There's no harm in a careful approach. Ultimately, it's up to him if he divulges more or not.

We'll be non-specific, but an item given out with specific intention still harbors the original feelings and memories of that individual. Were the association negative, I could see it being discarded immediately... however, if it's a positive symbol, housing a comforting memory or emotion that outweighs anything that occurs after, discarding it becomes complicated.

It doesn't even need to be so complicated. Putting emotional value on material objects is nothing new. And when it's from a person you may never see again?

I... I can see it being something like that. He did mention that what he did when he got the collar was something he did willingly when he was looking for someone important to him.

Maybe it's not as detrimental as I think it is. I just... I hope he'll be okay. With or without it.
