Autumn, despite the chillier weather, is a season of warmth and gathering. Perhaps moreso this year than normal, given the rather unplanned gathering of Celliwig and Lestari underneath Camelot's roofs. Though significant contributions from otherworlders have made food, shelter, clothes and other productions and donations, medical care, security and protection, and childcare an amazing group effort, typical individual celebrations for the departure of the dead from Avalon aren't being held, like Lestari's Death Ball. After looking at all the support they've been given, Lestari and Celliwig have looked at what they have to offer to help both their own people and the people of Camelot and other worlds.

Prompt banner title: Worrigami

The people of Lestari excel in cognitive magic, and while there are those who use it for mind-altering magics, there is a good portion who dedicate their studies to emotional and psychological support. One such method is the enchantment of origami paper into something affectionately called Worry Monsters: an specialized counseling technique used to help form support bonds between people with negative emotions. Having spent a portion of the month enchanting paper, two square sheets of paper are handed out to anyone the encounter.

The first paper says:
"Personifying your emotions can give them a tangible form and make them easier to face. Write down something that causes you worry, stress, fear, or sadness. This is your Worry Monster."

The second paper says:
"When your Worry Monster is present, how does it make you feel? Any reaction is valid."

 dragon origami

When both papers are written on, the writing on both will disappear as if absorbed by the paper, then the pages will animate and fuse, then begin to fold into a monster! Halloween is this month, is it not? There is no sense in not having a little fun.

These little Worry Monsters will stomp off and begin roaming Camelot until they find a match-- someone who shares those feelings. Once they find an emotional matching Worry Monster, the monsters will return to their creator and grow to the size of kaiju. They are very light, enchanted paper, so even if someone or something gets stepped on, they won't be hurt or damaged. However, they are strong enough to pick their makers up and carry them to the matching monster who will do the same. Don't worry-- characters will be invisible while being carried by their monster, so their identities will be protected until they are brought to their match. The paper monster will turn to butterflies and fly away once their task is complete.

What matches do after they are brought to each other is up to them-- but they will know, undoubtedly, that they share the same worries-- they are with someone who understands. Do it as many times as you'd like, for as many negative emotions as your character wants.

Prompt banner title: Accursed Thanks

For finding something to do, Celliwig offers a solution. While Lestari's people have spent their efforts this month enchanting papers, the people of Celliwig are less apt to share so openly. Instead, they take their time learning about a variety of holidays from other worlds, and come to find one they can apply their particular talents to. While most of their showcase in the past has been on light magic, a holiday such as Halloween plays in particular to their talents in dark magic. A number of locations that have opted in and won't interfere with other relief efforts have been enchanted with dark magics for brave souls to venture into and test their courage! What's more, each of these locations will yield tokens for the victors that can be used to gain prizes. All courage tests must be performed with partners. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

The library has been converted into a haunted art gallery, many of which have had their paints and other implements enchanted. Some paintings will seem like they're watching you, others will seem like a small figure in the background is following you throughout the library in different paintings.

A painting of fruit may start throwing the fruit at you and materializing it into real fruit, so you may find yourself pelted with tomatoes if you don't run fast! A single painting filled with black paint might start leaking and filling the room you're in,
pulling you into shadow until you're stuck in the library's underground labyrinth. (Reference monthly quests here and here for more info about the labyrinth.)

There are a variety of paintings with different curses applied. Navigate through the library and escape the haunted paintings-- pairs who make it through without turning back will gain a Celliwig Token.

Another token can be gained via scavenger hunt in the Broceliande. Find cursed dolls from within tree hollows. The dolls will giggle and try to run away, may move when they're only visible in the corner of your eye if you set them down. What's perhaps a little spookier is that they take on the appearance of the first person to touch them, though they will never exceed three inches in height.

Beware during your search, however, as there are a good many trees that have been transfigured into mimics. Though the mimics are not going to attack anyone, they do have giant hidden, wriggling tongues that will reach up and wrap the unalert up above the ground for capture. The only way down is if a partner fights the mimic, so don't go alone!

