Autumn, despite the chillier weather, is a season of warmth and gathering. Perhaps moreso this year than normal, given the rather unplanned gathering of Celliwig and Lestari underneath Camelot's roofs. Though significant contributions from otherworlders have made food, shelter, clothes and other productions and donations, medical care, security and protection, and childcare an amazing group effort, typical individual celebrations for the departure of the dead from Avalon aren't being held, like Lestari's Death Ball. After looking at all the support they've been given, Lestari and Celliwig have looked at what they have to offer to help both their own people and the people of Camelot and other worlds. |
The people of Lestari excel in cognitive magic, and while there are those who use it for mind-altering magics, there is a good portion who dedicate their studies to emotional and psychological support. One such method is the enchantment of origami paper into something affectionately called Worry Monsters: an specialized counseling technique used to help form support bonds between people with negative emotions. Having spent a portion of the month enchanting paper, two square sheets of paper are handed out to anyone the encounter.
| ||
| ||
There are a variety of paintings with different curses applied. Navigate through the library and escape the haunted paintings-- pairs who make it through without turning back will gain a Celliwig Token.
Another token can be gained via scavenger hunt in the Broceliande. Find cursed dolls from within tree hollows. The dolls will giggle and try to run away, may move when they're only visible in the corner of your eye if you set them down. What's perhaps a little spookier is that they take on the appearance of the first person to touch them, though they will never exceed three inches in height. |

![]() | The last test of courage invokes a temporary blindness hex on one of the partners. Both partners are walked into a soundproofed room, entirely silent in a way that truly seems to mess with one's head. The unblinded partner is only allowed to answer "yes" or "no" questions, though no one will fault them for giggling as long as they give no clues otherwise. The blind partner is to stick their hands into a tank of water with mystery items hidden within. These items may be mere objects like peeled grapes in soggy noodles, or perhaps the tank is filled with chicken bones and those tiny garra that eat dead cells and are sometimes used for pedicures. All the items are set up to feel spooky, but ultimately are unharmful. As long as the partner who can give clues doesn't break the yes/no rules and the item is guessed within 3 guesses, a token will be rewarded! |

Bring tokens to the inn where a stall has been set up, with Gwion working the booth to exchange tokens for the following prizes:

[ It's not quite a whine, but it's close. Even if she does appreciate the horror fun policing going on, that fact doesn't change. ]
I'm the worst person to watch movies with. Even when I know it's coming, they still get me every time. You'd think I'd be used to them by now, but... I'm not.
[ For reasons that Ritsuka has not taken the time to think on too deeply, she can face down a monster actively trying to rip her throat out more easily than she can deal with something taking advantage of a (semi) spooky atmosphere to get a jump out of her. She drifts a little closer to Monika without thinking about it, definitely antsy as she side-eyes that painting. ]
I wish I had your confidence, though. I'm pretty sure the best I can do with a mannequin is kick it if it tries to get too close. Is running a good idea, or not?
no subject
[ If knowing something was illogical meant you would no longer be affected by it, gosh would the world be a better place. Unfortunately, human brains are dumb and she's gifted with one in spite of technically have been born as an AI.
And watching movies... On her own, she'd probably find the horror boring. With a boyfriend or girlfriend though, she'd allow herself to get scared just for the free cuddling. No matter! She smiled at Ritsuka and ]
No running. The kick would probably be enough to dismantle them.
[ Unless they were magical, but details. ]
Let's get going~! And no matter what, no splitting up! We don't want to give them ammo, ahaha!
no subject
[ She's still sticking close to Monika, though, finally risking looking away from the offending painting. Maybe if she doesn't look at all, it'll be fine? At the very least, if she's distracted, the jumpscare can't get her as badly. Ugh, it really is the anticipation that's the worst part. A part of her wishes she could be more like the girls she'd been friends with in school, the ones that could just shamelessly latch onto someone when nervous, but Ritsuka's never been good at that. ]
Good thing I wore my heavier boots today, huh? I can't really do much in the way of fighting, but I can definitely kick someone where it hurts.
