Speed Dating & Friendshipping

WHAT'S UP?

Speed Dating & Frienshipping is a (player-run) Valentine's Event hosted by Ren Jinguji and Camus at Shining Karaoke, located in Camelot.

During both of these events, participants talk to all other participants. Everyone is given five minutes to ask questions before they bell rings and you move onto the next person.

The tables all have cards that include simple questions if someone is stuck on what to ask. Here are some examples of what kind of questions there might be. Of course Speed Frienshipping won't have any "shippy" questions or ones that could be implied as such.

Everyone is free to make Top Levels for their characters for before and after the events themselves for mingling, singing karaoke or anything! World's your oyster and so on.

[ Oh! This girl seems interesting, hopefully, she can strike up a good conversation with her.]

Which do you think is better, a good listener or a good speaker?

A good speaker can pretend to be a good listener, but a good listener may not be a good speaker at all.

[ Of course, some people were both... But that was the exception. rather than the rule. ]

Honestly, I would rather people listen in earnest... Sometimes you don't need words to communicate feelings and ideas, you know? Actions speak louder than words. And even if you use words, you can use them to communicate in ways that don't involve speaking. Like writing. [She laughed.] Ahaha! Sorry, I went a bit overboard with that answer, mhm? Well...

[ Her turn to ask a question, right? ]

Have you had any encounters with bad listeners or speakers?

[ Chrome isn't expecting to get such a complex answer, but nothing Monika says is wrong. She nods her head as she listens to her take, she agrees with a lot of it. She smiles softly as the other girl believes she went overboard.]

No, it's okay. You sound very philosophical.

[It reminds her of someone she knows, so it's not a bad thing.]

...I have. Though I feel people who are bad at listening just aren't receptive to another point of view. And I've seen people who are less articulate do amazing things, so I agree action speaks louder than words and their words aren't a judgment of what type of person they are. Actually, I think people who are better at words can sometimes be tricky.

I totally agree. [She nodded and smiled.] Back home, I was president of a Literature Club... None of us were very good at expressing ourselves with words. I was the best at it but even then, I'd call myself average if anything, ahaha! [A pause.] Yet, because we were listening to each other, we managed to build a really cozy and friendly place.

[ Monika looked down and remained silent a moment. Thinking about them, it was nostalgic yet... So sad. Of course, all of that had been before her epiphany... After, ell, she didn't want to think about it.

She looked back up and managed to force a smile. ]

Sorry, I was reminiscing a bit... [She closed an eye.] What is your name? You don't sound bad with words at all, nor do you appear to be a bad listener, ahaha!

[ A literature club sounds like fun. She doesn't read a lot, but with so much downtime and attending school, she might pick up a book or two now. She nods enthusiastically as she listens to Monika, it sounds like this club was a very safe and welcoming place for her.

Chrome becomes a bit flustered at the compliment and realizes she never introduced herself.]

Oh! My name is Chrome, Chrome Dokuro. And sometimes it can be hard to convey what's on my mind, but sometimes...it's not. And I guess...

[ She nervously tucks some hair behind her ear as she looks down.]

...all I've ever done is listen to people. I didn't think anything I had to say really mattered. It's not like my words could change the situations I've been in. But after a while, you become tired of sitting on the sidelines, listening to others, and eventually, you must take action.

I'm Monika. Just Monika. [ She blames her creator for never bothering to give her a last name...] It's a pleasure meeting you!

[ She beamed at Chrome, listening to the rest of what she had to say. Mhm... Doing nothing but listen and never speak for yourself... Yes, that was what Sayori did, wasn't it? When Sayori spoke, it was always for the sake of others, after having listened to them. Unless pressed, she never spoke of herself. She never had anyone listen to her...

And the results, well... ]

It's a brave thing to do. [She looked down and smiled.] You should be proud. A lot of people... Are afraid people won't care for what they have to say. Are afraid they will be nothing but an annoyance. Being able to stand for yourself takes a lot of courage.

It does, but...I'm not always able to do it.

[ All the things Monika says are the very things she has experienced herself. She's been afraid of what people might say or being an annoyance or being ignored. All of those things have happened to her, and yet, she can stand her ground somehow.

Though Chrome doesn't want to revisit those feelings, those are mostly in her past. This is supposed to be a positive event, so Chrome will go on to the next question.]

What color best describes your personality?

[ Monika can tell the other girl wants to change topic, so she doesn't insist. She just nods and then tilts her head at the question. ]

If you had asked me before my arrival in Avalon, I'd have said emerald green... [A pause.] I was trying really hard to stand out and be more "unique" back then, ahaha. But now that I'm more comfortable, I think pink is more, well, "me."

It's such a boring answer... But I really like that color and I feel it defines me best. Romance, femininity, positivity, creativity-- [Lack of self-esteem, lack of assertiveness... But she wasn't going to mention these.] What about you? Any colors you feel are the most "Chrome-like?"

Emerald green is a nice color.

[She nods, even though Monika says she doesn't really associate herself with it. Though pink is a cute color.]

Before...I think I liked several different colors for different reasons. Black, Indigo, purple...but now I like softer colors like pink, white, and lavender.

[ Her mental state and sense of self are a lot better now. She's allowing herself to like the things she does versus feeling she had to fit a certain aesthetic. Although she does still like the darker motifs too.

Chrome selects another question.]

What was the most adventurous thing you've ever done?

That's a lot of colors, ahaha...!

