quest | pumpkin mayhem!!

[ gran was all bumped and bruised from all the falls he had taken, but he was also having the time of his life trying to catch the pumpkins. no one could deny that he just saw the good in everything.

but this particular pumpkin he decorated was being a stubborn little thing. he was out of breath and aching, but who would win: the pumpkin's speed or gran's stubbornness? ]

C'mere you!! I got a spot with your name on it!!

[ for most of his life, gran had to build the necessities he needed in life, so the plight of the refugees was something he understood at a deeper level than most. when the news hit that they needed help housing the refugees ~~and being shot down as to using his home as a shelter~~, gran decided to help as much as he can, and if that meant building until his hands hurt, so be it.

and that's exactly what he's doing, making sure each and every bunk bed could handle anyone's weight. was he overworking himself? one hundred percent he is, but it was for the good of the people!!

fate episode | it's halloween!!

[ gran was rushing all over to find materials. hopping from store to store, he was picking out decorations for his home and costume, all in the effort to make the spooky month all the more worth it. after all, with all the refugees around, they certainly needed something to bring about their happiness!

but boy, he didn't think things through when at the end of his trip, he's got too many things to carry and not enough hands to carry it all. ]

Hm..... [ staring at your things isn't going to do anything, gran. ]

[Chill? What is 'chill', exactly? That's some kind of cooking technique, right?]

[If someone had been watching Allura's history closely so far, they might have expected that she would be awful with building beds. After all, she barely even knew the names of different hand tools, owing to the fact that royals aren't expected to do much handywork — and she claimed to be an awful artist, which should translate to poor skills in other creative endeavors.]

[But truthfully, a lot of this felt like second nature to her, as if it were putting together the pieces of a puzzle. Perhaps she had her father to thank for that, giving her an eye for engineering; or perhaps she had picked up more than she thought while assisting Coran in various technical and mechanical repairs.]

[Whatever the cause, just looking over the basic design again makes gears turn in her head...]

Say — you don't suppose that if we made some of these smaller, we could fit a third bunk on top? As an option for children and the like.

[And hey, at least it would be a change of pace from making the bigger, heavy-duty beds, right?]

I wonder if the inn would mind...

[ that immediately gets gran's attention. ]

Oh, that sounds fantastic! If we make sure to adjust for the size of the room, I'm sure it's possible. We'd maybe have to use stronger materials to support three instead of two, but I can see it working!

[ and then he remembered the inn and their rules. thank you, mysterious person, for bringing gran back down from the imaginary clouds. ]

Maybe we should make a prototype before jumping the gun?

[If it helps, she sounds likewise disappointed. There is a part of her that would love to ask forgiveness rather than permission, but...]

Yes, you're likely right. Let's start with the one and see what they think, before we start using up our resources on it.

[Speaking of, she's already taking a look at the materials available. In particular, something that could help reinforce the frame against the additional strain.]

But they should be in favor of the idea, shouldn't they? It would help even more with managing the space! And not all parts of the frame would need to be stronger. In fact, if we assume that the ones lying in the beds are lighter...

[Should she draw blueprints? Quite frankly, she doesn't tend to use them.]

They definitely would, considering we can't expand the inn itself, but even so, clearing any hurdles now would make things easier in the long run. [ take it from a guy who's been part of diplomatic hearings more times than he can count.

but luckily for her, gran doesn't think of blueprints-- he just jumps straight in with taking scraps of wood from earlier beds and starts making a mock up. ]

Taking the base of a bunk bed and making it into three could maybe use supports here, in the back, just for stability's sake. The ladder has to allow the person in the middle to get in as well, so that's another thing to worry about...

Whether they use these ones or not, they'll need to come up with some sort of better plan. I can say from experience that the trick they're using with the bedsheets and the magnetic fields works far better in concept than in practice...

[But he's right, of course. If they're presented with another bad idea, they'll probably be inclined to stick with the bad idea they already have, whether or not it's actually better. So she pays close attention to his explanation, putting together her own mental image of the final product.]

[And then something occurs to her. That's right — the Magnetic Lull spell can be used on anything, can't it?]

Hold on. I may have a way to assemble this prototype without nailing anything down.

[She casts the spell on two pieces of wood to demonstrate, and they click together easily. It's strong enough to hold flush without any help, but not so strong that she can't pull them apart or adjust their positioning.]

I'm not sure if the beds will be strong enough to test until it's fully assembled — but with this? We should be able to try a few ideas for parts like the ladder.

[ gran's eyes lit up once the girl put together the pieces of wood. he had completely forgotten about the magnetic lull spell, if only because he's too used to working with his hands, without the use of magic. ]

Oh, that could definitely work! Let's do it! [ he grins as he grabs more wood. ] Not wasting materials is especially important now, so that just makes the building phase a lot easier.

