kendo training swords made of bamboo are her practice weapon of choice, and so she's managed to procure a number of similar weapons to use instead of actual weapons, which would be quite dangerous.

By all means, she seems like a good choice to learn from. She's a dignified knight with a respectable air about her as she stands waiting for a student. Should you join her, however... ]

I may teach you my techniques, however, what is most important is knowing how to fend for yourself in a real battle where your life is on the line. [ She'll toss you a bamboo sword and wait for you to grip it. ] Therefore, though we are using training weapons, I shall place you in that situation. This will also allow me to assess your current level of skill. Put simply, we are going to fight, and let us do so holding nothing back.

[ Regardless of however you're reacting to this, she promptly enters her sword stance and... ]

Begin!

[ ...there is now a bamboo sword being swung at your head. Dodge, block, get knocked out... however you respond to this, whether this is the first time you've ever held a sword or not, this is happening now.

Welcome to Saber's training session! Try not to actually die to a training sword! Either that, or you can catch her taking a break afterward, tired from all of the fighting... but unlike most who have trained with her, barely injured. ]

(2) Magic Student

[ If there's one thing she's limited in, it's magic. Not that she isn't good at it! It's just... whenever she uses magic, it's usually in a form that's suitable for her. Creating a sword out of a light construct, maybe even other elements... but unless it involves melee combat, her skills at magic... don't improve easily. ]

Hn... magecraft was never my specialty...

[ Hnn... why can't she just stick to using her magic around a sword? She can turn her sword invisible, after all! Just... not anything else. ]

Wildcard

[ The basic wildcard gist. ]

"Whatever you're best with. I want to see your style and technique more than anything."

Morgan, after all, didn't exactly need 'training' in the sense of practice to improve -- at his level, his improvement came from perfecting his own style and self. To that end, helping someone else and learning from someone else were exactly the same.

For his own part, Morgan wasn't even wearing his usual sword or coat that doubled as armor. Nor did he seem particularly interested in taking any sort of stance to start with.

[Well. If she's going to be like that...]

Doesn't work that way.

[Morgan counters in the time-honored way: slapping his hands together, catching the training sword by the faux-blade before it can strike his head.]

In a real battle, your obligation is to stop the opponent in the most efficient and effective way possible. Can't do that with a training sword. You're holding back by definition.

[This is a topic he has Very, Very Strong Opinions about, as it happens -- and any student of his needs to know the difference between martial arts and fighting. And her theory isn't wrong, far from it, but he can't permit the claim that they're holding nothing back to go unchallenged!]

But go as all-out as you can!

Hello, Hello

"Welcome to the Lone Mountain dojo."

For today, the dojo was pretty casual. Mats for sparring and tumbling, open areas for practice, the usual esoteric stuff like a bowl of rice you have to move grain-by-grain with chopsticks through an agonizing series of hanging crunches in the backyard... No insistence on rank, proper address, or any obligatory enforcement of respect. Morgan himself wasn't in a uniform or anything, just his usual T-shirt and pants without coat or sword.

"There's some food and drinks out back, restrooms are down that hall, and if you're interested in more formal training we offer classes for every skill level."

Morgan's motive for offering the place had indeed been altruistic, but he sure as hell wasn't above taking the chance to get more actual students enrolled!

Choose Your Density

Placing himself out on the training floor, Morgan acknowledged anyone coming his way with a smile and a question.

"Learning, or sparring?"

Not that the two were mutually exclusive, of course.

[ Well, impressive block. Last time Saber started this training, Shirou ended up laid out on the ground. ]

Be that as it may, these are excellent imitation swords. We fight as though to kill, however our weapons restrain us from doing so.

[ Her stance hardens again. She'd figured this was obvious, but there was no way to give the feeling of a true fight if she were to hold her blows back from causing any fatal injuries. With this, however, she can at least hold nothing back and her opponent will have nothing more than bruises to worry about. Nobody she fights with this weapon will have to worry about dying, but it certainly won't tickle either.

