[ 1. Snow Laughing Matter ]

[ When Ryouma hears banging at the door, he half-expects it to be a panicked client. When he finds a snowman there instead, he's the one that panics. Ryouma is quick to squeeze himself out the door and gently shoos it away. ]

I think you're confused. You must have somewhere else you're supposed to be, right?

[ And that's when he sees a small army of snowmen following along behind this one. He has to herd them where they need to go, right? This is what he'd read about, wasn't it? Well, may as well get to it. He starts to herd them in ... some direction, eventually ending up on a main thoroughfare in Camelot. He's in over his head, surrounded by snowmen. ]

Hey, you there, do you mind helping me out? Please?

[ 2. Slightly Shabby (Kids) ]

[ Ryouma has tasked himself with playing with displaced children. The current environment isn't great, what with the wrecked cityscape and the looming disaster in the sky. Kids don't need to see that right now, so what better time to play with them? Ryouma has a few small animals around him, mostly squirrels with a few birds in the mix. ]

If you know how, you can talk to them! They're just like us and have all their own wants and needs, so you have to find out how you can work with them individually.

[ A squirrel runs up his arm and steals his hat before running off, much to the delight of the kids around him. Ryouma is not as amused, but the squirrel is too fast. ]

Can someone catch that squirrel please? Or help me reason with him?

[ 3. Slightly Shabby (pokeball) ]

[ A comfy place to nap with good dreams? Ryouma needs that right now, so of course he's going to make use of the Wink-Wonk Dream-Donk. The problem comes in the fact that well, he can't get out. It's probably fine.

Whoever finds his ~~pokeball~~ Wink-Wonk Dream-Donk and frees him from it will find a grateful, if confused Ryouma. At least he feels well-rested after being trapped in there for who knows how long. Hopefully he didn't miss anything important... ]

Ah, thank you...How can I repay you for your kindness?

[ Concerning that's his first instinct. ]

[ Someone didn't heed the warning about not eating the Ouefs de fleurs. They were eggs, what's the worst that could happen? Apparently the worst is flowers coming out of his mouth. How the hell is he supposed to deal with this?? Izō can't find out about this or he'll never hear the end of it...

It's then he hears the door open.

So much for that. ]

Izō! [ Ryouma keeps a hand over his mouth. ] I didn't think you'd be home so soon.

[ izō pauses in the doorway to consider this for a sec. ryouma with his hand over his mouth — which is already weird — and then that's totally a thing someone only says when they've just been caught. ~~who is the detective now.~~ ]

What'd ya do?

[ squint. ]

Nothin'! I'm alright! [ Nevermind Izō didn't ask that and Ryouma doesn't lower his hand. ] I jus' thought ya were gonna be out longer, 's all.

[ And maybe he could have found a less embarrassing way to fix this problem. ]

[ he squints more. ]

Yer a terrible liar.

[ he heads over and grabs ryouma by the wrist, intending to pull his hand back to see what he's hiding. ]

Last chance t' explain yer self.

[ Good thing Ryouma has two hands! Izō succeeds in pulling one hand away, but his other one covers his mouth right up. ]

It's nothin', really!

[ izō sighs, needing a moment or two just to handle this. it's sort of cute despite his best efforts to find it irritating. it's been a little awkward since the ritual business, so if this were only some attempt at trying to get izō to relax into a little affection, it's almost working. ]

Gonna really keep lyin' t' my face?

[ but izō also has two hands, so he uses his free hand to pull ryouma's aside too. no warning this time, he'd had his chance! ]

[ Well, nothing to hide now. There are flowers (Chinese bellflowers, to be exact) growing out of his mouth and Ryouma looks particularly ashamed about this fact. ]

...You know those eggs that showed up?

[ izō isn't sure what to make of this. his expression probably says everything he's not saying. ]

... Yeah?

[ he has no idea where this is going but he's along for the ride. ]

[ Ryouma looks like he wants to die. ]

You know how it said "do not eat" on the package?

[ izō is so invested now he's thinking less than usual. ]

... Yeah?

[ Don't make him just say it!! Ryouma sighs, his shoulders slumped and his head hanging in shame. ]

...I ate one.