Now let me see...

[Oh, this is fantastic. It's easy to assemble and adjust the pieces, and on top of that? That click noise when things join together makes the whole process extremely satisfying. She's going to have to remember this trick.]

For the ladders, my first thought was to use the foot of the beds. We can split it in half, down the middle — with the left side only going up halfway, to the second bed, and the right side going all the way up to the top.

Oh, actually, yeah, I see that working...! Especially for kids, since they can even use them as chairs!

[ gran soon grabs his own wood pieces to run through some ideas. ] I would think that the other side would have to be weighted a bit more, as a safety precaution.

[Thrawn came out here to help with the pumpkins, and possibly even see what sort of decorations people put on said pumpkins. Decorating vegetables is an interesting form of art, one that he's seen on a few worlds. Though he's never seen artwork come to life and attack people.

As he enters the area with the pumpkins, he notices a man trying to run after one. Thrawn, his ysalamiri familiar on his shoulders, creates a wall of solid light for the pumpkin to run into.]

Do you require assistance?

Yes, please!

[ gran is immediately one to jump on help, and the light wall helps him indeed: the pumpkin runs straight into it. that surprise lets gran scoop up the pumpkin he had been chasing. he lets out a cheer before turning to grin at the new person. ]

Thank you!! I finally can put this one away! But there's a lot more, if you don't mind helping out some more.

Of course. That is why I came here.

[He can already see another pumpkin running about. Rather than running after it, Thrawn casts a spell to make twinkling lights appear around the pumpkin, leaving it disoriented and causing it to slow down. Thrawn easily power walks up to it and grabs it.]

They do not seem to be terribly bright. Try to outsmart them.

[ gran nods, having completely forgetting he had magic due to the sheer fun he was having actually chasing the pumpkins. he manages to outsmart the next pumpkin by making it trip over and over using vines. ]

Huh. That is a lot easier.

[A nearby pumpkin swoops at Thrawn, trying to dive bomb him in the head. Thrawn quickly ducks and grabs the pumpkin before it can fly any higher.]

They may not be very bright, but it seems that some of them are quite malicious.

Oh, that I've noticed. I've gotten bitten from time to time!

[ case in point, one tries to gander a nibble on gran's leg. thankfully all he had to do was shift to one side so its attack missed, and scooped it up just as fast as it came. ]

But now that I remembered I have magic, this'll be super easy!

Indeed. Let us hope that whatever magic is at work fades away before today ends.

[Thrawn uses twinkling lights to lure three pumpkins over to him, only to encase them inside a force field when they're close enough.]

Hopefully. I don't want to see the little buggers in my home, no matter how cute they are.

[ he uses his elemental magic to create a net out of vines and moss, soon scooping the pumpkins into said net to take them to their holding cage. ]

What's your name, anyways? I'm Gran.

A pleasure, Gran, I am Thrawn.

[He deposits his catch, but reacts too slowly to prevent a pumpkin from rolling into his shin. Thrawn only grunts and stumbles, before grabbing said pumpkin.]

[ gran winces when the pumpkin hits thrawn's knee. yeah, that might have hurt. he deposits his own pumpkin before saying anything. ]

You okay? That pumpkin didn't hurt you too bad, did it? [ he has a first aid kit at the ready. ]

No, it did not.

[Even if it stings a little, Thrawn's not about to let a little thing like a bruised shin stop him.]

[Gran isn't the only one going ham on Halloween decorations and supplies. Kazunari's room at the inn is small, but he fully intends to deck it out for the season. The same goes for around Kaika Theater - especially if they have something planned for the refugees as well. He wants to make everything as fun as can be.

The difference between Kazunari and Gran is that Kaz is an art student. He's used to carrying around more supplies than he has hands to carry - and still have hands to spare!

He has every intention of helping Gran. But first he's gotta be a little stupid about it. With Gran so focused on his things why not take the opportunity to come up from behind and:]

[Tis the season?]

Gah--?!?

[ well if kazunari wanted surprise, he got it. he gets it so much that gran trips over one of the bags and falls right to the floor on his ass. he yelps in pain once he hits the ground, but is otherwise okay.

after the shock passes by, gran can't help but laugh. ]

G-Geez, you got me good!

[Oooh boy that was much more of a reaction than he was expecting. Kazunari almost feels bad - until Gran laughs. What a good sport.

He drops some of his own bags so he can offer a hand.]

Hehe ~ Sorries. You were just sooo focused; I couldn't help myself. You didn't get hurt too bad, didja?

[ gran takes the hand, grinning. it was spooky month, how could he complain about being scared? it was all part of the fun! ]

No worries, I'm perfectly fine! [ he grins. ] But that was a good one!

[Kazunari hoists Gran up and gives him a once over, too (just in case).]