[ But moving on! She takes a step down the hallway, then immediately looks to Monika again. Maybe she's not going to latch onto the other girl's arm or anything, but she's still not going to do anything to widen the gap between them if she doesn't have to. ]
cw: creepy painting(?)
[ Yet again... They were exactly in the right age range to be the victims in a horror movie. Depending on the type of horror. Thankfully, she would refrain from talking of this to her. ]
What are your magic types? You can always use them if needed, too.
[ As they went forward, they'd stumble on a gigantic painting at the end of the hallway. Monika rose an eyebrow as she approached it. She wasn't stupid enough to get too close to it, though. ]
Oh, I know that one. It's usually treated as the scariest painting ever made. It creeped the heck out of me when Yuri showed me it. [It was most definitely unsettling, but scary? Monika didn't seem fazed as she spoke.] "Saturn Devouring His Son" by Francisco Goya. Did you know he never intended for anyone to see it? It was discovered in a corner of his house after his death. It was even hidden behind a curtain...
[ Nevermind that this particular version comes with the devoured son's body becoming very subtly smaller with time, as if he was really being devoured. ]

[ Maybe if she'd arrived here pre-Chaldea, she would have been more excited to try. In some ways, Camelot feels like it could have been a dream come true for baby Ritsuka--the one who'd still believed in magic and fairies and giant robots. And even into her teenage years, she would have been thrilled to live out a scenario where she discovered magic is real, and you have it too!
But the reality is that after three years and change in Chaldea, in an environment where she's known very well that magic is real, but that she has next to none... arriving in Camelot and learning about this didn't really encourage her to look too deeply into the matter. She's done well enough with just her own physical abilities and sheer stubborn determination; magic, in her mind, is something left to the people who know what they're doing.
Never mind that, though. She peeks at the painting as they approach, then recoils a little on instinct. Whoa! ]
--I can't say I'd blame him?! If I'd painted that, I'd probably want to keep it out of the way, too. That's like digging up someone's old edgy forum posts and publishing them for everyone to see... why does it look like he's actually chewing?
[ The appeal of mukbangs as a genre is completely lost on Ritsuka, especially in this moment. ]
no subject
[ Though, maybe she had her reasons to not explore her magic... Everyone carried a trauma, heh? She'd already pretty much ascertained that in spite of the smile, she was like Sayori. Hiding dark thoughts behind a smile. So it wouldn't be too surprising.
Well anyway... Time to keep the history lesson going! ]
Mhm! Though, he painted it like, late in his life. He did many paintings like this one. Funnily enough, each of those were painted directly upon the walls of his house. The wallpaper upon which they were painted was said to be really pretty and colorful... Then the wallpaper was removed and put on canvases. [She paused.] Collectively, they're known as the "Black Paintings."
[ And there was like... The echoing sound of someone chewing suddenly coming from the painting. It was gross, truth to be told. And it didn't really sound like someone eating, more like someone devouring with wild abandon.
Monika didn't seem to hear anything though. ]
Um... Maybe he is? You know, in spite of its name, nobody knows if it's really Saturn and his son. It's just a theory. [She raised a finger.] Anyway, we should keep going.
no subject
[ "Weird" is probably the best way to put it, in her opinion. She doesn't feel like she's got a complex about it (though her yardstick to measure that is Kadoc, who... is probably a little too intense about his self-judgment for her to match), but it's still a strange concept to her. ]
I guess a wall is a bigger canvas than anything you could easily get. I know a couple of artists who'd probably take that idea and run with it.
[ Even if Da Vinci isn't famous for painting a whole ceiling (which is really about the extent of Ritsuka's knowledge of fine art), she's definitely the sort of person who embodies go big or go home.
And because she's listening to Monika's spiel, it takes her a moment to hear the chewing sound--but once she starts to hear it, she can't unhear it. Oh god. How do people who listen to ASMR eating channels handle this?! It's awful. ]
...Yeah, let's, uh, let's move on. Before this thing gets any funny ideas.
