That sounded way too dramatic, didn't it?

[Jean chuckled a little. Not in the most amused tone, but more like a melancholic kind of one. Really, if Crow asked he'd probably tell him about it.]

Good. I'll probably close my eyes a little once I instruct the villagers on one more thing. It never hurts to be too careful.

Not dramatic, but...it's just something I don't understand. I don't think I'll ever experience those hardships unless it's here in Avalon. My world is pretty peaceful. It's not like we don't have any worries, but they seem insignificant when compared to war.

[ Crow is curious, but he also wants to feign ignorance at the same time. He already had a hard time dealing with the food shortage and the idea of self-harm. Jean's experiences on the battlefield will be pretty traumatizing.

Still...]

So how young were you when you had to learn to fight?

All worlds have their worries. They can't really be compared to one another. What might feel like a small to me would still feel big for you.

[Nothing wrong with feigning ignorance either.]

I joined the army when I was twelve. It's the standard age back home.

Yeah, I guess you're right.

[Crow smiles. They did have to fight the Queen of Darkness before he arrived in Avalon, so that's a pretty big deal!]

Twelve?! That's so young! I only started learning how to play the guitar at that age!

It didn't feel young to me. Though the training we undertook might have felt a little easier had I been older. Anyway, my first real battles were only after I turned fifteen.

[Still young, but at least he was a teenager!]

Fifteen? That's still pretty young!

[At that age Crow was living a pretty carefree life and being a menace at school. He certainly took those days for granted.]

So being trained so young, did you feel prepared to go into battle? Though I guess nothing can ever prepare you for that.

Unlike some of the people who trained together with me, I definitely didn't feel ready. Then again, I was never supposed to join the frontlines.

[He thinks back on Eren "I'm fifteen and ready to kill all titans" Jaeger.]

The first battle change everything for me.

[ It makes sense to be nervous and Crow can also see someone boasting about it too, but he's sure they were all scared to death.]

So was it a victorious battle or was it more like a kick in the teeth, eye-opening fight?

[Somehow he knows the answer with the slightly somber tone this conversation takes.]

I joined the military to get to a section of it closest to the king and away from all fighting.

[The easy-ish life. Now that he knew more he knew that life would have sucked too.]

... more of the second one. We did win, in the end, but lost too many people. Among them my best friend.

[They hadn't been ready. The attack was a surprise one. The veterans weren't around. Still, somehow they won.]

[Crow thinks about Jean's entry into the military, and how he meant to stay away from the fighting. Yet, it seems inevitable that he ends up on the frontlines somehow. That's crazy.

The rocker looks a bit sad to hear about Jean's best friend.]

[ He couldn't imagine losing a best friend. Something like that would destroy him. Crow looks down at his hands for a moment, before continuing.]

That sounds really tough. How did you cope with that? Or did even have time to process everything before the next fight?

[Jean feels sort of bad for the mood to have come crashing this badly, but it is what is is whenever his world comes to story time.]

There was a long time before we entered the next fight. There was, however, a lot to be done with the aftermath of the battle so my mind was usually busy. But I kept his words in my heart. Something he said to me. I guess... that's helped me cope.

[Something he still thought about when he became uncertain, really.]

I suppose I'm still not fully coping, sometimes. But I also know he'd hate to see me remain still and unable to move on forever.

He sounds like a great friend.

[Especially to keep supporting and motivating someone from beyond the grave, this person must have left quite an impact on Jean. Or at least his death did.

It's a hard subject for Crow since he never really had to deal with any of this. Though Avalon has hardened him a bit, so he's capable of listening to Jean and not freaking out.]

In your own time, you'll handle it. There's not much time to reflect with the multiverse to save. Still keeping everything bottled up inside can't be healthy either. Maybe you should go out into an open field and just scream at the top of your lungs? It's pretty therapeutic.

[Their time together was short, but it had been meaningful. During his training days, Jean would argue that Marco was his only friend.]

That might be a good idea. There were some nice open fields nearby, even... so maybe I should do that before we start fighting the orcs, huh?

[Crow shrugs with a smile.]

Might be good to get that frustration out now, or you can reserve that for when we fight the orcs, too! Either way, I'll cover you if you need a minute.

[ Crow can entertain both groups with a rousing battle anthem of the apocalypse if need be.]
