[Gokudera could yell, and that could make flames appear. He is a stereotypical shounen JUMP character, but… more the tragic sort of backstory silver/white-haired bishounen that is really a side-character. Gokudera isn’t going to go full yelling protagonist on a stick.
He needs more will, and probably pressure, or the weight of being a crushing disappointment. That’s what he’s usually under before he develops new techniques or advances in whatever he tries.

If he lights the stick to create heat to help himself as an act of desperation, maybe that will be the right sort of pressure to put on himself.]