[ She's still not sure she trusts the first painting they've left behind. It's hard to tell, between the way things echo slightly in this hallway and the disgusting chewing sounds, but she is definitely primed to imagine there's extra footsteps behind them. ]
no subject
[ She tried to sound cheerful and steer the topic away from the painting. And she knew artists, huh? She'd have to ask her about that. Oh boy the amount of questions and fangirling Monika would do once she'd learn Ritsuka was the one who had summoned Beowulf and the countless "historial" people that were in this world!
Regardless, things were quiet for a moment... They reached a room with paintings lined on the walls. And every single one of them? Were the painting they'd just left. An echoing chewing noise emanated from each and every one of them. More disturbingly, each of them had eaten more or less of the body... One even had only the foot left to eat! And were the eyes of the "monster" on those paintings following them?
What made it possibly worse though? Was what Monika said upon seeing all of those paintings. ]
Huh, blank canvas... [Yep, she wasn't seeing any of them.] I guess that's a way to make things a bit more unsettling, ahaha.
no subject
[ She rubs the back of her neck, slightly bashful. What a wild idea, the idea that she's powerful at all. If anything, her strength lies in how weak she actually is; there's a half-baked theory, in the back of her mind, that she succeeds because heroes like Beowulf take one look at her and think: this girl is hopeless, and someone needs to make sure she survives. ]
It's more like... one of those situations where magic exists, but I didn't know about it until a few years ago. And it's not like I was secretly some kind of genius or anything, I was just--in the right place at the right time.
[ Or the wrong place at the wrong time, which might be what's happening here. Ritsuka pauses as well when she sees the hallway of blank paintings, grimacing briefly. ]
...I feel like this hall is creepier than the last one, to be honest.
no subject
[ She wasn't nearly as self-depreciating and self-loathing as him, but the way she talked reminded her a bit of Kadoc. Downplaying one's own achievements because they aren't special or something. ]
I'm not a genius either... In fact, the overwhelmingly vast majority of people aren't geniuses or anything. [She smiled.] If you come last in the Olympics, that probably sounds like a defeat... But you were in the Olympics to begin with, you know? You're already at the top of the world.
[ So of course, she used on her the same metaphor she'd used with Kadoc. It was easy to dismiss yourself as "not special" or "bad" when comparing yourself with those better than you... But that was missing the mark entirely. And those people better than you? Were always worse than you in certain domains. But of course, thinking like that was easier said than done.
For the time being, Monika stopped in her tracks, completely ignoring the "paintings." ]
So really, even if you're not on par with the winners? That doesn't make you any less exceptional.
no subject
[ Always a but. If she knew Monika was comparing her to Kadoc, she'd agree--despite their vastly different approach to things, they've definitely got some strongly corresponding opinions on things. The difference, she'd argue, is that Kadoc had been explicitly recruited by Chaldea's original Director; for however weak and unremarkable he might think himself, that's still the truth.
But Ritsuka? She'd been nothing but a number, initially. ]
I honestly barely have any magic whatsoever, and most of that is just because I had someone setting up spells that I could just trigger when I needed to. But I was working with actual mages, and they're all pretty stuck up, you know? Like, think of the worst group of mean girls possible, and then multiply that by a thousand.
The only reason I got to do anything is because I was lucky. I'm not saying I didn't manage to pull off a lot, and more than I thought I would, but... that doesn't change how I got started.
no subject
[ She could imagine how awful this felt when you were surrounded by people who excelled at magic... She had good reasons to feel the way she did. But to put herself down like that? To say everything she had was due to nothing but chance? Sure, chance always played a role. But chance meant nothing if you didn't have the drive to take advantage of it. ]
Of the... Seven and a half billion people who live on Earth, how many have access to magic at all? [Her smile became a bit sad.] Of course, it's understandable why you feel that way... I would too. But I think it's important to realize your personal accomplishments are nothing to scoff at.