Find a doll of both you and a partner and make it back to Camelot to obtain your token. The curse will break once they're exchanged for a token, so you can keep the cute little doll for yourself if you'd like.

a blindfolded blonde ladyThe last test of courage invokes a temporary blindness hex on one of the partners. Both partners are walked into a soundproofed room, entirely silent in a way that truly seems to mess with one's head.

The unblinded partner is only allowed to answer "yes" or "no" questions, though no one will fault them for giggling as long as they give no clues otherwise. The blind partner is to stick their hands into a tank of water with mystery items hidden within. These items may be mere objects like peeled grapes in soggy noodles, or perhaps the tank is filled with chicken bones and those tiny garra that eat dead cells and are sometimes used for pedicures. All the items are set up to feel spooky, but ultimately are unharmful. As long as the partner who can give clues doesn't break the yes/no rules and the item is guessed within 3 guesses, a token will be rewarded!

Bring tokens to the inn where a stall has been set up, with Gwion working the booth to exchange tokens for the following prizes:
  • 1 Token: Celliwig glasswork glass set of 4-- spooky themed! It's filled with candy upon receiving, so they are friendly for everyone.

  • 2 Tokens: Recipe: Smokescreen - Cast this spell on any liquid to make it billow plumes of fog. The smaller the water surface, the smaller the billow. A shot glass might just create a small whisp, but two mop buckets would be enough to fill up a medium room. Will not effect the contents of the liquid. Cannot be used on water bodies larger than a swimming pool (could screen about half a block).

  • 3 Tokens: Recipe: From the Void - Summons a disembodied tentacle from the shadows. It takes a lot of energy, so you could probably manage up to three casts a day at most before becoming exhausted. Great for binding enemies, sneaking in small spaces, and reaching places you might not be able to otherwise. The tentacle will follow whatever command you have in mind upon summoning, so be sure to concentrate on the task at hand!

[ Ardyn had drifted over to the small crowd, initially out of mere curiousity spiced with boredom - but his attention was quickly drawn by the beating heart, so wonderfully realistic, and then by the story itself. It's one he can really appreciate, and...

Somewhere along the way a noise seemed to enter his consciousness. The thumping of a heart, yes, - louder and louder, and more than one heart, many more, until his mind was nothing but a sea of noise.

But that, too, was not unfamiliar to Ardyn, not after the many years of turning people into demons. He kept an amused - if somewhat condescending - smile on his face as the story wound on, and then joined in the clapping once the performance was over. ]

A truly masterful show, my friend! I must congratulate you on your skill as a storyteller.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that it is possible to undone the enchantment that is placed onto anything, I suppose. My friend’s dad managed to get a Ford Anglia and make various magical enchantments for his use. So maybe he could try to undo it as well?

(Well, he hasn’t tested it on an enchanted portrait before coming to Avalon or anything like that, but if Ron’s dad can enchant a Ford Anglia to fly, then maybe anyone can try to remove the enchantments on any item as they wish.

Also disturbed by the painting’s glances is Rose who dares to poke her head out of Harry’s pants pocket to see the eyes staring at them while they pass it by, and when said eyes look at her directly on the eyes, she softly squeaks in a panic and dives back onto the pocket again.)

I certainly wouldn't do that! ... And I could always share them with Caster...

[ Della snorts at this - mostly in arrogance. ]

I've got a lifetime experience with it myself... there's nothing that can scare me!

[ The remains of the tongue seem to withdraw, so Della gets up, brushing herself off. ]

I think that's all she wrote, my man. Let's grab the dolls!

Claude has been enjoying their little jaunt through the forest; he's not easily spooked, so the games on offer have been more charming than creepy, but more importantly, holding hands with Lorenz and walking through the trees, he can finally see him start to become more confident, not worrying about what onlookers might say in away from the prying eyes of the city.

He stands back to watch as Lorenz pulls himself up to grab the doll, raising an eyebrow as he looks it over. "Cute? I... suppose?" He can't deny it does look like him, at any rate. Then he adds with a slight grin, "I wouldn't trust it, though! I bet he's scheming something."

