![]() It's a lovely winter's day. The rain is a light sprinkle, periodically the sun peeks out and forms a rainbow across the sky, and it's not even too cold to go out. The perfect kind of day. "Nothing could possibly go wrong!" is what someone said right before things started to go awry. All throughout the town, strange happenings began to occur... people began to experience odd effects, and though it was clearly magic, most of Camelot City's residents didn't seem to have an immediate understanding of what had happened. In fact, much of it seemed somewhat.. random. Characters will optionally be able to experience the following during this event (player's choice; characters may experience more than one):
• Uncontrollable super strength. Like go to open a door and it comes off the hinges or push someone and they fly through the wall level. • Being able to sense and feel the air around them. All of it, at all times. • Physically not being able to walk into any building without an invitation from the owner, including your own. • A part of your body grows in size. • Unable to be touched by anything, to the point that objects will move away from you as you try to pick them up. • Start seeing people you know from back home, but only you can see them. • Your technology falls in love with you and tries to keep you from looking at other pieces of technology. • You gain a canon magic! The only problem is, it was never yours to begin with. You gain someone else's magic/powers for the duration of the event. • You turn into whatever your zodiac sign is whenever someone touches you. • Emotions cause an immediate physical response regardless of strength; so if someone is even slightly sad, they'll start bawling. If anyone is happy, they're ecstatic and beaming. • Objects turn into your favorite thing when touched. ![]() To get to the Forest of the Fisherking, the safest path is the pass between the Land of Rot and the water. It's a dangerous journey. The Land of Rot itself has the stench of death about it, and in the distance, anyone traveling with the party will once in a while be able to see a lone member of the undead traversing what appears to be barren, dying lands-- be they a walking skeleton or a rotting corpse of a zombie. The skies above are filled with vulture-like creatures that pick the flesh off of those who wander in and don't wander back out. Anyone who tries to go toward it will be warned that it's a bad idea or stopped by someone else nearby, as though one alone may look like a single creature, they can call a horde at a moment's notice. The camp could be overrun within moments and none of them are equipped to fight the undead right now. The pass itself doesn't appear to have many creatures to fight along the way- most don't want to be near the Land of Rot longer than they have to, and it's dead silent at night, except for the periodic shrill scream from the Land of Rot in the distance. In fact, if you wake up past midnight at the camp, you'll find that even the camp itself seems to have all of the sound sucked out of it. When you try to speak, no sound comes out. There is a reason that this little stretch of land between the lake and the rot is called The Silent Shore by the water creatures and fae who live just offshore... though since they aren't the ones making the maps, it's not common knowledge in Camelot City. There's no way for anyone to have known ahead of time that everyone in the camp would be silenced. It's also why orc bandits attack the camp in the dead of night, as they know that no one will be able to let out a scream. Try to get to your friend's tents and alert others as soon as possible, get help, and stop the bandits from stealing all of your possessions or hurting someone... you know, without a peep. Good luck. ![]() Once the arduous journey through the Silent Shore is finished, the party arrives at the Forest of the Fisherking. It's quiet, but not in the same way the shore was silent. In fact, it's a rather serene location. The sunlight peeks through the leaves of the canopy, and small bugs and butterflies and pixies and other strange things dance through the air like they're under an enchantment of their own. Eventually, the party finds the home of the magical archivist. On the surface, it looks like almost an abandoned steam-powered traincar. There are gadgets and gears and clocks in the first room, little experiments here and there, and at the end of the car is an elevator. The elevator only fits two at a time, so you'll need to take turns going down. And down, down, down it goes. The elevator itself is a little rickety, so it may stop and stutter and you may be trapped in an elevator for any amount of time, alone in a small box with another person. When you get to the bottom floor, a pocket-sized steampunk-dressed gnome will appear on the elevator railing in a poof of smoke. "In order to pass my door, you must answer my questions three." The first question will always be your character's name. The second question will always be what your character seeks. The third question can be anything the player wants no matter how serious or ridiculous you'd like, but both characters will have to answer all three honestly, or the elevator will go back up to the top. Should they answer truthfully, the gnome will disappear in a puff of smoke and the elevator doors will open to reveal