[ Ritsuka had seen Monika last month, after all. Monika was good at giving advice, not so much at following them when she was herself feeling down. ]
Are you from Kadoc's world per chance? [A tilt of the head.] He mentioned "mages" too, and not in the most positive light.
no subject
[ It's not really a surprise. He's been in Camelot for longer than Ritsuka has, and for all that he gives off the attitude of being completely antisocial, she's still seen him engage with other people of his own free will multiple times. ]
Yeah, we're from the same place. He was actually born into mage society, though--the way I understand it, the age of things matters? So like, a family that's been developing their magic for ten generations is gonna be stronger than one that's "only" been around for five. And they get real mean about it.
So when you consider I'm like... a one on the scale of one to old, you can probably guess why people get weird about me, back home.
[ Including Kadoc, she doesn't say, though she wouldn't deny it if Monika reads between the lines. He's no longer quite so ready to snap or sneer at everything Ritsuka does or says, but there's no point in denying that's a thing they've been dealing with. ]
no subject
[ That probably a word people used to describe Kadoc very often, she'd been fortunate to see pretty much nothing but his kinder side— And his self-depreciating one too. ]
I see... Sounds to me like people too full of themselves. [A pause.] Or perhaps insecure about their own skills.
[ That aspect applied to Kadoc specifically, though it might very well apply to other mages too, she didn't know. Honestly, she couldn't imagine him getting haughty and mean about it... Yet again, who in Avalon could imagine her going all yandere-like and killing her best friends? When backed into a corner, everyone had the potential to become awful.
So of course she sympathized with him considering she'd been in a somewhat similar boat back home— Thank goodness, people grew and realized their mistakes. ]
Today they're scorning you... [She raised a finger.] And in 500 years, they may call you the glorious founder of a great family. [And at that, she shrugged.] Their opinion isn't worth anything if you ask me.
no subject
[ That's definitely not the word Ritsuka would use, but at least she's much more inclined to be nice to him than Kadoc himself seems to prefer. In spite of having faced him at his ugliest, she's never forgotten what both Da Vinci and Mash said about him--and knowing what she does about mage society, it's not a surprise how that twisted a naturally kind and quiet boy as he grew up.
She doesn't want to bring that up specifically, though. If Kadoc has a friend in Monika, she doesn't want to be the one to bring up the history she has with him. If anyone is going to tell his friends about what happened in Russia, it should be Kadoc himself. ]
He's nicer than he gives himself credit for, but the way I understand it, mages are all just kind of...
..."full of themselves" isn't a bad way of putting it, but it's also just kind of underselling it. You could literally save the world and all of human history, and the most they'll give you is a "you tried" gold star.
[ That she says with more genuine good humor than the stuff about Kadoc. "You Tried" is probably better than just a consolatory T-shirt, at least. ]
no subject
[ Save the world and all of human history, huh? That could have been nothing more than an example, but the wording of "human history" was a bit too specific. It lined a little too well with Kadoc's explanation of "proper human history" and "lostbelts." ]
I think we get along pretty well because we both lack in confidence. [Well, he more than her, but still.] I just happen to be pretty good at hiding my lack of confidence and assertiveness, ahaha! [And that was just an educated guess based on everything Ritsuka had said together with Kadoc's self-esteem issues:] That and I guess we both have an issue with playing second fiddle to the heroes of our respective stories.
[ Their circumstances were very different-- Monika had been forced into a secondary role by her creator as a cruel experiment to see what she would do with her powers. Kadoc had been forced into a secondary rule due to circumstances out of anyone's controls. But even so... There was some common ground to relate there.
Regardless, she smiled at Ritsuka. ]
Those mages still sound like complete and utter, well... [She comes from a PG-13 visual novel (or so she thinks), using certain words still sounds very unnatural.] You should take advantage of Avalon to bask in the praise you deserve, ahaha!
no subject
[ Ritsuka's confidence (or lack thereof) exists in a weird sort of place: she knows she's capable of getting things done, and she knows she's pulled off feats that no one believed would be possible--not for anyone alone, and especially not for her. She knows that she's pulled off ridiculous things time and time again, and she has faith that she can adapt to whatever gets thrown at her.
