[closed] running from me
🧙 WHO: Okada Izō & Jane Porter
⚔️️ WHAT: Someone's a sad doggo in the woods
🕒 WHEN: A few days after the Wolf's Moon event
🗺️ WHERE: The woods outside of Camelot
⚠️ WARNINGS: None for now!
[ in the days since izō last left the sakamoto detective agency, he's had the issue of his uncontrollable transformations happen twice. he had intended to return in the morning after the first time — as he'd promised — but he'd lost his nerve on the way back.
he's been living out in these woods ever since, but without clothing or proper shelter against the weather at this time of year, izō has been forced to spend all this time in his dog form. it's warm enough getting by with fur, especially once he gets out of the wind, izō supposes. food is a little harder to come by, but at least he doesn't need much at his size.
izō transformed twice but also has had several days since where he didn't change — waking up in the same shape as he fell asleep — but that doesn't mean it won't happen again! he's just being careful.
...and apparently it snowed overnight more than usual, meaning more than izō anticipated in choosing where he'd spent the night. the space under the long dead roots of a large tree made for a decent spot ordinarily, but he woke up this morning realising he'd gotten snowed in.
right now, izō has just about finished digging himself out of his situation. he's been at it for a while, having had to keep snow from caving in and ruining his progress, but finally figured it out. he's trying to hurry, seeing as he's a small black animal exposed on a white backdrop of snow — bad news if anything wants to eat him. unfortunately, he's also not used to doing things this way, so when he's finally free of the snow tunnel he climbed out of, izō simply flops over where he ends up to rest and recover. ]
Fuckin' snow. I win.
[ it's fine. give him a minute. ]

crunch crunch crunch
She's looking for something - a kind of ice pixie that she read about in a book - though somewhere to sit down and sketch for a minute would be fine too. Jane almost begins humming to herself to break up the silence when she hears a voice.
A familiar, grumpy voice.
It hadn't been so long since the party and she hadn't thought to check in on Ryouma and Izō since save to ask if they were both doing all right in the aftermath. She certainly doesn't expect to find Izō out here.]
Hello?
[Her own voice startles her as she steps off the trail she's been following and moves towards the voice. As much as she didn't think she'd find the man out here she definitely did not expect to find him... like this.
The surprise is very clear on her face when she steps around the tree and lays eyes on the little dog lying in the snow.]
Um--... [Is that..?] ... Izō, is that... you?
no subject
izō looks like he intended to run, but before he can manage it... there she is. how did jane sneak up like that?? he must be slipping. then again, these are unusual circumstances... ]
Yeah, yeah. Go on, laugh it up when I can't do nothin' about it.
no subject
Now, why would I do that?
[Because he hates being laughed at - she knows he hates being laughed at - so despite the terrible need she has to do just that, she manages to avoid it.]
You must be freezing. What are you doing out here like this?
no subject
Ain't that bad. Kinda used to it now.
[ he didn't think ahead to whether or not he might run into anyone, so he didn't exactly plan for a story to tell. ]
Got no choice though, on account of not bein' dressed for the weather.
[ which is one nice way of putting it. ]

Does Ryouma know you're out here?
[No need to call him 'Rider' when it comes to Izo. It isn't as if the man isn't going to know Ryouma's real name.
She braces her forearm against her knees as she balances in a crouch, and against what probably should be her better judgement she reaches her other hand out and gives his cold head a gentle pat.]
no subject
Yeah. I mean... sorta? He knows I'm out. So? Ain't like he's my keeper or somethin'!
[ the thing about his animal magic is that he can't entirely turn off his instincts and inclinations — which is why he gets unintentional wagging tails, or in this case, finds himself leaning a little unconsciously into her touch. after everything he's been through lately, the tiny bit of comfort is welcome whether or not he can actually acknowledge as much. ]
Can't go back anyway. I'm jus' doin' 'im a favour.
no subject
A favour? That's really what you think you're doing?
[His irritation doesn't bother her. Izō's irritation has never really bothered her, not even from the first moment they met. He would be hard-pressed to even really startle her anymore, unless he was genuinely trying to scare her.]
Why can't you go back?
no subject
[ he can't be mad at that particular question when he's not exactly convincing. or specific. ]
Livin' is better'n bein' dead, right? Almost killed 'im the other day an' I ain't lookin' t' finish the job.
[ he pauses for a beat or two, realising what he's saying and how that sounds. ]
I mean I wasn't meanin' t' kill 'im! It ain't safe so... s'why I'm here. Ain't real safe for ya neither but it don't ever happen durin' the day.
[ a perfectly reasonable excuse for everything, meaning he doesn't have to think about it any more deeply than that. ]
no subject
Ah... the fairy queen's warning. [Had he not listened? Or just not understood? And now...
Jane huffs out a sharp breath through her nose. She moves, putting her back against the tree next to them and then without another word she scoops up the little dog and tucks him firmly into her lap.]
You should know that I think you are being utterly ridiculous. Being out here like this is doing nobody any good at all, least of all yourself.
no subject
[ he would love it if she would ignore the fact that he just yelled and flailed his tiny dog legs when she picked him up. what did he think was going to happen? it's unclear, but in his defence, it's not like he's used to being picked up. ]
What're ya sayin'? 'Course it is! If I ain't around then I can't fuck it up with my shitty magic now can I?! Who cares if it ain't doin' me any good? Don't matter.
no subject
[Since he doesn't appear to be making any effort to wiggle out of her lap and back into the cold snow, Jane sets a hand on top of his fuzzy head and scritches lightly between his ears.
That Izō doesn't think it matters isn't a surprise to her, and yet...]
It matters to me. [She tells him, tilting her head to look at him.] And it matters to Ryouma.