Ahaha, you sure sound pretty confident.

[ Was she from the same world than Drake and Fenton? She could imagine them getting startled very easily. ]

Let's stick together, alright? Splitting up would be the most common horror cliche.

Well, Uncle Scrooge decided it was high time to explore the secrets within the pyramids of the legendary pharaoh, Toth-Ra! A few secret panels and tiles later, the group split up - Scrooge, LP, Huey and Dewey were in the city, while Louie and Webby were in the other chambers of the pyramid.

The city was full of people, who had lived without the sun for centuries! They were waiting for their pharaoh to return and show them the way, while Louie was on the hunt for his treasure!

[ The story is, of course, being exaggerated in hand gestures and expressions. ]

[ Drake and Fenton are WEENIES. ]

Oh, totally! And we also shouldn't say anything too on the nose, like "what's the worst that could happen"? Or "I bet that noise was just the wind"!

It is easier out here in nature, yes. Letting the possibility of being accosted by disapproval at every turn drift to the back of his mind. The rare occasions when their paths might cross another completing the same challenge he can't help tensing up, nervous but only clinging harder to Claude's hand.

Not that they've really seen many others so deep in the woods.

"Oh, of that I've no doubt." Even as he says it a sneaky little rose vine creeps obediently out of his sleeve to start looping itself neatly around the doll. "I'd like to see him get out of this."

Surely even the enchantment on these little things is not strong enough to break through the veritable cocoon of vines currently encasing the poor little thing.

Under normal circumstances, Somnus would not share any of what is on his mind with any other. How unfortunate, then, that the cognitive-magic sorcerers of Lestari also excel at the power of suggestion.

It’s only a few moments after he crosses path with a shady, insistent sorcerer that he finds himself magically compelled to pen a worry upon a piece of paper, only to find that paper coming to life.

“Brother.”

Their worrygami have found each other over some sort of similar concern. That, or this is a gross mistake. Somnus’ is a dragon of some sort, and it deposits him before the other man. He straightens up once his feet find the ground, smoothing out a nonexistent wrinkle of his cloak.

His expression has yet to change, grim as it is, but the cautious stance with which he regards him may indicate some level of surprise. That, or preparation to defend against an attack.

The best course of action would be to leave.

"Maybe it's the resemblance, but I almost feel bad for him," Claude shakes his head, watching as Lorenz employs his magic. But that's one of their quarry well and truly secured, so they set off once more, Claude keeping an eye out for another tree that might hold their prize. "You know, it wouldn't surprise me if your doll wasn't hiding in a tree at all, but hiding in a bunch of pretty flowers."

...

I'm sorry if this is rude, but--honestly, I think that's the weirder thing that's happened to me today.

[ She points to the tree, which is still doing something with that rock. To be honest, she doesn't particularly want to think about what it might be. ]

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

[ It's a long, drawn-out, extended whine. Nooooo. She's comfortable! Why would anyone be so unkind as to move her?

But she does finally turn her head enough to open an eye, squinting hard up at him. ]

...s'not a gutter, s'a capybara...

[personal profile] fujimaru 2021-10-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Those trees are very...

[ There's a longer pause as she searches for a more polite word. They were just very--very! They're extremely very a lot! ]

...Honestly, I probably would've done the same if I could. They were more handsy than I wanted to deal with.
fujimaru: (127)

[personal profile] fujimaru 2021-10-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate jump scares...

[ It's not quite a whine, but it's close. Even if she does appreciate the horror fun policing going on, that fact doesn't change. ]

I'm the worst person to watch movies with. Even when I know it's coming, they still get me every time. You'd think I'd be used to them by now, but... I'm not.

[ For reasons that Ritsuka has not taken the time to think on too deeply, she can face down a monster actively trying to rip her throat out more easily than she can deal with something taking advantage of a (semi) spooky atmosphere to get a jump out of her. She drifts a little closer to Monika without thinking about it, definitely antsy as she side-eyes that painting. ]

I wish I had your confidence, though. I'm pretty sure the best I can do with a mannequin is kick it if it tries to get too close. Is running a good idea, or not?

