Hijikata won't admit it, but between his collection of mayonnaise paraphernalia and shoujo manga merchandise (the latter stemming from his unfortunate otaku phase) he really is a nerd too, and having yet another hard-working person to carry out quests and other tasks with would be nice. For the time being, though, he can only somewhat stand in for him and keep half an eye on Crow.]
