[ yukari freezes when mitsuru pulls her into her arms. not that she's uncomfortable being this close to her--far from it, they've been in an onsen together for god's sake--but. well. she can't remember the last time someone hugged her. especially not one like this that warms her from head to toe and makes her feel..cared for. safe.

she melts into the embrace, tucking her head beneath mitsuru's chin on instinct. ]

Thanks for talking with me, [ she murmurs into her collar. ] And for being patient.

Of course.

[ Mitsuru says quietly, her smile carrying through into her voice. ]

You did the same for me.

Well, yeah. That's kinda what friends do. [ the sarcasm doesn't quite translate when muffled through the fabric of whatever mitsuru is wearing at the moment. ] I couldn't stand seeing you tear yourself down when you weren't to blame for anything.

It's just.... [ yukari falters, the words she wants to say catching in her throat. 'no one does this for me. i don't want anyone to do this for me. i've wanted someone to do this for me for a long time.' ] This means a lot, I guess.

[ Mitsuru understands.

[ When her father died, all that she could feel was the profound emptiness of his absence ... and the equal profound sense of failure from being unable to protect him. Heartache and apathy blurred the days that followed that loss together, and drained the warmth from the world around her. She drew into herself, isolated by her grief, and would have stayed there if Yukari hadn't broken her free of it.

[ She counted that conversation by the riverside as one of the most cherished moments of her life.

[ She had no intention of allowing Yukari to suffer if it was within her power to do something about it, and if it wasn't ...

[ Then Yukari wouldn't suffer alone. ]

I know.

[ yukari thinks of another conversations she holds dear to her heart, one held in her room in the weeks before the battle with nyx avatar. with the full knowledge the world as they knew could collapse, and told one another they would see it through to the end. and they'd do so together. neither of them would see it all crashing down alone.

nor do they have to be again.

the words of nyx avatar echo in her head, unbidden. 'there is both joy and wonder in coming to understand another...'

a loud crack from the surrounding woods reminds her that they're in the middle of vaguely familiar territory with who knows what kind of animals lurking around in the dark. maybe now isn't the best time for...whatever this is.

yukari pulls back, scooting away from mitsuru to put some space between them. ]

Sorry. [ she turns her flushed face away from her friend and tucks a piece of hair behind her ear. ] I mean, thanks. No, I mean...ugh. You already know.

[ again, her words lack their usual bite. god, this is embarrassing. ]

[ The sudden, intrusive reminder of the world around them brings with it an awareness of just how close they are and a certain ... self-consciousness isn't the correct word, but it's something in that general direction. ]

It's alright, Yukari.

[ Mitsuru chuckles softly, glancing downward as she feels a bit of color creeping into her own cheeks. ]

Oh. Well, okay.

[ yukari, use words. please, for the love of god, open your mouth and say--something. anything better than that. face burning, she looks down at their still joined hands. she should let go so they can start the arduous task of putting this behind them. she really should.

instead, she holds on tight and smiles, ever so slightly. ]

We should...call it a night soon, right? Unless there's some other big secrets left to share.

[kirijo]

[ She lets out another small laugh. ]

I believe we've cleared the air for now.

[ And yet, despite Mitsuru having said everything that was on her mind, it doesn't feel clear. It feels as though there's still something hanging in the air between them. She doesn't know what, but ... she can feel her cheeks growing warmer. ]