At the same time... she's still a young girl, and one who's never been much of a fan of the spotlight. The irony about her situation versus Kadoc (or Monika, too) is that she's someone more comfortable in a secondary supporting role, and through circumstances has found herself in a leading role. The idea of basking in praise is definitely too much for her. ]
I mean, I'm all for faking it to you make it--but seriously, I'd rather just hang out with people! No praise necessary!
no subject
[ She really was a lot more like Sayori than like her, heh. Monika had avoided getting under the spotlight ever since her arrival in Avalon due to the intense guilt she felt... But gosh if she didn't love being praised and held in high esteem. ]
Well, maybe not bask in it... But if praises are deserved, you shouldn't refuse them. [It could come off as false modesty, even when it really wasn't it. And it did wonders for your self-esteem when you accepted the praise and love of other people.] Anyway, we really ought to find a way out.
no subject
[ She's always been more into sports than studies; even if Ritsuka doesn't strongly identify as either a jock or a nerd in the battle of high school society, she knows she leans more in one direction than the other. There's probably some deep artistic meaning to having an entire hall of these blank canvases, but she doesn't really get it.
So instead, she grabs Monika's sleeve and tugs. ]
C'mon, let's get out of here and get coffee or something. You can tell me more about horror tropes or something. I'd be happy to listen.
no subject
[ Monika said those words without really thinking about it. First thing that came to her mind when it came to blank canvases... Maybe yet another remnant of her existence in a horror game. Hopefully that wouldn't come off as creepy.
No matter, she nodded. ]
Let's go~!
no subject
[ But she's thoughtful about it, rather than put off. And she doesn't wait for more prompting; when Monika says let's go!, Ritsuka immediately starts walking. Every now and then, she feels like she sees something moving across those blank canvases... but that's probably just their shadows, right? ]
I guess, if I had to put something down, I'd rather think that it has to do with hope. You know, like how a blank page can become anything, and you don't have to be a professional artist to make something you like.
...Your idea probably fits better with the themes of the rest of the gallery, though.
no subject
Ahaha, but I like your interpretation better.
[ Especially as an artist, even if her art was limited to poems and music, it was nice to think about. ]
I guess recent events have kind of darkened my outlook on things...
[ She went silent and continued leading the way. Every now and then, she'd see Saturn nomming on his child, but only for a fraction of second. Probably just an illusion from this place. ]
no subject
If this were Mash, or the female Servants who turn to her for comfort and advice, Ritsuka thinks this would be where she tries to initiate some sort of contact. Some sort of friendly hand-hold, or a a shoulder bump, or something. But knowing more about the nature of what happened, that doesn't feel like the right choice, either. She does stick close, trying to not look too hard for too long at those white canvases. ]
...This is probably going to sound really trite, and maybe naive, but... even darkness passes. That's also part of being human. And it sucks while it's going on, and while you're recovering, but--it's not forever. It might feel like it, but it isn't.
no subject
She knew Kadoc came from a world with alternate histories. And she knew Kadoc. Could it be...? ]
.... Kipposhi talked to you, didn't he?
[ There was no need to hide her suspicion. ]
Not content just playing with me, he's decided on telling everyone I see. [She sighed and shook her head. Ritsuka wasn't the first person she'd found who knew of that. Somehow, she doubted she'd be the last.] But I was mostly referring to how you found me with the video game cabinet.
no subject
[ She doesn't try to talk around it, just shrugs a little, apologetic. Her voice is gentle when she responds. ]
I don't know how much either he or Kadoc have told you about what it's like back home, but... he's technically working for me. So--I didn't know about what happened when I met you, but he told me about it when I found out he'd been injured. He didn't give me all the details, but I know enough to know he was a jackass.
...I'm not gonna apologize for him, or say that he's not that bad a guy. I'm sorry you went through that, though.
But what I said counts for the thing with the cabinet, too. I've had a lot of practice with dealing with that kind of thing lately.