Lorenz laughs softly as he falls into step with Claude again. He reaches out to snag the other's hand again and as he does the band of roses around his wrist slips down to twist its way around one of the Claude's fingers. But Lorenz doesn't say a word, struggling to keep a smirk off his face.

"Well I could hardly blame him for preferring flowers to the darkness of some overcast tree." Nope just not acknowledging the fact that he could easily tie Claude up just like his doll.

R-right, we've got things to do! Paintings to see. Tokens to get.

[ Possibly... possibly Ritsuka should have paid more attention to what this was supposed to be when she decided to check out the gallery, but it's too late now. They're in it now, but as long as they make it through to the end of the gallery, it'll be fine! Right?

...

Right.

Ritsuka manages to take a single step forward past the mannequin painting when Crow yells, and she whips around as fast as possible at the sound--she's totally not scared! This is just like how cheap jumpscares get her even when she knows they're coming! That's all.

The tangerine whiffs right past her head, enough to fluff her hair. It probably would have been much cooler if it weren't fruit. It still startles her enough to stagger, though, closer to a painting that is mostly dominated by a giant face in the canvas, like a face pressed against the window. Oh boy. ]

Wh--where the heck did that come from?!

[ She nodded at her and smiled brightly. ]

Let's get going.

[ A rather normal-looking painting... Hopefully it wouldn't take too long to find. ]

... this... was the painting we passed before, wasn't it?

[Because the mysterious figure is gone. But that's not even the strangest thing about this piece.]

[Originally, the painting had been a scene of some nobleman's study, where a man had been reading in an armchair next to a crackling fireplace, with a dog sleeping peacefully nearby. The figure had appeared outside the door of the study, looking in.]

[Now, however, the study looks ransacked. The fireplace is snuffed out, books have been strewn about the floor, the nobleman is slumped on the floor, and the dog...]

[The dog is fine, thank goodness. But it is barking aggressively, looking towards the next painting that the strange person appeared in.]

Figured I may as well put it out there to be corrected if I'm wrong before we begin.
Alright, let's go.

[He's talking to the person in charge of this courage test, but motions for Naomi to follow. Gokudera actually looks a bit excited, and when the blindfold is on, he's a little... jumpy, certainly more alert as he's lead in.]

Help me to the tank?

[Gokudera holds out an arm, not wanting to run into the tank.]

[ Alberto is startled to be hugged from behind, too, but knowing it's Della... makes it all feel safer somehow. It draws a crooked, relived smile over his face, letting out a puff of a sigh, fond eyes drifting away from the startling painting to his seagull-dack-lady-friend. Her enthusiasm resonates so well with his own. Usually it's Alberto going, "C'mon, let's do another!" about scary things, but this is actually spooky rather than reckless, which is slightly out of his comfort zone... but not uncomfortable enough to dissuade him from following. He's got a weird, vague admiration for the woman from all their interactions, some kindred spirit somehow, as much as a child can perceive that toward an adult unconsciously, but knows that whatever weird shit may happen as they continue through this gallery, nothing bad is going to happen, between her and his harpoon. H-He's really jazzed about this harpoon, okay...? ]

Y-Yeah! Okay! Avanti!

[ And he lets her lead the way... ]

[ Looks like he was right about seeing Hijikata again, just ... not in an expected avenue. It's fine.

Ryouma nods. ]

I don't know if I'm any better, but...I won't know until I try, right?

Nothing wrong with being sure.

[Nodding, she follows after their guide and Gokudera, ready to get through this for the prize at the end, but the moment the blindfold's on, right... maybe she should've been blindfolded.]

[Unfortunately, she can't really talk more outside of two words now. At least she can say...]

Yes. [Before he would feel her hand on his arm, slowly guiding him over to the tank where she would only let go once he could touch the water.]

Oh. Irhya raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms dubiously, already on the defensive. She hopes the massive sword strapped to her back is warning enough on its own, though.

"Which one? There've been dozens over the last bell or so." She makes a face. "I have mine cornered... or had, I suppose. Now I guess it's just having a grand old time making me wait."
