You gotta live better than you were though
🧙 WHO: Gokudera and YOU
⚔️️ WHAT: August catch-all! OTA
🕒 WHEN: August
🗺️ WHERE: New Camelot (predominantly)
⚠️ WARNINGS: Language, violence, drugs, mentions of past trauma: self-immolation, slavery
I. Healing Circle After Party
Despite most of his friends helping him, Gokudera has felt very alone since he learned of Yamamoto's absence. It's not the first time he's lost someone he's cared about. He's not being loud about his heartbreak and has seen on the network that others have lost some people important to them as well. But how often do you lose six different versions of your same friend/rival from home?
Gokudera feels a bit numb, and the strangulation he faced before is healed, but... still, there's pain. It feels like it never goes away, and on his own self-reflection, he realizes it's because he's focusing on it. He needs to use his head before his collar gets rid of it, and he can't problem-solve when it feels like his heart aches more now than it ever has before.
He collects yarrow and lemon balm, enjoying the smell and seeming almost to meditate while he gathers herbs. Once he's done, he's looking about for someone to sit with. There is no visible injury on the young man, and whatever he's going through, he doesn't want to talk about it. He'd rather just get on with the meditative healing.
Even burning the herbs seems somewhat traumatic, and so he closes his eyes and takes a steady breath, wondering why and how he suddenly became so wary of flames. The first thing he will share is fear and pain, a sinking feeling starting from the fingers and winding up the muscle of arms and causing a slight bit of panic. Sorry for sharing, but at least no one has to listen to him talk about why an explosives expert is scared of fire, right?
II. Crystal Mushroom
Gokudera gets on the quest board regularly (it's how he makes most of his money, in fact). Some manual labor feels nice, and he enjoys getting his hands dirty, literally, if only to focus on something he feels he has control over. Cleaning is one thing.
Taking care of a drug-dealer's source is another.
But still, work he can do. Gokudera's out to find Wendy, and he's dressed the part of the mafioso he is. The teen's donned a suit and he's come with the intent to threaten with dynamite, or explain that Wendy might find herself with some bad luck. If anyone stops him on his way to find her, he'll be honest.
He's going to beat up some drug-dealer. That's all they need to know. Gonna take out some aggression. Want to supervise? Help him? Hold him back? Talk him out of it?
III. Don't Treep, Man
Gokudera can be found repairing fences, looking out for fairy nests in the farm land, and helping to clean up the orchards. He has no green magic, but it's moments like these that he wish he did. The boy's very eager to be close to real, live trees. Too many years trapped in worlds where everything was either a hologram, or irradiated has him grateful to sit on fertile soil while he takes a hammer to a fence. The sun might be beating down on him a little too hard, burning at his skin, and he may appreciate someone helping him out. The fairies in the area seem to be enjoying his company, though, and are a fun distraction.]
I don't suppose any of you have tips for staying cool?
[The faeries, of course, don't respond, but just keep on gathering blades of grass and taking them back to their nest. Gokudera offers one a nail, looks it over, and then gets up to go make a sort of laundry line by pushing two into the dirt by their nest, tying a string about them, and then leaving a few sweets.]
Don't let the ants get to them, now...
[Few people have seen how tender the boy is towards the fae, and despite what he's been through, he continues to offer gifts, smiles, and any help he can.]
IV. Animal Mage Hunt - Platina Faun
[It's been... an odd couple weeks, and now, for some reason, he's woken up without his normal lower half. Gokudera's not keen on leaving the house, but he has to attend classes, has to escort the Tenth to them. His current transformation is making going out in public especially difficult. He can't wear pants, because he can't fit them past his new set of legs, and his pet leopard keeps looking at him oddly, so he can't stay inside, either. Gokudera can be found napping by the training grounds, eager to spar with anyone who wants a new challenge, or he can be found moving about the forest, foraging for food and stones.
He's keeping to himself, but can also be found walking about the streets of New Camelot, just... trying to run errands as if his cloven footsteps weren't loudly announcing his new features. His bigger concern is whether or not he'll change back. If he does, hopefully it will be in the privacy of his own home, where being without pants is at least acceptable.