In any case, however, it seems that Morgan is already adept at fighting. A good sign, and reason for Saber to not waste another moment speaking and instead sending another flurry of blows with the shinai in-hand. If any normal person had to face something like this, they'd probably end up being knocked out by the first blow, aimed with precision that could kill if not for the lack of an edge in her current blade. ]

We hardly need weapons to kill each other.

[Her aggression gives him an advantage, as his style seeks to let the opponent commit first, then intercept and counter them. With a precise move of his arm, he deflects the first so it misses him by a hair, then steps in swiftly. If he can get within her effective range, her weapon will lose a lot of its effectiveness -- and if she favors it, as he believes, she'll naturally try to move to regain that effectiveness, giving him the chance to turn that motion against her. It's classic, textbook soft-style martial arts.]

[Now this actually wasn't the first time that Kotarou has held a sword nor been in a sparring match. Actually, he was feeling a little nostalgic since the last time that he trained like this was in Guardian. Yes, it took him back to the days where he trained with Esaka and gotten his ass kicked--

WHAM. That's what he gets for having a flashback and not paying attention! And just like that, Kotarou goes flying back onto the floor while holding his head with a huge bump. If he wanted to get stronger, then he was going to try and steal some of Saber's techniques! He didn't have to become the strongest swordsman around, he just wanted to get better to protect himself and his friends.]

W-What the hell was that!? Were you attacking me with a sword or a tank cannon!?

[If he had enough energy to snap back, then he was clearly okay. Kotarou was pretty damn durable despite his looks.]

[ Simple tricks like that aren't enough to get past Saber, and the first deflected swing is almost immediately transitioned into another slash without a single pause. It's as if she swung expecting a move such as Morgan's, but in truth, she simply reacted instinctively to his first step in an attempt to get within her effective range.

There is little to no pause as she pushes back against Morgan. Regardless of whatever happens, it's clear that her opponent is experienced. ]

Hoh? You're still conscious? Impressive.

[ Well, fortunately for Kotarou, it isn't personal. She's this ruthless with everyone she trains... but at the same time, this feels somewhat therapeutic. He says he is Gawain's squire, yes? Then he'd best learn how to deal with these attacks at the very least. ]

I am merely attacking the way I would with any enemy I face. Hence, the use of shinai rather than real blades.

[ She returns to her stance once again and waits for Kotarou to get back on his feet. ]

Still, I had hoped you would at least survive the first attack. Well, no matter, I promise that by the end of the hour, you will be able to survive an assault from me.

You caught me in a bit of a moment! I got lost on the road to life, but I'm back in the game now!

[That being said, Kotarou gets back up in a new stance with a fierce grin on his face. All he had to do was last for one hour? Well, it was probably going to leave him stinging all over. But as the saying goes: No pain, no gain. Besides, he was sure that Gawain would be pushing him to better himself and that was something that he always strived for.]

Heh heh! I'm not gonna make it easy this time! Believe it or not, I've fought against some really strong people too.

[Esaka and Sakuya had came to his mind before he leaps in to try and strike Saber at her left side. Kotarou had to remember that the thing about sword fights was anticipating what your opponent would do next. If you couldn't, then you simply improvised! Flexibility and unpredictability was something Kotarou hoped that he could keep in his back pocket.]

[ He's evidently much more prepared now, though by the end of this she hopes to have taught him to always be prepared and not get laid out so easily from the get-go. There's definitely some experience behind the stance, so she believes him when he says he's fought against strong opponents, but... ]

...!

[ The swing at her side is promptly parried, and without a single pause, is followed up by an upward swing at Kotarou's jaw. To be frank, comparing her to a whirlwind wouldn't be inaccurate. ]

Gyaaaaah!

