[She doesn't like this kind of silence much either, and she moves back towards the thicker trees to see if she can spot anything, all while keeping her footsteps and breathing to a minimum. It's eerie. Had the birds been chirping before and she just hadn't noticed, or were they always this silent? She's having a hard time remembering what it was like before Eustace pointed it out.
But the silence doesn't last long at all. There's the familiar scraping againβthe sound of vines crawling against the wood and grass, dragging dirt along with them, but it's different. Not quite the same as the ones they experienced earlier. These ones sound louder... Thicker.
And then, just as she takes another step forward, something emerges from the dirt. It's large, and covered in grass and vines that would put the other ones to shame. And then, the forest goes silent again... Whatever it is, it remains still, except for the vines jutting out of it that writhe and wriggle around, like they're sniffing them out.]