[ ... ]

[ he starts out sounding like he might sneeze, then snorts a few times before outright bursting out laughing.

of course ryouma ate one. ]

[ Not what he needed right now!! He already felt ridiculous enough...but it is nice to hear Izō laugh, even if it's at the expense of his dignity. ]

I was curious! An'...Now I dunno how t' fix this. I was lookin' into it before ya came home.

[ it takes him a little bit to come down from that and he wipes his eyes with his sleeve. ]

That answers m' next question...

[ he trails off because he starts looking hard at the flowers. sometimes plants give him a weird feeling and this is one of those times. he wonders what happens if he touches one — since this is probably more magic bullshit — and then goes right ahead and tries it, giving one of the stems a curious little tug. ]

[ The little flower is rooted firmly in Ryouma's mouth. He winces and gently swats Izō's hand away. All he needs is pain to go with his shame. ]

Ahh! That's attached, don't pull on it! I dunno how deep th' roots go...

... Pretty fuckin' weird, I gotta say. So what're y' lookin' at for fixin' it?

[ it seems more comical than concerning, so he's not worried at the moment and continues to be amused by it a little. ]

[ Ryouma is good at covering up the fact that it feels like he's choking on flowers right now. His chest hurts and the pain ebbs and flows with a rhythm he doesn't understand. Sometimes it's not so bad, other times it's overwhelming. More flowers fall out of his mouth when it hurts more and sometimes there's almost nothing there.

It's been a difficult few hours.

He coughs with a grimace and shrugs. ]

Best I can find is I need a green mage t' fix it...But I ain't real keen on goin' to one right now.

[ izō frowns a little because the novelty wears off soon enough and then he just feels bad. at least an idea comes to mind quickly for once, mostly because it's exactly what he would do. ]

Ain't stoppin' ya from usin' yer own magic though, right? Turn in t'somethin' else an' no one'll know who it is.

I...hadn't thought of that.

[ Mostly because he'd been so preoccupied with what was going on in the moment that planning for how to deal with it was beyond him at the moment. ]

Things're goin' wrong with magic right now, though, ain't that right?

[ izō makes a face because yeah. more than a few backfires already in his case. ]

Somethin' like that. So what? Ya ain't hexin' people, ya jus' might turn in t' somethin' ya ain't expectin' to. So y' might wanna do it outside yer first time tryin'.

[ Izō has a point, but a thought occurs to Ryouma suddenly. ]

...What if their magic goes wrong tryin' to fix it?

Ah...

[ that is a thought. well. he considers this for a few moments. ]

Well... what's it gonna do? Make it grow faster? Y' try cuttin' it already?

No, just tried pulling on it...I can feel it in my chest. I dunno how big this thing is.

[ He grimaces. ]

Dunno what'd happen if it got any bigger.

[Hijikata is always behind these days, but it's not necessarily for the worse. When he wakes up in the evenings and checks AOL he can easily catch up with the day's events and brace for whatever is going on. So tonight, too, news of people being trapped in the little devices had already made the rounds on AOL when he got ready for his patrol. He just didn't expect Rider to be the one to pop out when he pressed the button.]

Don't mention it. How'd you end up in this thing? Don't tell me you've got no place to stay anymore.

No, no, nothing like that! I just...let my curiosity get the better of me.

[ The idea of a nice, nightmare-free nap after what he'd been through recently was too good of an opportunity to pass up. ]

And are you sure I can't do anything for you?

[Hijikata did not hear of the "nightmare-free" part. That would explain a lot, really. Camelot and its people have been put through the wringer rather thoroughly. As it is he just lets out a light snort at Rider's dangerous curiosity.]

Hm... well, if you insist you can treat me to dinner.

[He really doesn't need the charity, being a salaried knight, but if Rider absolutely wants to return some kind of favour..!]

Just a small one from one of the food stands in the lowertown. I'm on the clock, no time to sit down somewhere for long.

Of course, of course, if that's what you want!

[ Ryouma isn't entirely sure why he's so eager to please at this moment and doesn't want to think too much about it. ]

Have you been helping others out who got stuck in those things or am I a special case?

[ He's teasing, really. ]

You're the only one I found so far. I imagine that most people probably used these things indoors, so they'll have to be discovered by their or friends or neighbours.

[He says that casually, not too concerned. As far a Avalonian disasters go this one isn't too bad.]