Oh well, at least the little stubby horns popping out through his silver hair are cute.]

The more smoke, the more companionship, the easier it is to breathe, to accept that he’s at fault for how he feels. It’s easier to be in control when no one else is to blame. He looks on at the smoke trailing off the herbs, and his hand gives a tentative squeeze in Hijikata’s grasp, almost as if in reassurance.
Now that the fear is ebbing, fading into acceptance, there is something else that is still unpleasant (aren’t all of his injuries that need to be addressed?), and it may just start as weight.
It’s loss, and a sense of betrayal.
Aurora had told him to not deny his feelings, so he’s just going to feel them. Still, ever shy, he drops his head to shadow his expression.
This sucks. He won’t ever say, but he feels a sort of reliance on Hijikata, a respect he doesn’t usually harbor. It’s embarrassing to be seen like this.]
no subject
In a way it's easier to communicate without speaking, because Hijikata often struggles to find the right words, or even just kind words. He lightly strokes Gokudera's hands with his thumbs without loosening his grasp, just for a moment, wanting to add a sense of comfort to the reassurance. It's good that Gokudera doesn't suppress his feelings; that'd only lead down a bad path. Hijikata would know.
The sense of loss is familiar... there's Mitsuba, who was so frail and died before her time, and of course Hijikata lost subordinates ever so often, but those were equally dedicated to the Shinsengumi's cause as him and fought until the end. Dealing with the losses on these strange in-between worlds is more confusing. While Hijikata didn't lose the same person 6 times over there's more than one cherished friend he first got to know on Prismatica, was reunited with on Avalon, and then separated from again. But that's the same for all of them, isn't it? Still, it doesn't get any easier.
The feeling of betrayal is one Hijikata is less familiar with. Back home the Shinsengumi was once betrayed by one of its own members, Itou, who managed to split off a faction and tried to kill Commander Kondou, but Hijikata never took that personally. He never liked Itou to begin with, so he frankly welcomed the justification to take him out. How was Gokudera betrayed? He doesn't prod, though, and simply lets him work his way through his feelings.
He can sense that Gokudera, in this moment, looks at him as a big brother, a guardian, a senpai, something along those lines, and he does his utmost to convey his readiness to accept that role. He, too, was once a teenage delinquent, and when Kondou entered his life it helped him so much. He's not as kind of a person as Kondou, but if he's good enough for Gokudera, then he'll do his best for him.]

It's his own fault for being hurt, he thinks. He shouldn't have let himself get so happy. Gokudera should have known that everything would balance out, and so a swing in the direction of his good fortune on another world made the crash back in Avalon that much worse.
But it's all just becoming a low level frustration the more he accepts that he can't change any of how he feels. It's just going to happen, and the point of this meditation is to heal. He won't if he stays hung up on every roadblock and gets in the way of his own happiness here.
Expression hidden, he's not looking at his companion so much as feeling that the weight on his shoulders is lifting. Hijikata is... accepting of his feelings, and this isn't any way of sharing that makes the teen feel as vulnerable. It's easier to just let it out, to acknowledge and move on. He takes a few more slow, deep breaths and his grip softens at the rub of the other man's thumb.
Then he's looking at Hijikata before moving to stand, to break that connection and walk away. He pulls out his cigarettes, taps the box against his palm, pulls one out and offers to the other before nodding his head to the side, inviting him to join him in a walk and a smoke. They can talk, if the other wants. Gokudera has questions of his own.]
no subject
When Gokudera breaks contact it signals the end of the meditation. Hijikata felt the boy's emotions get less and less intense, like a storm gradually calming down, and he takes that as a good sign, but he still easily accepts the unspoken offer to walk with him in the gardens. He now knows that Gokudera has his own fire magic, but he offers his little flame regardless. He'll let him speak first, wanting to give him a chance to order his thought a little beforehand if he needs to.]
no subject
Thanks.
[He walks on again and looks up.]
I...
[Gokudera doesn't want to trauma-dump on Hijikata without his consent, but... mentioning it cautiously and in simplest terms might be better. Safe. It seems to take him a great deal of courage to say this.]