Gotta get in the spirit y'know ~ [Speaking of... ] Are those Halloween decor beteedubs? Let me help you carry those! I've already tricked you so now it's time for a treat piko ~

Definitely. You can't have Halloween without scares, after all!

But yeah, they are Halloween-- [ he blinks when offered help. well, that's certainly something out of place for him. but really, he can't bring himself to complain. ] Ah, thank you, really, but I really couldn't ask that of you!

You don't hafta ask 'cause I'm offering! It's the least I can do!

[He flexes a nonexistent muscle.] Plus, I may not look it but I'm used to some heavy lifting!

[ gran laughs sheepishly. but gran isn't about to say no to help, no matter how much it was. ]

Thank you, really. I wouldn't have been able to complete this on my own... ah, I haven't caught your name. My name's Gran.

[Ohh, making a nickname out of Gran will be a challenge. But he'll make it happen or his name isn't -]

Kazunari! You can call me Kazu ~ Now letsee, letsee what can I carry for you~

[How about a third option: Morgan's kinesis? Spotting the chase through some miracle of managing to perceive something a sightless cave fish could have managed to seem, Morgan quickly tucks the one he's currently magicking under one arm, then reaches out to grab the other with projected force.]

[ gran skids to a halt when the pumpkin he was chasing was caught by magic, looking around for the source. when he does find it, he laughs. ]

Oh! Thank you for the help! [ he laughs. ] That's the easiest way, huh?

Yep, unless you want to do anything that's not moving anything. [He chuckles, bringing the pumpkin over so Gran can grab it.] But occasionally you can look cool.

I like to move, thank you very much! [ that was almost offensive. but even so, he takes the pumpkin graciously. ] Looking cool is the least of my priorities, I'll be honest.

Trust me, there've been plenty of times I wished I had a different magic. But you gotta make do with what you get, right? [Mostly healing, of course. Not being able to help people like that remains one of his biggest annoyances about this world.]

That is true... [ he still didn't get any closer to figuring out if he wanted to change his own magic or not. ] But really, I should start using my magic. All these pumpkins running around is getting out of control.

Heh, that's putting it mildly. I warned people the pumpkin spice craze was getting out of hand!

... What's pumpkin spice? [ tell him, stranger man! ]

A mix of spices that for some reason, people decided to put in absolutely everything around this time of year.

[Morgan shakes his head, grieving the poor choices of humanity.]

... Sounds kinda nasty. Pumpkin doesn't need to go in everything.

[ he's grieving humanity's choices now as well. ]

It isn't even pumpkin-flavored! It's just spices associated with pumpkin!

[Morgan has strong opinions on this subject.]

[There is something very festive in the air and Venti doesn't know what it is! With all the commotion he's noticed that a certain few of the city's residence keep buying strange costume pieces and decorations and he just... has to know.]

Ya-hoooo! Excuse me!

[There, the person with a crapload of stuff in his arms! Does Venti offer to help carry some of it? No, not at all!]

Might I ask you what you're doing? What are all these curious and cute things for?

[ gran blinks, looking over at the other with a questioning look. who didn't know about halloween?!?!?

it took him a moment to remember that there were different worlds. ]

It's for Halloween! It's a festival of tricks and treats!! You don't hold it where you're from?

[Please enlighten this old man!]

Halloween? Tricks and treats?! [That sounds delightful!] No, I've never heard of such a thing in my world! What sort of tricks and treats are there? Does it have to do with bats? You have bats.

[He points at the Halloween decorations.]

[ a nod. ] I do indeed have bats! But they're decorations, so it's just plastic. It's supposed to invoke a spooky mood!

[ defining halloween, however... that's hard. gran's stuck on how to explain it. ] Halloween means a lot of different things to people, such as some people seeing it as a thinning between the spirit world and the real world, or to little kids, the time to get tons and tons of candy from the adults. If adults don't give the kids treats, it gives them time to trick them-- hence the phrase 'trick or treat!'

[ he's trying. ]

[Oh. It is slightly confusing. But the idea of spirits and spooky things makes him think of the spirits in his own world. Old graveyards ripe with death and lingering souls...!]

Oh! I think I understand! How delightful! And what kind of tricks would be appropriate should someone not receive a treat of candy from someone else?

[... The gears are ticking in his head.]

Making them float every time they sneeze? Making their food taste like salt? Replacing all their shoes with only left sides?

All of them!!

[ it seems that gran is totally here for the kind of prank that venti is pulling. sign him up. ] But here's the catch; in order to go trick or treating, you gotta be dressed up in a costume! The costume has to be spooky too, like a vampire or a ghost!

[Venti seems to brighten like the sun. He claps his hands together.]

What a delightful celebration!! To dress up and play pranks and receive treats!!

[He wants this type of celebration so bad.]

I wonder what I should dress up as. I'll have to think. Maybe something with horns?