How's your work? Our paths haven't crossed in the line of duty yet, so either there haven't been any crimes that would draw the knights' involvement, or it's been quiet overall.

[He's a little curious. He generally focuses on dark web crimes and monster-slaying quests rather than all the dramatic tales of betrayal and vengeance that unfold in hidden places.]

Probably a better idea to use them inside...I got too curious to wait.

[ He's tricked so many people into thinking he's careful and competent. Surely someday everyone will realize he's just flying by the seat of his pants and hoping for the best. ]

It's been quiet. Nothing really interesting, just lost pets and trying to find out who cursed who. [ He shrugs. ] Nothing knights should need to concern themselves with.

Really? And you're content with that?

[He does have the impression that this detective is a careful and methodical person! Also the curse part isn't entirely uninteresting.]

You wouldn't know who exactly was responsible for the werewolf curse, then? Or who revived the goddamn Fisher King? I heard rumours, but... I'm sure you have additional sources.

[When did this snack stand dinner turn into covert information brokerage?]

[ Ryouma puts his hands up and laughs. ]

Oh no, I'm afraid the curses I've dealt with are much more petty. Nothing nearly that important. Both of those are ... important to me, so I'd let you know if I knew anything.

[ Because Izō is affected by one and was duped into the other. Problems that have been bugging him for awhile now. ]

[Hijikata wouldn't hold the werewolf thing against anybody, all the less since he's affected himself and decided to leverage the monthly nigh-invulnerability for raids and battles instead of getting rid of the curse, but Izō's involvement in the Fisher King's necromancy would make him question Ryouma if he had connected the dots - the dots being the information divulged in Claude's online inquiry on the matter, Izō's identification as AOL user 'manslayer', and Ryouma's connection with him that can easily be gleaned from their feature page in the Wizards Gone Wild calendar.

But luckily he's not a detective, and back home he has his spies for this sort of thing, and right now he's content just looking for Wink-Wonk Dream-Donks on patrol. Besides they're approaching the fish'n'chips stand he was leading the way to. He's pretty hungry, so he loses no time stepping up to it and ordering.]

I'll have a standard potion.

[As soon as it's handed to him he drowns it in the obligatory mayonnaise.]

You should get yourself something too. Are you starting your shift? Or were you already done for the day?

[Do detectives work during the day or at night? It depends, right?]

[ It's one thing to be aware of Hijikata's love of mayonnaise, it's another to see it directly in front of his eyes. Ryouma can only stare in ~~abject horror~~ fascination for a moment before Hijikata's question even registers. ]

Ah, no, I'm not hungry right now. [ Blame mayonnaise mountain for that. ] I'm...kind of in the middle of things. My work hours aren't exactly regular, to say the least.

[ The detective agency doesn't keep regular hours because Ryouma doesn't keep regular hours. It's a miracle when he's up before noon and asleep before the sun rises. ]

[For what it's worth, Hijikata is really enjoying it... he needs a moment to chew and swallow before he can respond.]

Oh! Then don't let me keep you. But don't trap yourself in that thing again, okay? If anything maybe you can use it to capture criminals.

[Is that legal?! But honestly, it's probably a nicer method than most...]

I don't know if it works that way. They'd have to be curious enough to push it themselves, I think, and if they're that curious, they'd be easier to catch in a more conventional way.

[ Read: he's being polite about calling those types of criminals stupid. ]

But thank you again for getting me out of that situation. If you need a relax sleep, I recommend trying one out...but maybe with a friend around.

[He huffs - figures that they can't just go around capturing criminals in those things; that would've been too easy. Ryouma's following suggestion makes him crack a tiny grin.]

I think I'll pass. You can trust barely anyone around here.

[He says that, but he wouldn't be opposed to going on another quest or expedition with Ryouma one of these days. His calm personality makes it so easy for Hijikata to not lose his temper, and not having to be the brawn and the brain all the time is a nice relief!]

Well, I guess I should get going too...

[He picks up his horrifyingly eggy, fatty meal, apparently intent of eating the rest on his patrol route.]

Of course. It's the least I could do. [ He smiles. ] Don't be a stranger, alright? Call on me if you ever need to!

[ At least Hijikata's going to be finishing off that monstrosity away from him. ]