[Kotarou is promptly smacked in the face by her shinai and goes flying over to the side. He even throws his shinai in the middle of the blow as it also goes flying past Saber's shoulder. A third person party would think that he just let it go out of sheer inexperience. But this was actually a set-up for a little trick of his. One rule of fighting was to deceive your opponent and lure them into a false sense of security. If they were acting like this was a real battle, then he'd have to fight more unorthodoxly. She never said that magic was banned from this training fight, right?

Once Kotarou catches himself from hitting the floor, he lifts his left wrist revealing a faint scar where a string of blood shoots out like webbing and flies past Saber's shoulder to catch his shinai before it falls and he reels it right back to try and hit her on the back of her head! He felt a little dizzy pulling this off, but whatever worked!]

excalibeam: (Bullet)

[personal profile] excalibeam 2021-10-28 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ Blood magic? It's something of a surprise to see blood shoot out like webbing, but she doesn't remember permitting magic.

Kotarou will also learn today not to underestimate Instinct Rank A. ]

Hm...!

[ Wind will suddenly pick up around Saber's Shinai as she pivots, dodging the sword coming from behind, and as it passes her shoulder... ]

Hah...!

[ She swings her sword up, knocking the flying sword up in the air while the sharp winds around Saber's weapon cuts the blood webbing. Then, without wasting a second...

...Saber brings her shinai down on Kotarou's head. She expects Kotarou to be fine, but this certainly isn't going to tickle. ]
morganknight: (grin)

[personal profile] morganknight 2021-10-28 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay! Not gonna win this one without a little risk, clearly! As she brings forward her next slash, Morgan steps in again -- this time, the deflection with his forearm turning seamlessly into a strike, the heel of his hand aimed for her collarbone. At the same time, he twists one foot around to get it behind hers. That's the true attack, a trip she hopefully won't anticipate.]
scriptwriter: (HE HEXES ASSES!!)

[personal profile] scriptwriter 2021-10-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Wind!? Wind?! Just what was that?! Kotarou is left flabbergasted whenever Saber completely sees through his brilliant plan! First, his shinai was deflected like nothing. Then his blood webbing was completely sliced away, then he feels the shinai hitting his head hard as he goes crashing onto the dojo floor.

Surprisingly, he's not unconscious after that... But he's holding his head with a painful groan. There was one thing that he could process very quickly after that display. There was no harsh winds flowing through the dojo, so he came to one conclusion.]

What the hell was THAT!? You just used wind magic, didn't you!? When the hell was that allowed?!

Gokudera approaches her and offers her a bundle of dynamite.

"I say we plant these where they're headed, and cover the area in something to make their movement and visibility difficult."

He likes to create barriers and obstacles, setting traps and... these may not be fireworks, but Gokudera is packing so many explosives constantly on his person that he can't not offer dynamite as an option. If it goes off before the other team reaches it, the fight won't actually hurt anyone, but they can create enough fear and avoidance to create a little more chaos. It's hard to lead a team in capture the flag if they can't work together, see, or navigate properly.

"Don't worry, it'll be more loud than dangerous."

Gokudera isn't interested in injuring anyone in a group skirmish like this. His light magic can make the explosions seem bigger, the blasts startling and almost blinding.

A. Another type of origami?

[Gokudera is not great with a sword, or with hand-to-hand combat. He's more a mid-range fighter and explosives expert. But that doesn't mean that he can't train, or challenge people to throw things. At least a frisbee is safe? He's not so used to throwing them, but his aim seems astonishingly good. He's also pretty skilled with a bow and arrow.]

[He's sitting on the ground in the dojo and making paper airplanes. Those are going to be the targets. Maybe he's learned a thing or two about origami since the worrigami helped him through a rough patch. Maybe he just needs to keep his hands busy? He seems to be keeping to himself, filling up a box with the paper aircrafts.]