I had powers in my world. Energy in my body that looked like flames, and my most integral. Storm flames... they're destructive. Unrelenting. It feels like I've always been good at... destroying things.
[His eyes are wet, his voice cracking.]
I was bitten by a zombie and my collar removed, and from the inside out. I used my flames. And now on this world... I have elemental magic.
It's... ironic. [He wipes his eyes, takes a long drag off his cigarette, and exhales.]
no subject
...
I've got several questions. First: were your powers back home natural? Is that something people in your world just develop? Or was it the ring that granted them to you?
[He remembers that goddamn ring Gokudera fought a life-or-death battle for, but he doesn't know what happened afterwards and if he actually attained in further down the line. All he knows is that in that battle he didn't see him using any fire attacks, "just" his smoke bombs and wires (which, frankly, were impressive enough).]
Second: the zombie thing happened on that crapsack world... Amoi, is that right? Why'd they remove your collar after that, 'cause you'd die anyway? Did you use your fire to end yourself while you were still human?
[This is a lot of seriously messed-up stuff, but Hijikata can handle it fine. He just wants to make sure he has the right understanding of what happened.]
no subject
I've been ten years into the future of my world and it is something most people possess. Sort of like chi? A life energy. It's called dying will... that sort of desperation that takes over as if it were the last thing you could do. The flames are given attributes similar to the same weather conditions our rings were named after. The ring channels the flames and it is possible to have dying will flames without ever knowing, seeing, or using them.
I would show you. I have my boss's ring here if you want to look at it.
[And he stops and detaches it from the chain on his collar that would usually be utilized for connecting a leash on a dog. Gokudera offers it to Hijikata to look at. If he puts it on, it will not offend the bomber. However, that might not be a great idea considering the world it came from. His boss is in Avalon and has his own ring still. So... which Sawada Tsunayoshi is missing a ring and why/i>?]
His channels Sky flames, which has a harmonizing attribute.
[Gokudera is a walking weapon. He's dangerous in the wrong hands, or under the wrong influences.]
Ah, and the zombies were in Anchor. Not Amoi. It was the most recent world I was on before Avalon.
[Idly wondering why all the worlds he's been on all share a common first letter.]
My owner was also in Anchor. He didn't know he was my owner, but that's the only person who can remove my collar. So, as a dying wish, I asked him to take it off and hold onto it. I used my fire to try and destroy myself... and the infection...
And I've never not been human, I think.
[Maybe he's been tagged and collared like an animal, but that doesn't mean he is one. Gokudera at least doesn't sound irritated. Before going to those worlds, the Gokudera that initially met Hijikata would not have shared any such information about his boss and their flames. That would be confidential. But... this world does not have a mafia family targeting him and his boss... that he knows of. Oddly enough, he trusts Hijikata.]
((ooc: If Hijikata puts on that ring, it will act just the same as Gokudera's collar.))
no subject
He inspects the offered ring, but doesn't try to put it on. It belongs to Gokudera's cherished boss, after all, and is a pretty important memento. Harmonising sky flames, huh... delinquents like Gokudera and him really always end up devoting themselves to kind leaders, it seems. He gives it back to him and listens as he continues.
God, all the messed-up worlds Gokudera ended up on are hard to keep track of. Honestly, he may just be the person who's been put through the worst bullshit out of everyone Hijikata knows. As Gokudera finishes he first clarifies what he thinks may have been a misunderstanding.]
I meant, before you'd turn into a zombie. Isn't it common for infected people to kill themselves while they still have their human mind and feelings? But, about your "owner"... he took off your collar, and you used your flames, and that's how you died? How come you still have the collar now, then? Were you brought here from before that happened? Then how do you have those memories?
[These multiverse trips are such a goddamn headache.]
no subject
Yes. But I didn't have anything to kill myself with. Even if I used dynamite, that likely would not destroy my brain. So... I realized my flames would destroy everything I was until there was nothing left. He took off my collar, I set myself on fire.
Apparently, there is something in that collar that drew me back? My owner was able to have it analyzed, and it carries a lot of memories. But when I came back to life, it was as if I had just re-loaded back in... like a video game character. My lungs still smoke from time to time. Not from this. [He nods his head towards his cigarette.] I'm not sure why.
