Did the jar fall down from somewhere? Why in the world did the old man have a trapped ghost in in his house?! But then he realises that there's nowhere the jar could reasonably have fallen down from... which means that someone must have thrown it through the window.
To look out he'd have to walk through the ghostly woman, and he's not doing that. He's honestly really scared and struggling to keep it together... her wails are sending chills down his spine and giving him the most ominous feeling of dread. Still, he's a death mage! He has to keep it together! This spectre is visibly distressed, and while she may be dangerous he shouldn't immediately go all-out. Nevertheless he lights a cigarette to get an exorcism glyth ready (not realising that this is a banshee and those can't move on to the afterlife). His hands shake terribly, so he has to flick his fingers several time before managing to produce a small flame and light up.]