B. Rocket Bombs

[Gokudera is flying paper airplanes, then throwing sticks of dynamite up in the air to hit them. He's pretty good at it, and when/if he misses, the most damage that occurs is probably to his (or surrounding) eardrums. There's a lot of smoke, a lot of noise, and a few gusts of wind from the explosions. None are going off near the ground, or putting anyone in danger. The boy is just flying planes, then blowing them up.]

Want to take a shot?

[He flies another plane, then uses his elemental magic to push it up higher into the air and at a much safer distance from the dojo or any of the people in this Guild. Gokudera is not offering dynamite, but maybe you could talk him out of handing you over a smoke bomb to try it out.

Blowing stuff up is fun, ok?]

I do not believe I allowed the use of Blood Magic either, young man.

[ Seriously, she honestly expected him to lose consciousness by now. If anything, he's inherited Gawain's resilience. ]

Consider that your punishment. Utilizing your magic to add to your strength is well and good, but we are fighting without it right now.

[ She takes a step back into her own position and holds her Shinai at the ready again, Kotarou's landing nearby. ]

Utilize whatever forms of trickery you have available. Without magic, however. ]

What?! Hey, it'd still count if I used my shinai! I was just bending the rules a little bit.

[But if this were the rules, then he'd have to follow them. He says as he sits back up to fold his arms. His shinai was close by, but it'd be useless to pick it up if he didn't have a plan or two. Think, think, think... Even if he had his rewriting ability, Kotarou would've found it useless to use against Saber.]

"Hand to hand, if you'd be so kind." Chris replies, extending a hand to the Altean. Though this is the first time they've ever spent any real time together, she knows vaguely of Allura thanks to their shared connection via two very stupid but admirable men. And now, still in the middle of her somewhat involuntary (but, as Chris ruefully recognizes, entirely necessary) rest period, she's looking much better now than she was a week or two ago. But while rest is all well and good, it's equally important to Chris that she find ways to be active, "sparring" sessions with Hawk of a decidedly more private nature notwithstanding. A bit of light training never fails to lift her mood, and hand to hand combat is an area Chris has always been deficient in, relying on her swordarm and armour as she has in the past. Coming to Allura for training kills several birds with one well-placed stone.

Her hair is done up in its usual professional braid, but she's dressed much lighter; a green tank-top and leggings, attire more appropriate for an exercising session.

Rather than jump to one of the options, Allura has pause and think about it. At her level of skill, she didn't often judge which she would use based on the adeptness for the weapon, but what suited the situation. For example, her bayard would usually default to a whip, since it helped with multiple enemies and wrangling larger monsters. For a duel? There were stronger choices.

"All right. Just a moment."

She looks over a number of weapons provided for training, and selects a long bo staff. And gives it a quick twirl with both hands to ensure that it's of a good make, solid enough to handle forceful strikes but light enough to be swung swiftly. And then, she turns and walks back towards him, holding the staff off to the side and a little behind her.

"So, what sort of match would you prefer? First to land a hit, first to surrender...?"

"So, instead of distracting them with the small burst of Firework, you think we should use much bigger explosions?" It sounds like she's being sassy about the idea, but truthfully... "... that could work. That way, we're not limited by blinding one target at a time. We could not only block their vision, but control their movement..."

But she still seems thoughtful, as she turns her attention to the course that had been set up for the game.

"How long does it take to set each of those up? Unless it's quick, we might not have time to plant many."

She accepts the hand — and, despite the perfect opportunity, does not take the opportunity to pull her into a lock or throw her across the dojo. It would be a very effective way to start the lesson, and one that her own teachers would have employed. But Allura is as much a diplomat as a warrior, and that seems like a good way to kill off a friendship before it truly started.

So instead, Allura smiles warmly, and replies, "It would be my pleasure. Just to start, could you show me some of what you know?" It's not merely to get a sense for Chris' skill level, but also what sort of style she uses. Her own favored techniques might most closely resembles Earth's judo, but she does know a fair bit about other styles.
