As Hythlodaeus's recovery progresses, his mind grows clearer. It's still a slow process, of course, but the treatments at the resort, the peaceful atmosphere and the security his friends' presence brings all work towards restoring not just his body, but his heart as well.

Unfortunately, that also means he is now in a state to notice things around him more. And one of them is the strangely late time that Hades returns to their apartment one night, as though he'd been out almost until dawn. It's quite hard to tell by his appearance, given that Hades looks exhausted at the best of times, but Hythlodaeus has been his friend for eons, and the many little cues are still noticeable to him. Despite his dodging and statements to the contrary, Hades is tired and clearly worried about something.

But the conversations don't lead to anything much, and so the next time Hythlodaeus resigns to try and follow his friend. He stays in bed for long enough that Hades would believe him to be asleep, then quickly gets up and gets dressed, his new familiar keeping watch of the street from the windowsill. Once he's ready, Hythlodaeus slips out of the house - just in time to see Hades turn into a darker alley at the far end of the street.

Heart pounding with worry, he tries to follow - but he's not so good at concealment, not in these circumstances. Though he tries to keep to the shadows and step quietly, an all too-obvious pool of silence and tension follows him. It's only a matter of time before Hades would notice he's being trailed.

That hurts to hear, too, mostly because it's true. Though she gives him a sad smile back, she can't quite argue the point.

"Maybe so. I suppose you have more patience for it than I do... I know I'd be wroth if anyone tried to do that to me again, no matter who it was."

But, small slip aside, he also must feel like he's behind everyone else in a certain way. Mortals are used to living in a mortal world, with the unspoken expectation that people will die, and there will be serious conflict. Someone raised in Amaurot with no other outside experience wouldn't know what to expect. Would be easy to take advantage of. As the instance with the shoebill illustrates...

She leans forward, ducks her head down as if speaking to the water. "You're not a child, though. I don't want him to completely shelter you as a result of this. Gods know he'll be overprotective as all hell when he comes back."

Her ears slant back, allowing his hand to glide over her hair smoothly. After a moment, she admits, "Yes... I would also prefer that. I don't think you'd truly be you anymore if you were weary of the world the way he is."

Hythlodaeus is special in the way Haurchefant was special, in personality alone. In fact, there's some similarities she can draw between them, the constant hammy innuendo from Haurchefant aside.

Irhya doesn't have Haurchefant anymore; he's long past lost to her. But Hythlodaeus is here, hale and whole, and needs a far sight more protecting than a knight would. It's more than just love or attraction, it's...

"I've never met anyone quite like you in my travels, and I probably never will again. So I'd like to leave you as whole as possible when we have to eventually part. And maybe, if I'm being selfish, to say I did something good for you as well while we were here."