[ She'd named most of the rainbow. But the inability to set yourself on one color in particular was saying a lot in itself. That and how lighter her new set of favorite colors was compared to her old one. ]

I'm afraid I'm not really the adventurous kind. [A pause.] I was a high school student before being taken to Avalon. My life was pretty boring...

[ Asides from, you know, being a sentient video game character who killed all of her friends in a bid to reach the player and find love. But those days were behind her... And honestly she wouldn't qualify any of what had happened as adventurous. "Sad" and "horrifying" if anything. ]

Do you think of yourself as someone adventurous?

[ Chrome blushes as Monika points out that she choose a lot of colors. Well, Chrome couldn't just decide on just one so...she choose a lot.

Though she can relate to leading an almost mundane life herself. She was a junior high school student, but if you ignore the fact that she's in a gang of delinquents and ex-convicts and also one of the seven guardians of a budding mafia boss, she's completely normal.

Still, she meditates on the question.]

I wouldn't say adventurous...my mother often said I was a reckless girl, but I don't think that's true either. I'm just a person who's easily led by her heart, and that can put me in both good and bad situations.

I can relate to being led by your heart. Parents will think their child is reckless for absolutely anything, ahaha! [She raised a finger.] Mines were...

[ She marked a pause. It was very noticeable that for a moment, Monika's smile dropped and her eyes dimmed. Her parents had never existed. They weren't real, everything she remembered was just the backstory her creator had made for her. At best, their existence was that of simple NPCs who didn't even have their own character files. If anyone was to truly be called parents, that was her creator. And how little she knew about him...

Her smile returned nigh immediately, as if nothing had happened. But it was a forced smile. ]

Um... I guess I inherited my perfectionism from them, ahaha!

[Chrome notices the pause and how her smile falters. It seems like a difficult topic for Monika, or there's more to it than she says. However, Chrome isn't the type to pry, and since this is their first interaction, she doesn't feel right asking either.

Instead, she decides to ask a follow-up question to what she said earlier.]

Perfectionism can be good sometimes. Though, you said you could relate to being led by the heart. What's one situation that you took that approach?

[ Goodness... There was an obvious answer to that question. But she was going to go for a more recent example. One that didn't feel her with guilt and shame. ]

Mhm, well. There was that time when I had a crush on a girl. But I'd been recently heartbroken... So of course, I knew it would be wrong to act on those feelings. Logically, waiting and seeing how my feelings evolve and until I find myself in a stabler situation would have been the right choice. But I didn't wait, not for long anyway. I approached the girl and told her everything.

[ She closed her eyes, taking a dramatic pause... Before opening one eye with a smile. ]

Today she's my girlfriend and we're happier than we've ever been~!

[ Sometimes, stories had good ending-- Even when you listened to your heart and discarded reason. ]

We've asked each other a lot of questions already, heh? [She extended a hand towards Chrome.] Do you think we can consider that befriending session a success?

[Archer just takes one of the notes on the table and reads that out loud because coming up with questions on his own is a no go.]

What colour best describes your personality?

[What kind of a question is that.]

Describe, huh...?

[ If it had been about her favorite color, the choice would have been easy... It was ~~pink~~ emerald green, obviously. But color that describes her as a person... Well, that was her "hidden" favorite color, obviously. ]

Pink, I'd say. I like to think the concepts and ideas associated to this color are those I embody the most. [Love, femininity, calm, creativity, compassion. Green was... Well, it no longer was who she wanted to be. No matter! It was her turn to ask a question, right?] Um... What is your favorite color and why?

[Hmm... Archer could see her as "pink". She has the right kind of energy for that, at least.]

Red. It's a color that brings me comfort as it's closely associated to one of the people I care about the most in any of the worlds. I do... also like the color blue for that reason.

[... yeah, he's kind of sappy.]

If your friends compared you to an animal, which animal would it be?

That's a nice reason to like a color. [A pause.] It makes my answer feel selfish in comparison, ahaha!

[ Even though the question hadn't been exactly the same... ]

An animal, huh...? [Gosh... If she asked the other girls, after everything she'd done? They'd probably say "a snake." But she didn't want to be that person any more. So what else best described her now? What would people say?] A cat maybe?

[ There was whatsoever no conviction in her voice, nope. ]

Um... Are you in love with someone?

[That certainly wasn't a very convincing answer... but Archer's not the type to ask for clarification or push the issue. Just that simple answer was fine.]

I am.

[A simple answer. He doesn't need to clarify it further, does he?]

What is your dream job?

[ Oho, love was in the air! Thankfully since they didn't really know each other, she didn't push for more details. ]

That's easy: a librarian or writer! [She didn't have to think much about it, seeing how she was in the process of picking between one of the two already.] Stuff related to literature in general. And well, technically I can be both, ahaha!

Do you have a job, or are you still going to school?

Here I own a restaurant with someone. Fortune Panda, if you've heard of it.

[We don't talk about what he does back home.]

Are you reading or writing any books right now?

[Mamoru knew he'd end up meeting her eventually. Might as well use this as an opportunity to chat casual.]

So, found any new friends yet?

Ahaha, I have talked to a few interesting people, yes!

[ She raised a finger. ]

And spoke with a few old friends, too! How about you? Any new friendships?

Same with speaking with a few old friends.

[Still, there were a lot more people than he has friends! So not all are familiar.]

I think so. At least there's a lot of potential.
