I guess--imagine if King Arthur had gone mad, and had become convinced that the only way to save humanity was to preserve them in like, permanent suspended animation. But not every person, just... the people that were selected as "pure of heart," or whatever.
So the only way you could get into Camelot was to be selected... and if you didn't pass, then the Knights of the Round Table took care of you.
