September Catch-All
🧙 WHO: Mary and various
⚔️️ WHAT: Hot Knights, Fizzy Drinks, and A Very Heavy Conversation
đź•’ WHEN: September
🗺️ WHERE: Various
⚠️ WARNINGS: Hot Knights is likely to have some nsfw conversation/atmosphere going on; closed thread with Juzo is going to have massive spoilers for the No Guns Life manga as well as discussions of death, body horror, prison, war, and all that happy sort of stuff
I. Hot Knights
[While Mary's not unfamiliar with the concept of a strip club--she grew up in the slums, after all--she has no idea what to expect inside of one. She's never had much inclination to check them out, busy with her work and the absolute insanity of her life recently. And also just not really wanting to go. If other people are into it that's their business, but it's not really her thing.
However, there's a rescue to be performed, so here Mary is dressed in a black minidress with a jacket covering her shoulders. She even bothered to put on some lipgloss. (She was also going to wear mascara, but she poked herself in the eye with the wand and decided fuck that.) In the name of not breaking her ankles by wearing heels, she's in the same boots as always.
Those who know her will notice that she's also seemingly more... erm, blessed in the chest area than usual.
Right now, she's sitting near the bar stirring some blend of liquor and juice. She turns to whoever is closest by.]
So I hear they just got a whole bunch of new people. Used to be knights, apparently.
[No one ever said she was subtle or good at this undercover thing.]
II. Fizzy Drinks
[In the name of SCIENCE, Mary has decided to check out this bubble bar thing. There's certainly no shortage of options for flavors (scents? she's breathing it in, not drinking it...), and she finds herself almost immediately taken by decision paralysis. Several of them sound good, and having to pick just one feels a bit impossible.]
Hey, which of these would you recommend?
[When in doubt, get opinions from other people!]
III. A Very Heavy Conversation (closed to Juzo)
[Now that Mary's settled into life in Avalon and has been able to get at least a rudimentary setup in the corner of Juzo's office, it's past time for her to get a good look at him. Mostly, she's curious (and concerned) about other changes to his physiology brought about by his arrival here. As hilarious as the confetti cannon in his head is, if they had discovered it while in peril it could have had disastrous results for him. That's not acceptable.
She's already declared her intentions to Juzo before getting everything together, putting on a smock and gathering tools. There's a lot that she's lacking, but she has enough to make due. It's not like she's not used to shortages and having to piece things together on a shoestring.
Once ready, she puts on a pair of gloves with a snap that is probably much more ominous to Juzo than she realizes.]
Ready for ya.
IV. Wildcard!

III. all aboard the pain train
He doesn't fear the examination. For all she jokes about taking him apart to see what makes him tick, he trusts Mary with his life. He fears the things it will reveal, the gleaming silver of his spinal column and the XII etched into its base. He fears being the one to tear that sound of grief and sorrow from her throat, a noise that still echoes in his chamber in the quiet moments he has to contemplate all that he and his family of misfits has been through.
But he can't keep this from her. He kept far too much from her in the past, the truth about Victor and the job, why he came into her life in the first place.
Better to bite the bullet, he knows. But he's not going to like it. ]
You wanna try acting less like a mad scientist when you say that?
[ Still, he plays at normalcy, if only for a little bit. ]
choo choo T_T
[Her response is casual and haphazard as clicks on the floor lamp next to her for better lighting. Mary, of course, has no way of knowing what's going through Juzo's mind. She's keenly aware that he's hiding something from her--he'd given himself away almost immediately upon first meeting her--but that's far from her thoughts at the moment. She's a woman on a mission, first and foremost.]
We'll start with that Devil’s Backbone of yours, since that's another candidate for this place's magical tampering. Hopefully they don't have confetti coming out of your back or anything.
Here, on your stomach.
[She points at the coffee-table-turned-examination-space that she's covered with a towel.]

Juzo heaves a sigh, snubbing out his cigarette before he strips off his shirt and unceremoniously tosses it aside. As he's climbing onto the table, he thinks he should say something, a warning, an apology, anything, but he's always been poor at this kind of thing. ]
Haven't had much of a reason to use it in this place, for what it's worth.
[ There is a very long pause as he lays there. In fact, it's likely she's noticed for herself by the time he finally says, ]
Might be a bit different from what you last remember.
no subject
But she looks at him, really looks at him, and the statement dies on her lips. True to Juzo's suspicions, she realizes right away that what she's looking at is different than what she knows him to have.]
You don't say.
[Her statement is flat, carefully devoid of any affect as she feels her stomach sink for reasons she can't quite identify. She pokes at his back gingerly, as if something could jump out and bite her if she's not too careful. It isn't long before she notices the XII etched into the base of it, which both answers and creates a whole host of questions.]
This isn't yours, Juzo.
[If it sounds like an accusation, that's because it is.]
no subject
It is now.
[ He sighs again, something tense and melancholy in his expression. ]
Cards on the table. The last thing you remember from home isn't the last thing I remember. Guess you could say I'm from your future.
no subject
She sinks onto the couch when he sits up on the table, watching his every movement like a hawk.]
So that's what you were hiding from me when I first got here.
Why didn't you just say so?
[She knows she's not going to like his answer, but it's too late to back out of this conversation now.]