a dusty, underground library, filled to the brim with books and references. The archivist appears, pulling up a helmet of variable magnifying devices from over his head, and tells everyone to look around, but they're not allowed to take anything. Anything truly dangerous is locked up, but characters may be able to find information on magical creatures, tips and tricks for different types of magic, or different accounts of Arthurian legend, and more. King Arthur himself goes to speak with the man after this, so they can talk about what exactly is happening in Camelot City. When Arthur returns, he tells everyone the following information: Apparently, those fireflies people were wishing on at the bonfire normally gather their ability to grant wishes from the stars, which are currently frozen in time. As such, the power they drew upon to grant wishes went absolutely haywire and granted messed up versions of wishes for all kinds of people, including the people who didn't make them. They are wishes and not curses, which is why no one's counter-curses worked. Fortunately, the fix is rather simple, and upon returning home, anyone who stays out of the sunlight for at least 24 hours straight will return to normal. As the sun is the only functioning star and it's supporting the use of the fragmented star power the fireflies use, the magic of the wish will dissipate. As this is an unprecedented situation, no one knew this would happen. He asks that those here on this journey take to spreading word and ensuring it be done. |
Gnome More Problems - B
He can somewhat sympathise. He doesn't wish to isolate in the dark either. Not if it means losing this sight he's been granted again. He had thought it had been his own, but he had come to realise it is in fact his old friend's peerless talent. ]
You made those? [ He casts his eye over them. They're not real living things of course but they brim with the gleam of a magical construct. Of aether. ]
no subject
No. I think I summoned them from home, somehow. They're cute, right?
[The Mayorins look up at whoever is speaking. They... really are not very cute by most people's standards.]
no subject
What are they?
[ He watches the little...things. Scurry about. Or perhaps scurrying is not the right word. They're certainly toddling about at least. After a moment, he crouches to examine them better. ]
no subject
Mayorin! He's the mascot of Edo's premier mayonnaise brand.
[He whips out a mayonnaise bottle he oh-so-conveniently carried in his jacket and crouches as well to offer it (never mind that there's nothing to actually put the mayonnaise on). The mascots get all giddy and excited, with a few of them tugging on Emet-Selch's sleeves, trying to entice him into giving it a try. Their little chubby hands are generally all over him, and they're making sounds indicative of positive emotions without producing any actually understandable speech.
Hijikata may think he summoned them, but they're definitely aether creations.]
no subject
Unless I am mistaken - and I doubt I am - you created these. You did not summon them. Summoned entities have a different aetherial composition.
[ The mascots seem quite insistent he try some of this seasoning so he reluctantly takes the bottle and squeezes out a tiny dollop on to the tip of his finger to sample it. ]
no subject
A different composition? How so?
[He pats a Mayorin's mostly bald head while letting another one hold his hand (or just a finger, rather; they have really stubby hands).]
All I did was wish for him to be here... was that enough to manifest him out of thin air?
no subject
In my experience, it takes a great deal more than simply wishing it be so. But if you say that is how it happened then that is how it happened.
[ Can he...pick these things up? He offers a finger for one to grab on to, intending to hoist the little creature up so he can look at them closer to eye level. ]
Do you not usually possess the ability to create things?
no subject
I can't create anything. I'm just a normal person.
[For a given value of "normal", clearly... perhaps Emet-Selch can see more about the Mayorins than Hijikata can, but since Hijikata can currently see souls he already know that his creations don't possess any. He simply took that in stride. Maybe mascots are soulless by nature. What does he know?]
But... I wished for it a lot, if that makes a difference. You seem to know a good deal about these processes; is this commonplace where you're from?
phew sorry, been getting eaten by AssCreed lately
Emet-Selch sets the little thing back down again and looks to the other man. ]
It was, a long time ago. But no longer. I've no way of knowing if this power you suddenly have is the same, but if it is, I would caution against using it too often. 'Tis as wondrous as it is dangerous to be able to wish what you desire into reality.
No worries, that happens to the best of us!
[It also affected the hell out of Hijikata, but what's some long-lasting, crushing exhaustion compared to the joy of having a dozen Mayorins to cherish?]
If I use it prudently from here on out it should be okay, right?
[He doesn't have a clue yet that refusing to give up his new powers will mess with his magic before long, but he just really doesn't want to risk losing these little bundles of joy.]
I can make something for you too if you'd like me to, in return for explaining this to me.