[Gokudera is enjoying the peace of the gardens, and it allows him to talk without making him feel pressured.]
I know I was here, but I'm not sure at what time. It's sort of like... I gained memories I made here just as I was coming in. Like someone loaded another save file or something... Amoi was so strange, I wouldn't be surprised if I am just multiple versions of myself, and this current me you're talking to is an amalgamation of it all.
[It really freaks him out regularly to think about how he may not be real. To every person, he is a different version of himself. Does he even know who he truly is? What if he's just some clone or something? His stomach hurts with the effort to wrap his mind around it.]
no subject
...
I have a few theories, but ultimately we won't be able to be sure. In any case being bounced around time and space so much is bound to get more confusing the more overlap accrues. In my case I spent ten months on Prismatica, and when I returned to Earth I ended back up in the same moment I'd been taken from. So I got to live those same ten months again in my own world - and each time I visited Prismatica after that it went exactly the same way, no matter how long I stayed.
Spending pretty much two years in the course of one year was already confusing as hell, and your situation is so much more complicated. I've got to say, though, that on Prismatica dead people would also come back to life. They'd crystallise, slowly heal, and eventually revive. It was all down to how the life energy there worked. Each world affects those who enter it on a physical, even metaphysical, level, right? Who's to say Amoi didn't digitise all of you guys' minds and cram you into a simulation?
[He takes another long drag.]
But if that's really true, then Avalon must've made you "real" again. At least I'm pretty sure we're all flesh and blood here.
[Who can really say, though? At this rate he's going to think himself into a Matr*x rabbit hole...]
However, in the end, amalgamation or not, you're still you.
no subject
I had gone home for a time after my first stay here. So... at least a year and a half in Amoi, then nearly a year as well on Anchor, and finally, a few months here. I think it's been an average of around eighteen months in each world. Time at home just... stops, even when it feels like time passes here. It's complicated, yeah...
[Gokudera joins Hijikata in taking a long drag, and exhales slowly while listening.]
One version, but yeah. I'm sure there is some other Gokudera out there having a much easier time. [it would be foolish of him to assume otherwise, considering how many different versions of his family alone he's met.]
But he doesn't know you, or have magic. Hmm... do you think I could set myself on fire, or is that... y'know... trauma? [He's not heard of any mages setting themselves on fire in Avalon. Other people, yeah, but is internal self-combustion a problem for those with elemental magic and volatile personalities?]
no subject
I haven't heard of that happening. Honestly, I kind of blow a fuse pretty quickly if people are being stupid, and I've never set myself on fire, not even remotely.
[He tries to remember if he can recall any other potentially relevant incidents... oh!]
Way back when I'd just been here for a month or so I met Shoto-kun, another elemental mage, when he was walking around on fire by the lake. It didn't hurt him, though. Now I know that he already had fire magic back home, so maybe he had an easier time instinctively activating a resistance or something? You could talk to him about it if you want; he may be able to give you advice.
[Between Gokudera, Ken, Mukuro, and Shoto Hijikata somehow picked up a decent number of teenaged friends to be a questionable big brother to, and that's only counting those who weren't sent home and whom he spent time with more than just a couple of times... his misadventure buddy Zelgadis might still be a teenager too, come to think; he never asked.]
no subject
And if he ever gets his powers back or decides to practice with his fire magic, he doesn't want to be afraid. Carrying around enough dynamite to level even the largest nearby building is enough to warrant him being cautious, but... he likes explosions. It's the feeling of being consumed by fire he's scared of. It feels reasonable to be afraid.
But he hates that.]
Shoto? I may have to reach out...
[He doesn't think he's heard that name before, is a bit nervous about calling the other out with questions about powers that he no longer has. Then... there's always Zuko, who he knows well... who would probably be more than willing to help. But he always seems to being going through so much because of his sister. The boy gives a discouraged sigh at the thought.]
I need to get over it. What kind of explosives expert would I be if I can't even make a spark without [He waves a hand in front of his chest, trying to indicate a rapid heartbeat.] Freaking out?
no subject
Shoto's a good boy, very sincere... but you know best what type of person you can work with most effectively. If there are other fire mages you already know well they might be the best first address.
