Sure, sure. [As he gets a better look at Bruno in the chaos, Rei is surprised to find the man... about his age, thereabouts? (Well, in appearances; there are so many thousand-year-olds walking around this damn island, it's hard to tell.) How novel! Guess he'll keep him. Rei's teammates are always on his case about making friends his own age, anyway.

Any further one-sided decisions are halted by the sight of the monster sending a man flying with the flat of one of its blades. Yikes! Okay, focusing. Rei hefts the shield, and his familiar launches herself off of his shoulder and into the air above.]

I can exhaust the thing, but the spell takes a bit. You got any way to buy time?

Ah... uhm... [flounder, flounder, flounder--ah-hah! He remembers he has magic that's actually useful for the situation at hand.

He hopes.

As the others charge forward he forms a ball of light and throws it. It flies past the monster, and so does the next, but the ones after it actually strike it, the hard light dispersing. Heh, this is kinda fun!]

Take that! And that! And this!

[Rei watches with some interest as the shimmering spheres burst on contact, eyebrows raised. His familiar flies around to the back of the creature in the meantime, looking for the best place to land upon it and sink her ward's spell into.]

Oh, light magic? Not sure what you needed a human shield for, then. [har har.

The monster lets out an annoyed roar at the distraction, turning in their direction. They're out of range of its swords, sure-- but it raises its rice cannon thing(???!!??), aiming right at them.]

Ah, shit. [He might have joked about the light magic shield abilities, but Rei still grabs Bruno and ducks the both of them behind his wooden one, grimacing. The rice bullets thud furiously against it.] Who the hell turns their meal into a gun!

I haven't learnt how to do that, yet... [He's taken to creating hard light easily enough, but he's still getting the hang of maintaining it.] It's on my list to--YEEK!

[He breaks off with a yelp as he's grabbed. Awgawd, there's rice everywhere. Sticky rice. Sticky rice that clings to his boots.]

Right? There's food fights and then there's this....

[He peeks round the shield, then forms a bigger light ball and chucks it. It bounces off the monster's head with an absurd splat!]