Fizzy Drinks
And if not, Lina's going to have a serious case of the munchies when she walks out of here, and that's not bad either. "Hey, garcon! Over here please, I'm ready to order!" She waves over to the nearest attendant before turning to Mary. "So, am I getting one of those mouthpieces or two?" She asks.
yessss chaos friends
"If we're going to be sharing bubbles and causing trouble together, we should introduce ourselves. I'm Mary."
no subject
Oh this is already going well. "Between you and me, this is probably the nicest dungeon I've ever been in." And she's been in...a surprisingly large number of them. "They're not usually this populated either, you know?" It just makes her wonder if this is all the stuff they show to outsiders, then the really good stuff they keep to themselves must be really, really good. Lina's eager to find out either way.
no subject
The rest of what she has to say, however, throws her for a loop. "Dungeon? You mean this city? It doesn't seem very dungeon-like to me." Compared to what Mary's used to, it's actually really, really nice. "I mean, sure, we're trapped here and all. But aren't dungeons meant to be all dark and dingy?"
fizzy drinks!
I'm not sure... a lot of these sound interesting. [ But while that might not be the answer Mary's looking for, he does, in a way, provide something. ] Maybe we could try surprising each other? I mean, I choose one for you, and you choose one for me, but we don't say what we chose. It could be fun? [ or absolutely awful. who knows. ]
no subject
Tsumugi's suggestion gets a laugh out of her, and she leans in a bit closer to him teasingly.]
Are you sure you trust me enough for that? I'll choose the weirdest flavor and make you try it.
[At least she's honest?]
no subject
I trust you. [ She's his friend, after all! ] But I suppose I should choose something unusual for you, too, then. Just to be safe.
[ ... He says, but he won't go too out there. Just something that she's very unlikely to have tried before. ]
no subject
[She deserves for him to pick gn'ooOOoo, quite frankly.]
Let's see... how tolerant are you of spicy things? I'm eyeing jalapeño for you, but if you're sensitive to it I can pick something else.
[The goal is to troll him, not kill him.]
no subject
On his end, he's got a couple of choices in mind, so to help narrow it down: ] How are you with bitter-tasting things?

So he stands there and when the question comes at him he's also riddled with the same decision paralysis.]
Wha- Wait... What are these? Are you sure it's safe?
[Of course it safe???]
no subject
Said kid is half a foot taller than her, but shhhhh.]Probably not. But I'm going to try it anyway.
[She considers the flavor list again.]
What do you think gn'ooOOoo is?
no subject
I don't think it's best to drink something you're not sure is safe or not?
[What a sheepishly laugh he gives.]
That barely sounds like a... flavour?
no subject
[She doesn't live in a world with superheroes, Izuku. Let her have this.]
Yeah, I'm thinking it's probably better to avoid that one. Maybe... mint? What one are you getting?
[You're doing this with her, right???]
no subject
[Yeah, that's good reasoning.............]
Whu- I- Erm... I guess It might be fun to try flying? Or- Maybe strawberry?
[He has no idea what he's doing.]
Wait- I think I'm okay!

[Tifa is in the same boat, although not quite so paralyzed with her indecision, but more paralyzed by her fear that this is going to be another Celliwig incident. "Incident" because the last time she tried to drink something unfamiliar, it left her confused and disappointed. The fact that so many people around here insist on trying new things when something like drinks really should not be tampered with so much puts her at an unease, and has made her wary of trying said new things. She really should just open a bar so she can make her own drinks, her way.
But whenever someone asks for her recommendation, the barkeep in her feels obligated to give it, so she flashes Mary a crooked smile.]
Would my answer be boring if I said... bubblegum?
[That feels so unadventurous, but the one labeled "gn'ooOOoo" is right next to it, and the boring one feels like the safer one.]
no subject
I don't think it's boring. Bubblegum is a classic.
[It's one of the few luxuries she allows herself back home, in fact! When she can afford it.]
You want to try it together?
no subject
[Bubble gum is a classic, and Tifa is relieved that Mary agrees with her, smiling over the vials. It's something familiar in an otherwise unfamiliar... setting... something she wishes Celliwig would have offered in their bars at the time. Although she's not quite sure how these contraptions work with the mouthpieces, which she picks up from the table and turns over in her hand.]
So how do these work? We just— [She lifts her own replaceable piece over her mouth, but doesn't quite bring it to her lips yet.] Like this?
[It feels a bit restricting and uncomfortable, and makes her nose crinkle. It's not hard to tell that she's a little nervous about what will happen when she inhales it, but...]
no subject
She watches Tifa hold up the mask to her face and nods in response.]
I have to assume so. Like an oxygen mask when you're laid up in a hospital bed.
[The ease with which she makes the comparison might be concerning, but given her profession and the state of the world she comes from... it's just a fact of life, really.]
Except we end up flying at the end, which is the part I'm looking forward to. You ready?
no subject
But the thought is short-lived. The smell of bubblegum fills her head, so much that it's true what it says on the "bottle"—that they'd be able to taste it as well as they could smell it. She'd been expecting a lot worse from this, looking back on her Celliwig experiences, but...]
Huh... [Her surprise is muffled by the mask before she lowers it.] That's not as bad I was expecting it to be.
[Except she isn't feeling the lack of gravity just yet, and isn't sure she wants to, but she takes an extra whiff for good measure.]
You feel any different?