[He lets more cigarette smoke rise up, musing over what exactly might be a good starting point.]
Well, I'm one too, but I've got to say that I'm out of my depth here. My first thought is that if I were you I'd want to make sure I feel fully in control of my fire, so I'd probably focus on practical training. If you can't do that, and if you ultimately just want the fire gone, then remember that little plant we got at the spring equinox. When it bears fruit and you eat it there should be a fifty-fifty chance of which of your magic classes gets realigned.
no subject
I guess I won’t know until I meet him.
[He spent a long while letting his pride stop him from asking for help. It’s easier to ask the network. Most people don’t just immediately avoid him or feel fearful they’ve acted in the past. Probably because sincerity is easier on network and he can push people away verbally. With text, it’s more thought-out and less rash or abrasive.]
I’ve heard of people changing magic. I feel like maybe it was a day after that whole thing with the spring equinox that I fell into my..l sleep? The time-travel, world-jumping nap.
I don’t want to risk keeping the elemental magic and my light magic changes. I’m comfortable with it. [Likes how defensive, adaptable, and cautionary it is. He’s been offensive in order to keep himself distanced from others. It would only make sense that barrier and boundaries would be advantageous for him.]
That can be a last resort, so I’ll talk to this Shoto and train practically… thank you.
[Also for helping to heal.]
no subject
That aside he agrees with Gokudera's risk assessment of the plant idea. It would be a shame if he lost his light magic, given how well he uses it and how comfortable he is with it. Hijikata would certainly prefer to see him regain a similar comfort with his fire eventually, even if it may take a long time.]
If you want to try anything at all with your magic or just bounce more ideas off me, call or message me at any time. Also just for a smoke.
[He wants to say more, add some uplifting words or at least express that he's glad Gokudera made it back to Avalon to begin with, but he doesn't find the right worlds, so ultimately he just keeps standing by his side as they leisurely finish up their cigarettes.
no subject
Maybe he'll just stick to lighting his own cigarettes and candles, and creating small flames before he's making larger ones or trying to create fire-based attacks. There are also other elements he can stick to, but should not depend on any one more than another.]
You also have elemental magic, right? Which do you rely on the most? [Gokudera tried working with wind, and that was a bust.]
no subject
Fire.
[He's downright been using no other element for his first half-year on Avalon, simply because fire was the only one that came to him naturally. His familiar Arashi reasons that it's because it is the one magic type he already got to wield back on Prismatica thanks to his Sanguis moonblessing - though the one month he got exalted there he had control over wind instead, and that has indeed been the second-easiest element for him to get a grasp on here.]
no subject
Any other ones?
[Gokudera stops walking and turns to Hijikata, wearing something of a pout.]
Obviously not water... Or else Larry would like you more.
no subject
[Okay, also water, but details! They can focus on one after the other.]
If you want I'll practice those with you. It'd do us both some good.
no subject
Well... Electricity is pretty easy for me, but wind is... I think I'm too rigid about it. I know I shouldn't be, but I can definitely start it. Control it or guide it, though? Eh... not that well.
[Someone told him that his wind magic could be dangerous, but honestly, he's got his own reasons for avoiding fire. Not only just that he is perpetually covered in explosives...]
You would?
no subject
[He did promise Venti to bring him back some of the wind he can't control anymore... he smiles as he extinguishes his cigarette stub with a little bit of ice magic.]
Let's meet up at the training grounds or just outside the city one of these days. I'll message you, or vice versa.
[He'd set a date, but there's no telling what's going to happen around here on any given day, so they can just meet impromptu
offscreen or in either one's next catch-all posts!]no subject
[He looks surprised, touched, even. To have someone want to help him is one thing, but someone he's grown to respect like Hijikata means a lot! Gokudera gives him a soft bow.]
I'll look forward to it!
no subject
[Gokudera may be in a shoddy situation, but Hijikata fully believes that there'll be a mutual benefit in training and learning together. So it's not at all an offer made out of mere pity. He gives him a friendly nod in return before he gets going, wanting to ensure that everything is still in good order in the wing where King Arthur is resting.]
Keep your chin up until then.