[And definitely not as a favour in exchange for his silence on Hijikata stealth-keeping these over-the-top abilities or anything. Definitely not.]
no subject
The fact that it's also a bribe to keep quiet about the ability does not occur to him, sadly. Not that Emet-Selch is one for running his mouth about these sorts of things. The man isn't causing harm with his Mayorin army anyway. ]
...A corvid. Know you what those are? They have black feathers and are quite clever avians.
no subject
[To be fair, he hasn't tried catching a bird before, so chances are it's a good deal more difficult than he imagines, but still, it seems like a mundane wish. The Mayorins, meanwhile, are really just moving in a tiny radius around them like NPCs, and Hijikata occasionally sets one down and picks another one up, depending on what they are indicating with their body language.]
no subject
...Yes, I am sure.
[ It would make Hythlodaeus smile and that is enough. ]
no subject
CRAU'dsent to another world along with people he cares about but who don't remember him has been one hell of a jarring experience.]Okay. Which kind do you want?
[He's already starting to focus on the idea of a corvid, imagining it and wishing for it to manifest here as vividly as he can, subconsciously manipulating the aether his new powers granted him access to. Right now it's a vague mix of the different types in his imagination, so if Emet-Selch has no preference he may end up with a bit of a hybrid.]
no subject
[ He knows better than anyone else that the image must be clear in one's mind as one brings a concept to life. Distractions can alter the creations of even a practised adult, and this young man can only lay credit to a little crowd of 'Mayorins'. ]
If your familiar complains, I would be glad to take the blame, [ he adds with a slight smile. ]
[ Crossing his arms, he falls silent to let Hijikata work. He's curious to see how well (or not well) the bird turns out. He's sure his friend will find it amusing no matter what. ]
Feel free to customise the bird in any way!
[Oh so he hopes. The crow tengu is so elusive, especially compared to other people's more affectionate familiars, that he doesn't really know him all that well.
He does need to make an effort to focus on manifesting the crow for Emet-Selch, closing his eyes and frowning slightly in concentration. He's seen so many in his life, he knows exactly what they look like... and yet it's not as easy as manifesting all those Mayorins, if only because he's overly invested in the odd little creature and had strong feelings for it from the get-go.
He tries to summon his memories of winter in Edo, when the crows accompany him and his men overhead during their patrols and line the rooftops around the crime scenes they investigate, and of the winters in the countryside of his youth, where he sometimes fought over scraps of food with them (he got better, clearly). He opens his hands in front of him, trying to shift his focus to wanting to make one appear on his joined palms... and something is happening alright. One he feels the soft warmth of a bird body he slowly opens his eyes.]
I think it came out okay.
[As far as he can tell it's the right size, it's black, is has the usual amount of limbs... so far, so good. If there's anything odd about it they can only hope to find out before Emet-Selch takes it home, because Hijikata won't take it back (okay, maybe he would, but he already has his hands full with his mascots).]
o7
...I must say, I am impressed. Thank you.
[ He bows slightly, cradling the bird in his arms. The crow cheekily pinches his hand with its beak but he barely flinches. ]
I imagine this will disappear together with your Mayorins once you cure yourself. But I am sure that this will entertain my friend for the brief time that it exists.
[ Hijikata gets one of Emet-Selch's super-ultra-rare smiles. An extremely faint one but it is there. ]
no subject
Oh, it's for your friend? It won't disappear any time soon if I can help it.
[The crow sticking around would give that away anyway, so he may as well make his intentions clear. He picks up another Mayorin that tugs on his trouser leg.]
What's your name, say? I'm Hijikata.
no subject
[ He would not mind if the crow lingered longer than expected but he knows the consequences of refusing to do so. For their sake, he hopes they take their familiar's advice. ]
'Twas a pleasure to speak with you. I'll leave you to your...other creations. Good luck.
[ One final glance down at the nude mascots, face carefully neutral, before he nods again at Hijikata and then continues on his way. The crow will be well taken care of, even spoiled for the remainder of its brief life. Yet the longer it remains, the more concern he will harbour for its creator. ]
no subject
[Hijikata made his decision, despite all signs pointing towards it being the wrong one. He works hard every day and deals with messy, ugly business (moreso back home than here on Avalon, but even so), doesn't he deserve to keep his
comfort characterfavourite entity for company? They don't bother anyone, and they're so cute!As Emet-Selch heads off with his new crow he leads the way for the Mayorins to let them frolic around some more, with the locals not batting much of an eye. Stranger things have happened in Camelot.]
